I hate those nicknames and names that strive too hard to be "cute." Communist Mainland Chinese like to call their children "ming ming," "lang lang," "tong tong," Pass the sick bag. This is not a Chinese tradition at all. In fact, it is despised, especially as a formal name. We call it "currying favor where none is deserved."
