Brent was a beautiful spirit. This is a haunting interview and the guy interviewing him laughs after he tells his resolution. This is so sad. Rest in loving peace Brent. You were beautiful.
Ahh Brent, you were there during my first experience with the Dead all those years ago. I hope you made it right and got the best of your demons because I hope to see you in Heaven one day.
Whoever said the interviewer should be "ashamed" you should watch again. Dude was just talking kind to Brent. Brent started speakin trueth. Wasnt on dude. Get real, yall.
All I know is that after he joined I really kinda lost interest in going to their concerts..His voice is soooo annoying and he tries to play above everyone..He sings like he's got razor blades in his throat..I like to listen to any live Dead concerts before 1978-79..I'm just saying...
My God, that's sad. Brent always seemed so unhappy, so disconnected, and I don't think there was a real warm, welcoming culture inside the Dead camp, much as I love 'em.
My opinion is that Brent was smoking Cocaine prior to this interview. I make that opinion because of his eyes (wide the fuck open) and his halting way of talking. It is hard to speak after smoking Cocaine, your mouth just does not move the way it is suppossed to. He is in a bad place for sure. MY opinion is that it is Freebase.
This behavior is not the work of Heroin. Defintley some kind of speed.
Brent , it was an honor and a privelege to have experienced your talent and spirit live . 21 years later ... I'm still grateful to you brother , what a blessing you were , still are , and will always be ... a special expression of and from the universe "directly to the heart " - Peace
The interviewer was just responding back to the way Brent was joking around when he says 'at least half way through new year's day' You can tell the way he says it and his nonverbal. Brent was just being funny. It's not like the interviewer knew anything about his drug use really or that he would die because of drugs. It's not like the Dead talked about drugs like they were a serious problem to them.
1:11....pain.... im an addict brent and when i die and go to hell the first thing im gunna do is u, me, pig and keith r gunna do a show at the most swingin bar in hell. first rounds on me
@charfman84 Yeah he actually lived until 1990, but he never slowed down with the drugs to my knowledge, hence his death at age 36 or something like that. It was amazing he lived that long.
Man that makes me sad. I went down the dope road and know EXACTLY what he's talking about. You want to quit real bad until the withdrawls start.. You're utterly powerless and almost come to accept death at a certain point. Thank God for me, I "got it" after 3 rehabs and a ruined life and have now been clean and much happier for almost 2 years. The heroin life sucks. I hated not being able to function without a drug every day. Brent was the Dead's best keys player and could soar with Jerr.
Good golly, Miss Molly !!! I just loved Brent. Saw his last show and couldn't really swallow the GD's sound after he passed. I miss you, Mr. Mydland and thank you for the eternal B3 that you left for us all.
Brent was always my favorite to watch at showtime. I met him in a bar in Telluride with Bill K and he was pretty hammered. I had no idea then he was in that deep. Really really sad to see such talent lost so early.
@BringerOfLight2012 - I totally agree with you that he was on coke when this was filmed, but I also think he appears like he's tripping. Speaking from personal experience! I don't mean to be a wise ass or anything, just wanna augment what you're saying.
So young. So much talent. And a huge complex from the fervent fandom of GD fans and his own shitty self image. I never comment, but that was so sad :(
He definatley knows he is in deep, and yes whoever the interviewer is should be ashamed, I love Brents songs, his life wouldnt catch up for another 8 years
@rwk1983 He fucking laughed in his face when he said, "it'll last maybe half a day of the new year". Thats fucking sick. This man was obviously in a very bad way.
@tdunski Yeah man that interviewer is a genuine twat. Who the fuck would laugh like that when someone who is obviously in very deep makes a statement like that.
@tdunski Brent is my favorite keys man, Keith copied many of Garcia's guitar licks later on in his time with the band so that is why I am a huge fan of 80's dead. I really like 1980-1985, especially 8/10/82, 10/9/82, 10/10/82, 10/31/83, 5/13/83, 11/1/85, 12/31/84, 12/26/80, 4/17/84, 7/13/84, 7/14/84, 7/15/84, 8/28/82, 9/15/82, 7/27/82, 7/28/82, 12/14/80, 11/29/80, 6/30/85, 6/15/85, and many many more. I am just throwing out some suggestions for those that love Brent's playing ability.
Bums me out whenever I see this clip. I always get the feeling Brent is being so honest, and then kind of recoils after the interviewer starts to laugh.
you can hear him say it is his fourth new year and the asshole interviewer says, "so you've learned all the songs by now" He had a complex and he was high but he was a great component of 80s GD. Cheers!
How can you people say Brent didn't abuse drugs? He is CLEARLY high here (come on you don't need to be a genius to see that) and also the man died from a speedball. So I don't understand the misinformation about Brent was "only an alcoholic". There is no way. I am a huge Brent fan so if anyone knows the real story please let me know.
Ya'all are like a bunch of little old ladies spinning the rumor mill. What he did in private was his business. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. He was a beautiful cat and deserves better than this.

how about dont worry what it takes. drugs drugs drugs. why talk about them? let them do their thing and brent do his. he was a great one, to be missed alot.
crazy eyes!..Brent was the best out of 3 keyboard players the Dead had..Pig, Keith, and Brent..we used to call it the Dead's keyboard curse..till Jerry died...We all miss the magic ; (
Not to take anything away from the other guys, but I know I wouldn't have followed the band around if Brent hadn't joined. I met him once on 3/30/86 in a corridor at the Biltmore and told him I really enjoyed his music. He was genuinely pleased that I complimented him. I felt after words that I should have said that I loved his songs and recognized his incredible talent. I thought he got that all the time I was trying to play it cool. When he died, I really regretted not telling him in that way
@killdaclownz yeah. Brent was coming out of a room Bob was in. The end one on the right. We hung out with people in the room next to that one on the right as well. I remember Robbie Taylor came into that room after that show and a girl was playing with a plastic snake that moved around and he told her to stop that while he told us that Bob was staying next door. Someone gave Bob a tie dye and asked him to wear it the following night. A guy across the hall was mad people knocked on his door
I wish he could have at least took it easy on drugs. Poor bastard. Beautiful kids, incredible talent, endless opportunity, and drugs won. Damn Shame. Wish I coulda given him some Suboxone. But NOOOOOOO.. Weren't around then!! Damn Heroin!
Brent wasn't a junkie, he just did heroin once in a while. In fact he probably died because he hadn't done it for awhile and had no tolerance. His big problem was alcohol which he alludes to at the end of this.
It was a Jerry interview I saw on the web somewhere, and also I think the Dennis McNally book. Brent was mainly a drinker, a very heavy binge drinker. He had a couple DUI's and was about to go to jail for a few weeks right before he died. Also he was going through a divorce. Heavy drinkers almost by definition are not junkies -- the combination does not work -- you drink too much and shoot up and you'll just get sick and die. Most junkies prefer soft drinks to alcohol, in my experience.
Thanks for the info. I thought Brent would like an drink sometimes and that his choice was the other. I Fell bad as I consider myself a huge fan of Brent's. I saw that he needed a lot of oral care from this video and related it to snorting. Thank you for the reply. I stand corrected.
Sure. You know, I was reading rock critic Robert Christgau who made the interesting point that Brent was sort of channelling the spirit of Pigpen, especially live on songs like Never Trust a Woman and the ending of Blow Away. I hadn't really thought of that before, but it makes sense. The way he would stretch things out and just rave on and on with some rap -- that sort of thing was pioneered by Pigpen in Lovelight and elsewhere, and Brent would kind of do the same thing (and do it well).
