I think this song is about needing to fulfill unwanted commitments. Ira's girlfriend Georgia Hubley has some type of family or academic function that Ira has to attend. He doesn't want to go but does. Typical situation but fantastic rendering and storytelling here. Band for the ages. Saw them twice live and among the best concerts of my life. Love you guys!!

I don't really see this as a love song...The guy hears the knock on the door from a woman who he once loved and hasn't seen in years, now that the moment's here, thinks that it would be better to avoid the whole affair and to "slip away" (wouldn't that be better?).
