It's amazing to me just how little talent is acceptable to so many people. I understand that with art the "excellence" is in the eye/ear of the beholder, but come on. This guy is a rank amateur--the kind of thing you see/hear at open mic nights in some crappy bar. Don't you people have standards? You throw around terms like "genius." It's a joke. Genius? This guy isn't even passable, let alone genius. I know little kids just beginning to play and sing who are better than this dweeb.

Yes, coolpirateclub. I should have been more specific. As a musician, I tend not to hone in on lyrical value if the music doesn't do anything for me. But after the tune grabs me I do usually begin to appreciate the words. I'm not going to say out of hand that he doesn't write good lyrics. That wouldn't be fair.

Don't get me wrong. Just because I can't appreciate a song simply for lyrical value doesn't mean no one else should. I just can't listen to a song that doesn't have much tune value and say to myself, "well, the lyrics are good." That's probably why rap and hip hop don't do it for me--they're all words and rhythm. The only melody involved is usually sampled from someone else's hard work hahaha. Seriously, though, I don't want to put this guy down anymore, if folks like him they like him.

At times he can be funny, at times mournful, and he is certainly a brilliant critic of politcs and society. His lyrics in his solo stuff are a little more straightforward than those in million dead, but no less excellent. Music taste may be subjective, but to judge someone's talent isn't - talent is a fact, you couldn't for example see a world class concert pianist and judge them as lacking talent.

rickcee: have you actually listened to anything else by Frank Turner? He is far from lacking in talent. Whilst his guitar parts in this song are simple, in other songs they're actually quite complex compared to your average folk musician. I think his lyrics are brilliant, not as typically poetic as someone like Jeremy Enigk, but in their own way very charming.
