"Most of Bach's concertos for violin and harpsichord were transcribed from Vivaldi"? No no no. Bach transcribed ten works from the L'Estro Armonico. Almost all of those ten were for organ solo and for harpsichord solo. L'Estro Armonico Concerto no. 10 for 4 violins in B minor is one that Bach transcribed as a concerto for 4 harpsichords in A minor, and that is about the only one you can say is for violin and harpsichord. As for Bach's violin concertos, they were not from the L'Estro Armonico.
If by inspired you mean Bach took some of Vivaldi's works and arranged them, either all or parts to become The Brandenburg Concertos then you're dead wrong. Most certainly Bach loved and studied Vivaldi's (as well as other Italian composers) music and the only insparation he got for the Brandenburgs from them was the Concerto Grosso format, the fast, slow, fast style and the Fortspinnung type that was typical of Vivaldi's music. But The Brandenburgs are in no way a take on Vivaldi's music.
i did never mean that. Bach is very original, but indeed he was inspirated by vivaldi in the Brandenburgs concerts. Sorry if my comment offend you but that the fast and furious music is typical of vivaldi it is no reason to think it is the unique style he has. Neither i said that vivaldi was his most influential composer because that is Händel, because you can notice some french orchestation on Bach's music took from Händel that He took from Purcell and that purcell took from Lully.
O.K. now. I was NOT offended, I love Vivaldi(Though I don't deny that Bach is the greatest ever!). But please tell me exactly how you think that the Brandenburgs were inspired by Vivaldi. Do they (or one particular concerto) sound like Vivaldi's music, or are we talking style? You say, "The fast and furious music is typical of vivaldi it is no reason to think it is the unique style he has" - I don't, because other composers were playing just like that WAY before Vivaldi!! to be continued...
continued.... Now, I actually do believe that Vivaldi WAS Bach's most influential composer (not Handel) seeing as though Bach transcribed more music of his that of any other person. But you say Bach took his French style from Handel? In his youth Bach heard some musicians of the Duke of Celle, most of whom were Frenchmen (and he loved them), also he studied ACTUALL French composers since the French overture was ultra popular in Germany at the time. Bach did want to meet Handel, though.
This aria was taken from Vivaldi opera "Motezuma". The lyrics are: Dovè la figlia?/Dovè il mio trono?/Non son più padre, più re non sono/La sorte barbara non ha più affanno/non ha più fuime Ciel tiranno/ch'esser terribile possa per me/Vede l'istesso nemico fato/ che non più farmi può sventurato/che, se m'uccide, crudel non è.
Can anyone tell me why the violinists do not use shoulderrests? I understand wanting to be authentic and wanting to play the violin the way it was played in the past, but does it actually serve a purpose?
It could be due to personal choice. Also, if you're going to playing more on the tailpiece like many of the violinists due, then it's recommended you disdain from shoulder rests.
Can anybody point me in the direction of the score of this aria? I've searched everywhere; internet, public libraries, library of the conservatory, librarby of the Dutch Opera (De Nederlandse Opera)... Thanks in advance !!

ch'esser terribile possa per me.
Vede l'istesso nemico fato,
che non più farmi può sventurato,
che, se m'uccide, crudel non è.

letra en ESPAÑOL
¿Dónde está mi hija? ¿Dónde está mi trono?
Ya no soy padre, ya no soy rey.
El brutal destino no tiene más tormentos,
el cielo tirano no tiene más truenos
que me hagan temer.
El destino enemigo sabe bien que
no me puede hacer más daño y,
si me quita la vida, no sería tan cruel.

But The Brandenburgs are in no way a take on Vivaldi's music.
mikitavi 3 years ago
i did never mean that.

You say, "The fast and furious music is typical of vivaldi it is no reason to think it is the unique style he has" - I don't, because other composers were playing just like that WAY before Vivaldi!! to be continued...
mikitavi 3 years ago
continued....

The english translation goes:
Where is my daughter? Where is my throne?
I am no longer a father, no longer a king.
Brutal fate holdes no more torments,
tyrannous havens holds no more thunderbolts
for me to fear.
Even inimical fate sees
that it cannot render more miserable,
and if it kills me, it's not cruel.

This aria was taken from Vivaldi opera "Motezuma". The lyrics are: Dovè la figlia?/Dovè il mio trono?/Non son più padre, più re non sono/La sorte barbara non ha più affanno/non ha più fuime Ciel tiranno/ch'esser terribile possa per me/Vede l'istesso nemico fato/ che non più farmi può sventurato/che, se m'uccide, crudel non è.

Actually, this aria is from Bajazet. Vivaldi wrote an earlier version of this aria for Motezuma, but it's a bit different.
DannyDaWriter 4 years ago
Danny, Bajazet was first presented at Verona in 1735, as Motezuma had its premiere at Venice, on Teatro Sant'Angelo, on 14 november 1733.

I know. The Motezuma version is earlier - the two are just different slightly.

you're right, the montezuma aria was for a cstrato, right?

Can anyone tell me why the violinists do not use shoulderrests? I understand wanting to be authentic and wanting to play the violin the way it was played in the past, but does it actually serve a purpose?
firebreathone 4 years ago
It could be due to personal choice. Also, if you're going to playing more on the tailpiece like many of the violinists due, then it's recommended you disdain from shoulder rests.
DannyDaWriter 4 years ago
Best? Best. Best!!!
The Europa Galante recording of Bajazet = best!!!

Yup. I play in HIP (historically-informed performance) myself, akin to Europa Galante - including the quite extreme style of performance. =D
