  • I actually like this better than the cd. More emotion here!

  • @EZYCHEESY They applaud because she had just quick-changed before that line, and on Lauren Bacall me, they revealed her wearing an elegant new gown

  • @hillevifan - She "revealed" the gown well before she sang the Lauren Bacall line. Just watch a video of the performance and you can see she finished the change right before "All my descamisados..". The reason for the applause is because of the fierce and energetic delivery of the line and the raw physical energy she extruded.

  • @EvanOz85 That's correct. She progressively slips on her outfit during the male chorus sections and is done by that point. I think hillevifan got the quick change-into-glam-outfit idea from that Seth Rudetsky concert a while back, where he has an actress demonstrate a quick change from some frumpy thing to a sequined, red gown and wig while singing either "Buenos Aires" or "Rainbow High." Can't remember. Anyway, first time hearing this opening night audio. Nobody does it better than Patti.

  • @LenaDelovely I think so. I did not record it though, so I can't tell for sure ;)

  • @EZYCHEESY - They applauded because of the fierceness of the performance and the bite in her voice - just listen, it's thrilling!

  • i saw it in previews and thought it was really mandy patinkin's show, but friends went back a few months later and said how much she had grown into the character. wish i had seen her again. learned my lesson though, i don't miss her when she's in ny.

  • @EZYCHEESY if im not mistaken Lauren Bacall was a famous actress during the time and she was know for over the top fashion she was grand

  • @EZYCHEESY No, I don't ... I wasn't even born when this was performed.

  • @AutumnToSpring Because Lauren Bacall was in the audience.

  • @EZYCHEESY yes, I know. Patti really captured Eva's dark charisma. I've studied the real Eva Peron, so I know this.

  • I love Patti, don't get me wrong, but she doesn't sound as good here as she does on the CD.

  • @GoddessofCoruscant I agree. But I also have to say, this is a very old recording, so the quality is bad, and it was the opening night! Her voice developed during the run. :)

  • @AutumnToSpring I think she sounds wonderful, and the applause from the audience makes the recording priceless--such a fantastic bitch had never been seen on a Bway stage before !

  • @GoddessofCoruscant I disagree. She recorded the album while doing the LA out of town tryout and you can hear the strain on her voice. This recording was a good 2-3 months after LA, so Patti was already growing vocally into the role and she didn't have the added tension of recording the album at the same time. I think that this is actually the best she's ever sounded on the song.

  • @GoddessofCoruscant I would agree with you; her voice really grew into this role. She even said so in her book that she had trouble singing this poorly written score. Andrew Lloyd Webber doesn't know how to write for human voice.

  • @GoddessofCoruscant Ummm, The recording would have been edited so there were no mess ups or false notes. It's really hard to perform on stage...

  • @GoddessofCoruscant Yes, in her Memoirs book, she states that she had the flu on the opening night performance. In fact, she said she threw up during intermission! Right before she sang "Argentina"! That's why she's not up to par in this performance!

  • Eva showing her true colors...

  • oh my god, was Lauren Bacall in the audience?! Haha!

  • I LOVE YOU PATTI
