I could watch this entire movie over and over again for months if I wanted to, I love this movie and this scene is unspeakably beautiful. Every time I watch this I find myself in tears that I can't make stop. I can't help but feel deeply sad at the history that happened after this. Tis pretty sad that this speech, a speech that was made 48 years before the year I was born has moved me more than anything I've ever heard. None of the speeches of my time have compared to something so meaningful towards the good of man as this masterpiece. It pains me, and makes me worried about my/our sons and daughters. oh wow, I never noticed that. I'm youtube-honored! Just for the sake of information...my grandma is german, but she -somehow, she has never explained exactly how- fled to Iceland. So that's her origins. Her home was bombed into dust, she lost everything, but remains a very stubborn and strong woman, the kind few men dare argue against.

@eaglenest1972 in answer to your question. The reason that war was declared on Nazi Germany but not on Soviet Russia in 1939 was not solely because of the invasion of Poland. In Mein Kampf, Hitler had stated his intention to attack France as early as the 1920's.
Secondly, it would have been suicide to take on Germany and Russia together. As soon as WWII was over the Cold War began so it's not like Russia was ignored completely.

There was actually an allied plan to attack the USSR during the war. They were also hoping to send troops to Finland...events changed that though. Expecting a reliable comedy, I sobbed uncontrollably during this stunning speech, which is not typical for me. I was so moved by Chaplin's depth and clarity that I felt a profound grief and melancholy with the awareness that his genius has fallen on so many deaf ears and ignorant minds.

@eaglenest1972 in answer to your question. The reason that war was declared on Nazi Germany but not on Soviet Russia in 1939 was not solely because of the invasion of Poland. In Mein Kampf, Hitler had stated his intention to attack France as early as the 1920's.
Secondly, it would have been suicide to take on Germany and Russia together. As soon as WWII was over the Cold War began so it's not like Russia was ignored completely.

There was actually an allied plan to attack the USSR during the war. They were also hoping to send troops to Finland...events changed that though. Of course, the third reich was the main enemy and the largest source of instability in Europe, and the allies couldn't deal with both the USSR and the Reich at the same time.

The reason they declared war on Germany and not the USSR was because France shared a border with Germany and they thought they could beat Germany, the USSR was in another league.
