my favorite movie of all time. cant find it and tv wont show it..something about music being illegal..wish they would put this film out and let everyone see it.. its from the book and i was at the college at that time so its pretty factual..
i have seen this movie in the former GDR. was about 16 and it changed my outlook completely. did not belief anymore, what they were telling us at school. formed my political view forever.
Saw this in college in Seattle in my junior year at UW. Kim Darby failed to strike a chord with the audience. We mostly laughed at this. I think it went over better in less urban areas where authenticity was not an issue.
This movie has been shown only 3 times in greece because in 70s we had dictatorism and this movie was too revolutionary for them(Papadopoulos,Makarezos).
@TheLordofcod re: "shown only 3 times in greece because in 70s we had dictatorism"
... yet now in these very comments people are saying that it shouldn't be watched in America because its message doesn't fit the direction America is heading. Which sadly says a lot more about America than they presumably intend.
We in the US have no need for dictators, censors, or propagandists... as a democracy (an idea from the Greeks, ironically) we already have citizens who do all of their work for them.
I think I was 12 when I saw this movie and loved the story and the music. 6 years this almost became my story when I and my girlfriend took part in a student strike which went wrong and were beaten by the police. I still have the LP, still love it and would love my kids and wife to see the movie(found it on ebay by it was in NTSC standard...). Thank you for the clip.
A tribute to the most self indulgent, narcissistic, and destructive generation in American history, this film is ridiculously presumptuous. The real heroes of the late 60s, early 70s were the young men who fought and bled in Vietnam, not the pampered Ivy League college students who condemned those soldiers. No doubt Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia is much better off thanks to the efforts of students like these...well, except for the millions of innocents murdered by the communists after 1975.
@tolivr Heroes? The only people I've heard talk about "the real heroes" are armchair-patriots who never risk anything or politicians rattling the war drums. My father died in Vietnam, the 8th of 9 generations of my family who have fought this country's wars. Those who survived those wars taught me to always have the courage to stand against injustice.
People who say "my country, right or wrong" too often forget the rest of that quote: "if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."
@mickycisme My father fought in Vietnam from January, 1969 to November, 1969 flying over 120 combat missions. And yes, the real heroes are those who fought, like your dad, not the pampered, selfish, pretentious idiots who practically destroyed Columbia University in 1968. I invite you to review exactly what effect their protests had on the University and how many years it took the college to recover. Some of the protesters later helped form the Weathermen, a terrorist organization.
does anybody know where I can find this movie with greek subtitles?especially through the web..I've been trying to download it from a site I usually download movies from but I couldn't have this one.:@ any solution?
My sister's boyfriend had the album... a compliation... Back then I remember liking the variations on what I guess was original music for the film. - I just looked it up online - they're all called "Theme from the Strawberry Statement", and went by the names of Cyclatron, Market Basket, Coit Tower and Pocket Band. If anybody has Mp3s of these I'd be good to hear them again.
Turner Classic Movies spooled this Jan. 14,2010 3:30AM(EST). It hasn't aged well, but it definitely is a product of the times. How corporate Hollywood saw the turmoil of 1968 and tried to turn it into a profit. Interesting soundtrack that features Buffy Saint-Marie performing a popped-up version of Joni Mitchell's "Circle Game".The soundtrack also features Thunderclap Newman Crosby,Stills,Nash(and CSN and Neil Young)as well as Young as a solo performer;no unique tracks from these artists.
The movie is probably great, no doubt about it but what a terrible trailer! Show the whole movie in the trailer, why don't you?! Thank god they make movie trailers better nowadays. LOL.
you guys know that this was the first west movie that shown in the east of the DDR? that time must be great, my father sometimes tell me from this where they was in the cinema to see a american production with the call of real freedom.
Another great movie that seems to be lost. There were a few years in the late 60's and 70's that Hollywood really made some daring and provocative movies. Now I can't find this quirky and joyous film anywhere. Instead, we get shit like "High School Musical 3--The EXTENDED Edition" plastered on almost every shelf in every store you go to.
Ha! - A really good example, as far as context /counter-context goes, (there's some other popular movie series... about competing teams of cheerleaders that also fits the bill). Between then & now... seems almost as far as East from the West.
Examples of how Hollywood & capitalism have channeled young people's interests into obsessions with popularity & ego. The times they are a-fading.
I never saw the movie either but I loved the sound track . That was also the first time I ever heard Crosby Stills and Nash and Niel Young. I would love to have the sound track again but never was able to find it.
This film was supposed to depict my generation. It missed by a mile. We all laughed our asses off watching it -- and we were all heavily involved in the anti-war movement. Cannes Film Festival award?? Must have been a slow year for cinema.
In 1971 in Uruguay we could not believe that what the movie showed was actually happening in the USA. The film was a great success here and our reality was very close to what we saw in the picture. Anyway, give peace a chance
The movie has far more impact than the book--like most leftist tomes the book was a self-indulgent flash in the pan. The movie is seldom seen and is visible online at google. Not available on netflix.
This is one of the least publicly viewed of the cult classic antiwar films of the 1970's. This was coming out about the same time as Nixon was invading Cambodia and the four students were killed by the National guard at kent State in Ohio. The near psychedelic quality of the last fifteen minutes of the film have always stuck with me--the 'give peace a chance' scene ranks as one of the great ones in cinema for its depiction of the random police violence of the times.
I saw this movie while visiting Caracas, Venezuela in 1970 at the height of my rebellious student times and in love with a beautiful Venezuelan. I didn't ever forget it and am glad to see this trailer in YouTube. Yeah, "call out the instigator because there's something in the air. We've got to get together sooner or later because the revolutions here! Yeah! Sooo good timesthey were indeed.
Being much older now I saw it last year again after 23 odd years. Although I cannot identify with the kids anymore, the film still works well and the reason is - a great cinematography. (Was shocked to recognise Bruce Davison, now more mature and all, as the baddie in the Kingdom Hospital.)
this film was kindof rediculous, the way it was shot, the content interesting but i think the piont it was trying to make was undermined by the way it was shot
guyz... i thought i never see these pics again... i was livin in the former east block, and however we got this movie... i liked a lot that time and now again.... this movie says something... says you've got to fight in your whole life...
it can't be comparable with any modern movie.... maybe i have prejudice... this is a great movie...
The film says that Simon's idea of life (and political commitment) is filtered through the lens of youthful voyeurism/narcissism, until someone literally smashes up his 'movie' and lets another part of reality in. Bertolucci's "The Dreamers", thirty years later, used more or less the same dramatic device to explain the same coming-of-age process.
It is a Sixties (NOT seventies) Movie shot in 1969 - the whole story is also related to things from the end of the sixties (almost every second line of the screenplay). This movie is not just a piece of history, it is also well down with great emotions. It is one of the movies that you do not forget after seeing it.
This is so like the sixties were NOT--when you really know how something was & happened, and then you see the Hollywood version, you know how deep in a bubble those guys out there in Hollywoodville are. It's sad to see people so completely out of touch with anything they try to put their hands on. It's sadder that people might actually believe that this is what the sixties was like.
