  • Its rare you see someone doing good form on these, nice job :-)

  • Impossible for me to do it like this guy is doing. Im taller and hip doesnt bend as much as his. With straight back, bending from hip, knee i would end up pulling the bar to my chest because my knees are pointing out so much :D Im stretching almost everyday to get more flexibility exrx.net/WeightExercises/BackGeneral/BBBentOverRow.html here are some facts about rowing

  • chupame huevos

  • You're strong as hell. I tried Pendlay rows for the first time today. Only 135x5

  • It looks pretty hard, especially with that amount of weight. Very good form

  • 4 manlets watched this video.

  • Pretty nice, but isn't your torso supposed to stay fixed in the same place throughout the rep? Seeing quite a bit of vertical movement here.

  • So I'm still learning, but would you consider the position of the pendlay row the same as the starting position of the typical deadlift stance that Rippetoe might teach? I'm learning his stuff and i want to incorporate this row into my workout.

  • @holisticdan

no, the position of the pendlay row is the same as the starting position of the romanian deadlift with your hips really high, but thats no reason to NOT incorporate it into your workout ;-)

  • I dont know who named this the Pendlay row, but people have been doing that style of row waaaaaaaaaaaaay before Pendlay came around. Don't get me wrong, Pendlay is cool and all, just never understood why they were called Pendlay rows.

  • awesome form. i have short legs long torso so its tough for me

  • no bicept braaah

  • best pendlay row form i've seen , respect

  • perfect form! impressing.

  • That looks good man

  • so which one is better, Barbell row or pendlay?

  • @gangkapak That's like asking which is better... chicken or steak? The answer is yes! They are simply different movements. One is not necessarily better than the other. Or, at least, you are likely to get different answers from different people. Each movement results in slightly different recruitment of the muscles in your back. So the best answer is... it depends.

  • @VikingMan44

    Exactly!!

  • @VikingMan44 Pretty sure 'pendlay row' is a FORM of barbell row too.

  • What's the difference between this and bent over barbell row?

    Also, very impressive (Y)

  • @LISdafreestyler A traditional barbell row is not as strict a movement. The torso is usually slightly more upright than a Pendlay Row and some hip movement is expected. The result is one can usually use more weight with a barbell row. Different muscle recruitment also.

  • @VikingMan44 Ahh I see. Thanks.

  • @LISdafreestyler The pendlay row is a bent-over barbell row. As far as I can tell it means doing them with an overhand (prone) grip and setting the bar down between reps.

  • Not bad, but you should be bringing the bar up to your neck, with your wrists pointing completely horizontally

Btw, you should be exhaling like a freight train at the end of every rep, as well as letting out a minimal amount of flatulence to maximize muscle tearing

  • @thegreekmatt Lol, good one...

  • @thegreekmatt ahahahaha yes little flatulence won't hurt

  • very good form.

  • I thought these were supposed to be pulled up close to the legs

  • @MrGrevy

    Nope. To the chest.

  • wow i'm impressed.

takes a lot of strength and concentration to pull that off.

and your body swing is minimal.

  • i feel a very strong pressure on my knees when trying to get into that form, is there anything i can do to avoid that?

  • Good job.

  • best form on youtube

  • fur woden nigga

  • How do you maintain your balance? I push my glutes as far back as I can to bring the chest as close to the middle of my feet as possible so that I can maintain balance and not have the weight pull me forward!

  • Viking that's very good form.. looking down in a few reps? no biggie

  • do you use thumbless grip?

  • do you use thumbless grip?

  • Though I like weighted pull/chin-ups more, I've been working on these bent-over rows lately.

    Nice lifting, by the way.

  • One of the few pend. rows I've seen on here with good form. Take note : no hip or knee movement, all back. I likey.

  • Animel !!!

  • Grip: Overhand. Under VS Over simply results in different muscle recruitment in your arms and back.

Grip width: Go with whatever feels best. Shoulder(ish) grip width is what I use. To wide a grip always made my shoulders feel shitty though.

  • What's your grip here?

  • What is the ideal hand width and stance width for this or is it optional?

  • which way are ur palms facing on this lift?

mine are facing up. what's the difference between the two?

  • Great lift for building back mass, and dude nice clean lifts.

  • Isn't this just called a barbell row? I don't think Pendlay came up with this, though he seems to be unintentionally getting all the credit.

  • I think the difference lies in the way the position is fixed and the weight is lifted of the ground every rep. Not sure though why it's called Pendlay Rows.

  • I just recently switched over to Pendlay Rows and i like it alot more, I feel it hits my lats more than normal rows but that's just me. Good form on your rows btw.

  • Pendlay rows will build massive strength all over, if you are an athlete or strength fanatic, Pendlay Rows are a must, they also build more mass than any machines out there.

  • It's not a shrug so much as it is fully relaxing the lats befor performing the next rep.

  • Fantastic form. Really great, though I also have the same question as a previous poster. Why do you shrug before each rep?

  • Quick question , when i tried doing these today, i couldnt get the bar to touch my lower pecs - even with just the bar i couldnt, does it really matter?

  • What is the purpose of shrugging prior to each rep. You appear to be shrugging your shoulders. Is this a way of "setting" yourself into proper position to execute the lift?

  • @SCROGY

    @ahmsv1

I think with the shruggin youre referring to the flexing of the lats, in order to lift the weight. I don't see how you can not 'shrug' prior to lifting the weight.

  • Well, it's as if he shrugs right before every set, rather than just lifting the bar without the shrug. He "sets" his shoulders towards his ears and back , then lifts. I was wondering what this accomplishes from a biomechanical standpoint.

  • He's deloading the weight

  • I find Pendlay Rows the most difficult exercise of all (much more challenging than deadlifts and romanian deadlifts, IMHO).

It's now six weeks since I've included them in my training and I still don't feel comfortable.

It's not easy to keep your back straight and parallel to the floor while lifting a heavy barbell.

    Maybe it's just me...

  • excellent form man, your seem to be the only one on youtube that can do these correctly and with such weight aswell! Glen Pendlay would be proud!

  • geez, doesnt that hurt your back?

  • No, these are Pendlay rows.

  • Nice lifting bro!

  • Very Nice. U see so many crappy vids on penrows it's good to see one with strict form. Love'n it.

  • Yea awesome idea! He should also focus on biceps. That's where true strength comes from!

.....Fuckin idiots who don't know shit about lifting....

Ignoring the retards, nice form man.

  • Excellent form, well done

  • Very good example of proper Penrow form -- and good weight, too!

  • Wow. Awsome form. way to go. I can do only 185. I'm trying to keep my form as strict as you.

  • Damn, this is a good show! I keep linking everybody to this video to show them how Pendlay Rows are really done.

  • Where is the bar hitting your waist exactly and how wide is your grip? Thanks for the video, impressive lift.

  • Upper abs, and grip about shoulder width

  • strong fucking back wow

  • Vittu mikä sika :D

  • That is a good looking pendlay row.

  • aren't you supposed to look straight ahead, not the floor?

  • I've already commented on this, if you look back through the comments... Yes, you are. The first 2-3 reps I've got here were done correctly. The last few, I should have kept my head up but did not. Sue me. ;-)

  • ok. thanks for the advice.

  • I thought you were meant to look at the floor for these. Strong lifts either way.

  • @PlagueAngel77 it helps prevent your back from overarching. it can cause vulnerability to injury. always good practice to look forward.

he does clean reps, good video

  • do you have to set the weight down b/c i do em w/ less weight (just 1 35lb on each side) and it doesnt touch ground b/c i am 6 foot 1?

  • yeah let the bar be entirely dead before you start ur next rep (don't just touch the ground completely let go of it weight wise)

  • whats the difference between a pendlay row and a normal row?

  • If you can't pull it without aids, then you cant pull it. Hes doing just fine. The key to this exercise is form, belts make up for a weak lower back which this guy dose not have.

  • that's a bit insulting to the hiv+ community

  • very nice -- looks like it can pack on a lot of strength, I'm going to learn this one.

  • perfect form vike

  • Those are the best Pendrows (as I call 'em in my training log *:D*) I've seen.

  • Fantastic rowing! Very strict form with heavy weight.

  • damn thanks for the video I needed to see someone do it b/c only text descriptions are hard to follow

  • Very impressive weight with excellent form. I can currently do 160 lb. Pendlay Rows for 5 reps with good form.

  • I never done these before, just normal bent over row. How do you rate them compared to bent over row? I like the snatching movement.

  • They're a much more controlled movement than your typical bent row, and obviously are not supposed to rely on any English to complete the rep. Both are good movements and I'd say both have their place. I think I'd say I'm partial to these over bent rows, but these are what I know best. Bent rows are a good movement too.

  • great form buddy. would you mind telling me your height and weight? I just started pendlay rows this week and would like to compare to see where I am at and what kind of goals to set. thanks!

  • 6 foot, 260LBS :)

  • Wow awesome form

  • Thank you. Turns out, AFTER I made this video, I found out there was actually one thing wrong with my form. On the last 2-3 reps, I kept my head DOWN. You're supposed to keep your head up, looking forward. Helps keep the lat arch nice and tight.

  • True didnt even notice lol.

  • I think the 2nd edition of Starting Strength will clarify Mark's position on this, but if you look at his advice for every other lift, it's to keep a "neutral" cervical spine. E.g. he has people look down 6-10 feet in front of them in a squat with their neck "turtled" back into the bar.

If you are keeping a proper arch in your back, then the "chin tuck" think Rip recommends would actually call for you looking DOWN in a row, which seems more natural, imho.

  • All respect to Mr. Rippetoe, I like this with a contraction in the erectors along the entire spine.

  • That was outstanding form, bravo.

  • BP is da house

  • Good on the deloads too

  • Thanks. This is very informative. Nice form!

  • Thanks vikingman for post this too.

  • Thanks for posting this, I have wanted to see how these are meant to be done.

  • I concur, VM. Looks great.

  • textbook. I'm bookmarking this and I'm going to show it to people who ask "what's a Pendlay row look like"?

  • Thanks man. For anyone wondering, there are two 25LB plates outside each of the 45's, plus a 5 and a 2.5.
