It is common in the really socially backward states (Orissa, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh). But then again, it's hard to find a group that isn't discriminated against there. We call them "socially backward" for a reason. "Travelling" isn't the same as having lived there, and eve-teasing while a common problem isn't discrimination.

I watched this movie last year and it was a mind opening to the religious and traditional ignorance of the people  of the time. Outcasting the mostly vulnerable elements of society and marginalizing them to the side. I like the scene where one of the woman wishes a man to be otherwise, and everyone gasped in disbelief.
