In terms of mass and glide speed the space shuttle isn't so outrageously off from typical navalized fighter aircraft that the scenario is unthinkable. No doubt a quick thinking air officer could jury rig something that would give the shuttle at least a fighting chance.

That said, if a real life landing went anywhere near as well as this one, it would be a minor miracle. Nice flying!

I play both X-Plane and MS FSX. And I know difficulties of landing on a moving carrier. But man, what a rouch, hard and fast landing?! Video is good and landing is not so good. Cheers.

@axe1203 Guys I know you think this was a terrible landing and all, but here's a few things to consider:

1. I was flying this with no HUD. No way to track my elevation changes. Now way to track my airspeed or vertical decent rate. No way to flare appropriately or level out at the right altitude. I was flying pretty much exclusively with an outside view of the shuttle, which is very hard in a limited control situation such as a landing.

@axe1203 2.The only time I used an inside view was when I released the chute which they use anyway whenever the shuttle lands. The shuttle has several miles to stop normally, but I did it in under 100 meters. The lowest speed the shuttle can maneuver is 150 knots. Any lower and you face stall and inability to correct your course.

...make that 195 knots, at an approach angle nine times that of an airliner (I don't know what naval aviation does). It usually needs a tad over 2.5 miles of landing space; I doubt it could possibly land on an aircraft carrier.

i live right next to one of the space shuttles alternate landing sites (chennault int airport lake charles louisiana) and the runway is only 2 miles long so yeah it dont need 2.5 miles stop

@puncheex The navy does about 150-160 knots, it would possibly sink the carrier if ever even got on to the carrier in the first place. One shuttle weighs about 200,000 pounds, without any cargo or fuel or people, That is like 50 f-18s, more than half of any supercarrier's complement of aircraft. WITH all of a shuttle's cargo and equipment, I'd say it would have about 1/6th the mass of the entire carrier, which is A LOT.

@TheNewCW: Oh, I agree it would be a major thing, but your mass figures are way off. The shuttle weighs a little over 2000 tons (4 million lbs). A Nimitz class carrier weighs in (or displaces, the naval term) 100,000 tons. The shuttle won't roll it, but it would make waves, as they say. Your average naval fighter, say a loaded F-18, runs about 30 tons.
