Ounces of Prevention — The Public Policy Case for Taxes on Sugared Beverages
Kelly D. Brownell, Ph.D., and Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H.
Sugar-sweetened beverages (soda sweetened with sugar, corn syrup, or other caloric sweeteners and other carbonated and uncarbonated drinks, such as sports and energy drinks) may be the single largest driver of the obesity epidemic.
Intake of sugared beverages is associated with increased body weight, poor nutrition, increasing consumption increases risk for obesity and diabetes; the strongest effects are seen in studies with the best methods and interventional studies show that reduced intake of soft drinks improves health.1 Studies that do not support a relationship between consumption of sugared beverages and health outcomes tend to be conducted by authors supported by the beverage industry.
"I've been vegan for years and I'm in perfect health. Not malnourished at all. You're very misinformed."
That is a very silly notion you have. I had an uncle who smoked heavily throughout his 90 odd years and was very healthy to his "natural" death. We humans are not ALL built the same. In addition, as we age, our body demands change. I use to be able to eat as a teenager and a young adult anything and everything
. Past 50 years, I started to put on fat. After trying numerous high protein diets, no of which worked, Some 6 years ago, I "discovered" low carbohydrate similar to Atkins. It works marvels ! I lost 10 Kg over 12 months and have stayed 70 Kg since then.. So don't be so smug!
What might work for you does not work for the majority.
thanks for showing your ignorance! and vegans can take b12 supplements. not to mention not all vegans eat tofu. eating meat is anything but rational. people can survive, not to mention thrive on plant based diets their entire lives. nothing has to die for me or anyone else to live, especially an animal that deserves to live just as much (or more, since it's probably of the same intelligence level as you, but isn't as ignorant) as you do.
I love how she talks about how easily converted she was. Just by reading one article, published by PETA-one of the biggest contributors of propaganda-and she just automatically takes it as the word of God. That just shows a real lack of intelligence.
Well if you read the book, she definitely does not have a lack of intelligence on it now based on all of the research they had to do. You're ignorant and therefore hypocritical...
That's right, and the dairy industry didn't force itself on elementary schools, telling them that milk is good for children and sending teachers milk-promoting teaching materials and lesson plans. EVERYONE sees propaganda everyday without even noticing it. Check out the National Dairy Council website. Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin risk getting sued by the meat and dairy industries, they gain nothing from telling you about the realities of milk and meat. Dairy profits everything.
What's your point? The Dairy Industry is a company just like PETA is an organization, both need money to survive and will lie their asses off to get that money.
My point is that I've done investigations on my own of farms and the conditions of animals, PETA's claims are legitimate and the situation in factory farms, circuses, laboratories, etc. is real. The difference between PETA and the dairy industry is that PETA is a non-profit organization while the milk industry is only out for profit. Propaganda is information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause. PETA's cause is to raise awareness of the suffering of animals.
If you honestly believe PETA doesn't lie or munipulate the truth in order to gain support for their cause and to keep their organization alive than there is no point in continuing this conversation. And I'm not trying to dispute the fact that the milk industry is out for profit, of course they are, why they be anything else?
When I used the word propaganda I meant it in terms of misleading publicity. It means both things you know.
Munipulate! Love the word! I have no idea what it means. In today's world, you cannot trust anyone or any organization, I'm saying, see what is really going on, and do not turn a blind eye. From investigating farms and other animal-using industries myself, PETA's claims are a a lot closer to the truth than the industries they're fighting.
The biggest problem with the VEGAN diet is the over reliance on carbohydrates, in particular sugars from sweet fruit.
Sweet food overeating gives you a perennial "HIGH" from your sugar addiction. This what makes you feel so good. However, like ALL addictions, there are consequences.
There is nothing wrong with sugar from fruit. You need carbohydrates to function, and there isn't an over reliance on carbs if you make sure to get protein and fats. Just because you eat sugar or carbs does not mean you're addicted. The body runs on glucose. Educate yourself about nutrition.
The ongoing Memory in Diabetes (MIND) study, a sub-study of the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial, found that higher levels of hemoglobin A1C levels (a measure of the average blood glucose levels over a 2-3 month period) are significantly associated with poorer performance on three cognitive tasks, which require memory, speed and the ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
So beware of high blood sugar levels by restricting sugar and all carbohydrates
FULL of disinformation .Google weston a price who has done much researh into this Out of all the indigenous cultures NONE were vegetarians . I have tried veganism and have never been weaker moodier and more miserable. Eat organic meat and animal products and give your body what it needs . To get healthy you should eat organic and cut out processed food NOT animal products
I have done loads of reserach and there is nothing ive seen that convinces me veganism is healthy in fact its just the opposite .Veganism is good for short periods of time to cleanse the body but to stay vegan is to malnourish the body and invite ill-health
50% of india is vegetarian, and they always have been.
Veggieness is becoming more and more popular for good reason. We can be healthy on a plant based diet. And it is proven that we are destroying the world with animal farming.
Rory you're amazing, and your book is changing so many lives!! Don't listen to these haters, everyone wants to defend their selfish behavior, and their jealous your vegan lifestyle makes you so damn gorgeous.
@BIGSKYHAL50 What planet are you from? One where tall, thin, toned, clear complections are "terrible"? Wow, I'd hate to live there!

Beware of chronic high blood sugar levels over extended times. Frequent consumption of sweet fruit will do this.

Higher A1C Levels Linked to Lower Brain Function-Study
Results suggest that lowering of A1c levels can reduce the decline in cognitive function.
High sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes are linked to lower cognitive functioning, according to a study
