  • It wasn't a good story. The whole plot is built on a series of improbible coincedences.

  • I was most upset the they broke up the trio for sex appeal. They just kinda pushed Mccoy to the side for Uhura. Star Trek doesn't need sex appeal unless Kirk is getting some green alien chick action. I know its Hollywood and its expected but it doesn't make it right.

  • "That would be like Wesley Crusher taking command of a ship; can he do it? Yeah."

If Wesley ever took command of anything more than a shuttlecraft, I will get myself to San Francisco, walk over to the Golden Gate bridge and do a Peter Pan off the highest ledge I can find and hope Stovo'Kor is still the way I remembered. (I'm joking of course, but I cringed major when you put the words "Wesley" and "command" in the same sentence.

  • I'm pretty ashamed of anyone who more than casually liked this movie. Trekker disappointment aside, this movie was just bland. The actors were meh, Uhura was needlessly trashy, the plot was stale, the script was pretty generic...I could go on. Sure, it had good graphics, but when the story is pretty fail, good graphics mean nothing.

  • Continued: Large corporations like Budweiser and Nokia still exist in the 23rd Century. Orion slave girls are allowed to serve in Starfleet... wouldn't that be a little distracting to the male crew members? Also, a Starfleet Officer doesn't "enlist," he/she is commissioned. CDR Spock is dating Cadet Uhura?! Seriously?! Spock throws Kirk out an airlock. Does the Enterprise not have a brig? Why does the new warp speed effect look like quantum slipstream? I could go on I guess, but I am too pissed.

  • Capt Herb, did you also find it quite insulting for JJ to throw in MULTIPLE references to Star Wars? Also, the set design for main engineering was full of STEAM pipes from some old brewery! The transporter technology was like some kind of "tasmanian devil" from Looney Toons, in addition to them not being able to lock on a target falling through an atmosphere, yet being able to transport onto a ship which is light years away at warp speed!

  • this... is a bit late, but i think i can resume a lot of anxiety in one sentence: it's just a movie. but! understand the anxiety. but! also, like you said: 2 hours. not much time to develop anything.

  • I thought story and characterization were just terrible.

  • Were we watching the same movie? Story sucked. CGI was far more there than it should be. Casting was God damn awful... I cant understand what you liked.

  • You were too generous. You should have said "If you know nothing about Star Trek, and also nothing about:

    - screenwriting

    - characterization

    - physics

    - basic logic

then you might enjoy this movie."

Apparently a lot of people know nothing (or care nothing) about the above, since this crap movie is so well-liked.

  • I dunno, It seems like Pike has a lot of pull with SFC. Plus Kirk saved the planet with no more damage than some litter in San Francisco bay, I could see if Pike fought for him them letting him take command of the Enterprise. Especially if there's no one else to do it. We don't know what's happened in Laurentien and how many died over Vulcan?

As to a sequel, I thought it was obvious. Cast Antonio Banderas as the villain and have the new Crew stumble across the SS Botany Bay...

  • Now you got to update your uniform - A.

  • Someone in a red shirt should word their criticism a bit more carefully...

  • You're going on about Kirk getting command so young being unrealistic....you do know it's fiction right.

But I'll play you game. Look on the viewscreen during the Jump. it shows that Kirk was a Lt. Kinda like Saavik. (sp?)

Either way, just chill. It's a fun movie.

  • You look a lot like Commander Riker.

  • well if you think about it, pike said he admired kirk's father. so he must have saw something in kirk thats why he was promoted to 1st officer. once spock was emotionally compromised, he became captain. and the point of the movie was to show how kirk commanded the enterprise.

plus this is a prequel. i'm sure the sequel to the star trek 2009 film will cover up somethings...

  • Pike did also say that Kirk's attitude, and philosophies would make a great asset to the fleet, even going as far as to say "Star Fleet NEEDS you"

  • Of course Kirk is just a kid taking over a starship, THAT'S THE POINT!

He became captain so quickly because he cheated his way to the position - besides the fact that he completely wiped out a major threat to the federation without any collateral damage. I mean he even got Pike back off of the ship before blowing it up. NOW THAT is IMPRESSIVE - I'd make him captain.

  • "...besides the fact that he completely wiped out a major threat to the federation without any collateral damage.... "

    Any colleteral damage?

Oh you mean besides the planet Vulcan LOL

  • No Spock was captain then. When Kirk finally took the chair towards the end of the film, he formulated a plan and it worked perfectly.

  • You see less of Scotty because he DIDN'T steal the show. In fact all the stuff with him was best experienced in small doses.

  • Sorry guy but Spock, Scotty and Kirk having already inspired people since the 1960's you're gonna be hard pressed to find anything left in them to wow the 21st century with - so much has happened since then.

    REALLY unfair criticism

  • good review. Well said on all points :) Speak for the masses!

  • Hey Remo , great review , about what you asked , what will they do next ? considering the popularity and the great reviews the movie got im pretty sure they will make a sequel or.......a tv series with the new cast? i mean the cast of the movie were all tv actors its possible. what do u think

  • Well....historically the youngest general in US history was only 20 years old. Sadly, when it comes to jobs in the military rank has no postion over job. So if he given the job of first officer, no matter what his rank is, he is the first officer. If Captian dies well first officer becomes captian. Technologically Kirk going form cadet to captain is very much possible....Highly unrealistic but possible.

  • I agree that it was wrong to blow up Vulcan and to make Kirk captain that fast, that is unrealistic. Vulcans can teach humanity many lessons. If you think about it hard enough, this movie is inspiring. Kirk grew up as a rebel and constantly breaking the law. Pike inspired him to be better, to be something bigger, to reach his full potential. He did that by saving the federation-that's an inspiration in itself. Another inspiration is working together with a rival and doing good- kirk and spock

  • I agree with you as a fellow Trekker. Tell me, did it bother you near the start of the movie that Nokia had product placement? The car phone communicator was a Nokia, as if that company will exist in 200 years.

  • They blew up Vulcan to bring some much needed hardship and reality to the series. It always irked me as an avid Star Trek fan, every episode seemed to rely on a perfect resolution simply because the 'script said so.' In the reboot, sometimes the unthinkable will happen and there's just nothing we can do about it.

  • well said. Star Trek has long been considered too 'bright and shiney' and not gritty enough. I invite the new hardships

  • great review. as much as i enjoyed the film, another thing was that chekov was on the enterprise's maiden voyage in this film... and in the series he didnt crop up until later. But I guess we have the whole alternate timeline thing to thank for that.

  • Fall down some stairs, asap.

  • At last.. a star trek true fan review! I agree 1000%!

  • I have written three full length screenplays and never sold or had any of them optioned.

  • @remo2012 The Hollywood business is full of people who will rip you off. Do yourself a favor and keep your screenplays to yourself, and you will die a much happier man. If you are serious about writing, then you need to write a lot more than just three screenplays. When I was elementary school I had written more screenplays than you. I'm not saying any of them were good.

  • This guy should REALLY compose his thoughts before he turns on the camera. It's a rambling mess; and I can't take his review seriously while he wears a Star Trek uniform. Has he ever SOLD a screenplay, or has he merely written them?

  • I was a bit confused until you said "I've been in Star Fleet longer than that", and in that moment the uniform and so many other things made perfect sense.

  • A couple things.

Since as you said 2 hours isn't that much, any inspiration will likely have to come through the next movies now that the characters are established.

I don't think the Enterprise was the flagship at this point. It was largely because of Kirk in the prime timeline that it became so.

  • NITPICK ALERT!!!!

  • I hated this movie so much I now call it star trek #11 the afterbirth!

  • I was hoping to hear an in-depth, honest review like this. Great review! Although I liked the actors for these classic roles, I kept thinking too many things were messed up about this movie. My beefs: 1 Old Spock hung around too much 2 Factory-like sets 3 Ice cave coincidence 4 Red matter?? 5 Dumb villains (in Armani trenchcoats) 6 Spaz fighting (with swords!) 7 mind meld (exposition!) 8 Vulcan destroyed! 9 meth lab editing 10 Overall depth, tempo of Sat morning cartoon
  • I do disagree on the Vulcan thing, but without doing a spoiler, lets just say it was necessary for this movie's storyline. And as for you playing a bad guy in the sequel.......you'd make a great Klingon Captain Herb.

  • This is possibly the worst review yet. Come on, man ... 'this is the most honest and best review on the internet'? One of the first things you lark on about is CG and eye candy!

    Back to objectivity school mate!

  • Spot on Capt. Herb. I had the EXACT same critique after seeing the film

  • I totaly agree with you. That was just in my mind, too.

Not only the blew up Vulcan, they even destroyed originial timline Romulus. And from Kadett to Catain? No Way!

  • I love Star Trek so much have to tell the truth.

  • best review on here

  • He didn't even finish StarFleet Academy!

Sulu had more rank than Kirk!

  • It would be kind of a stretch giving him capitan that soon but if you think about it in ancient history, Hannibal and definately Alexander got to be almost instantly in Alexanders case sucessor of whatever their fathers leaded? maybe i dont know ! :P

  • tell em herb, maybe SFA will let you go long enough to tell em how to make the next one

  • so you are saying its a tight yet bad script ? your rant doent seem to fit with what you said at the beginning

  • If you want to see Star Trek the movie for free, follow this link:

    moviem*tv/action/star-trek/

    replace * with dot

  • That's pretty how I felt. While watching I was impressed with all the eye candy, but walked out of the movie house uninspired.

I think they had to go with a simple formula good guys v bady guy plot.

The original Series was flat out Sci Fi, many episodes with no bad guy. Just adventure & Science in the Galaxy.

There was 0 Science in this movie.

The couldn't even come up with a name for "Red Stuff" Anti matter, Quantum gravity?

This was a mass audience thing that could confuse people.

  • startrek#11 the next degeneration is so lame I rank the sci-fi movies wing commander and the green slime above it...any episode of babylon-5 or andromeda is vastly superior to it...its just homoerotic emo suck!

  • They blew up Vulcan just to break Canon and get totally away from what you expect, its a deliberate severing from what you know....they cut the trekkies who just cant move on totally loose by blowing up vulcan. It was a statement I think. As to whats being secretly done to the 12 inch Mr. Scott behind closed doors by this guy......no comment.

  • Nothing sucked more than Star Trek: Enterprise, nuff' said.

  • 16may2009 this video wins milwaukee science fiction expert peterjay wember...'s titanium rocketship award for superior thought...clarity of vision...loyalty to ideals... and fan dedication...

  • startrek#11the next degeneration is so lame that it makes the movie galaxyquest( sci-fi/comedy 1999) look like a hugo and nebula winner...red matter is what klingson blast into the toilet after eating far too much gogh (worms) the only blackhole these emo-crowd writers are really concerned with is up uhura's miniskirt!

  • According to the novel Best Destiny, James Kirk had visited the Enterprise at age 16 while his Dad, George, was still serving under Robert April [from the last cartoon, The Counter-Clock Incident]. Also, according to the STAR TREK ENCYCLOPEDIA, Kirk had served aboard both the Republic and the Farragut before he took over the Enterprise.

  • True, but in the words of Nero, "that was another life" in another timeline.

  • Sounds like a lazy plot device to do whatever the heck you want to do.

  • call it what you will, however the simple fact is that by changing the timeline it allows a reboot.

  • without the romulan empire the gorn reptoids will invade! (see arena)...this emo kirk will get beat to pulp by a gorn! he's just an emo girlieman!

  • these wannabe trekkies who try to defend the huge flaws in startrek#11the next degeneration...with their crayon scribbling levels of bevis and butthead attempts at scientific understanding have started to sicken me so I shall go to the toilet and puke red matter...oh yeoman janice rand I truly have lost you forever!

  • This is a joke post, right ?

  • They started an entirely new Star Trek with the story. Genius

  • I agree that blowing up Vulcan sucked. Ruins many things in the Trek universe, but, Oh, well.

Maybe some good can come from it down the line. I am hopeful of the future.

As to Nero's beef in the old time line, Romulans do things for their own reason an perceive insult where they will...not logically. As to Kirk in command , it IS possible as he was appointed, by Pike, to 2nd in command to Spock . Pike left the ship. When Spock resigned, Kirk got command . That's REAL military protocol.

  • the only good remake was solaris with george clooney...most of the suck because they are dummied down for budweiser drinking epsilons...who yell what's up ! in ebonic to each other...star trek is quality science fiction not a story board coloring book for the attention deficit disordered!...dont piss in my beer mug and hype to me that itis beer! wtf!

  • they could of made a cool new startrek movie with new ship and crew and some cool gorn reptoid vs tholian vast interstellar war...instead we get this red matter soiled tampon of a comic book film for budweiser drinking epsilons!

  • startrek#11the next degeneration is a laughable comicbook cadet-3 kirk is identical to johnny storm human torch out of fantastic-4...cadet-3 to bird colonel/naval captian only in comic books and nocturnal emissions...what idiotic spacejunk!

  • kess lanced the boils on neelix's fat but and drained the red matter and all the comicbook level puss for startrek#11 the next degeneration!

  • tell me why is mr tuvok the vulcan screwing uhura who acts like hoshi...the red matter is uhuras' monthly period and pms rag...this startrek#11 sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls!

  • red matter is what the avgn blows in his kleenix!...where is nurse chapel and yeoman janice rand in this marvel comic book tower of suck! I want my money back! nero is so lame neelix could beat him up!...sucky fake blackhole contrived silly timetravel poop!

  • milwaukee trekkie since 1965 and I have my teal blue green tng uniform on...cpt herb is right and he is a hero of the federation to point out mediocre remake startrek#11 the next degeneration a comic book level film only good for riff on mst-3k spacejunk amish misundrestanding of science!

  • why not blow up Vulcan, why not blow up EARTH.

what do you guys care if vulcan gets blown up or if the romulans got introduced too early?

star trek needed a clean slate away from technobable and continuity geeks who forced rick berman and branon braga to push out crappy series after series.

this is the BEST MOVIE IN THE PAST 2 YEARS other than dark knight.

stop over analyzing what was effectively a GREAT FILM.

this is why paramount got an outsider to do trek other than overthinking geeks.

  • To promote a 3rd year cadet to captain of the Federation flagship is............illogical.

  • In this case, forget logic, do what feels right.

  • Even if that means making a flashy movie with little to no substance so we can sell lots of tickets and popcorn? I do suppose money and popcorn are enough to make everyone "feel right."

  • No, it's a Spock quote from the movie :D

  • True, but a necessity at the time. He was promoted to first officer when Pike had to leave, and promoted to Captain when Spock had to step down.

  • the movie was a good science fiction film..cool action sequences, faced paced space battles, the only problem is that it is not a star trek film. How can you destroy vulcan its crazy..im really annoyed that jj felt he could kust do that. I can forgive the cheezy lines "i like this ship", the plot holes (kirk just happens across spock on the ice planet) but i cant forgive the fact that he changed the history

  • Really? If we take at movies based on other media 80% of them turned out bad. If a movie was made by a fan for the fans (with side promotion to introduce new people to the ST universe). It'll probably great or greater than this movie.

  • yea what about the vulcan/andorian conflict? without vulcan....which is present in the 24th century......tho loved this movie 10 outa 10!

  • I totally agree with everything you said.

  • and some of the writing + directing was pretty bad!! a few examples: Uhura and spock as a couple??? First of all there was no advantage to story to have them romantic! That scene on transporter pad, when spock and uhura are kissing in front of bones and kirk , Pleassssse!!! a young spock would NEVER act like that on duty (he's much to private) unless he was in heat!!!(every 7 years) The way that old spock and young kirk meet is just really bad, Can u say Yoda??? who wrote that part? lucas!!

  • I would give this movie a 3 on 5 based on the fact that I know star trek! The special effects were very battlestar galatica (the new one) They use that slightly moving camera side to side effect. I found the colors during space scenes dull, and the general clarity dull. The sound during space scenes was cool for the first space scene or 2, but every time!! Its was like u were under water all the time (ringing ears) or hit by conc grenade.

  • This great review reminds me of the first time I've been watching TOS as a kid. Back then I thought, "Spock is awesome! Why isn't he the Captain? Not that hothead Kirk!"

Honestly, I still think that way, and something tells me, I'll like a 24 years old greenhorn even less. Nevertheless, based on the reviews I'll enjoy the movie. Thanks for sharing, remo2012!

  • Why not go back in time and safe his planet. Even with Vulcan gone, Romulus is still going to be blown away.

I just I can nick pick all day the more I think about it.

In the past few days I have had so many non Star Trek fans tell me they love it. They are all in their 20's.

Perhaps the Old Captain it too old and out dated to like a bunch of eye candy with out the soul of TOS.

Maybe now I am a "Captain Dunsel".

  • I have been a Star Trek fan for over 20 years and am not in my 20s and I loved it.

    Your point?

  • "Is Nero's revenge justified?"

Romulus anger + seeing your planet get blown away = illogical desire to blame.

  • LOL, I wouldn't call Vulcan's destruction a social commentary, I would say that, given the plot, I don't see Nero using a practice throw-away planet. Plus, seeing as Spock's character development involves emotions, the story should go for something that is ~really~ going to emotionally compromise him.

I prefer putting deep scars in the geography to melodramatic character derailment, new "plot devices", or shifting alliances BECAUSE it's bolder. It's change, irreversible change.

  • I agree with you

  • I agree with you 100% ya Kirk got promoted too fast! NO WAY THAT WOULD EVER HAPPEN, EVEN IF HE IS A BAD ASS. This movie has too much of a Star Wars feel, the space battles look more star wars the star trek! Don't you find a lot of similarity with Nemesis? I mean shit, to big back spider ships coming after earth. COME ON. Anyways you are worth of your CAPTAINS rank.

  • A Captain in Starfleet is like Full-Bird Colonel!!!!

  • You may be right, 35 always seem about the right age for a young Captain.

  • I think Kirk was actually 29 when he got command in the novels. Shatner was 35 though.

  • you're a big nerd.

  • Yeah, the timeline got all messed up when Kirk's dad died.

That's why everything turned out different than what it was in TOS.

It's not supposed to be the same Star Trek.

But it's not supposed to be something different all together.

I thought it was more than fine. It was excellent.

  • He's not just any cadet. He's Captain Kirk. Just like Spock is not just any Vulcan. Some are just the chosen few. Luke Skywalker is the THE Jedi. Captain Kirk is THE Kirk. And while Star Trek may have inspired you, the series has always had elements that defy science as we know it. It is fiction after all. Does anyone actually knows what is gonna happen on the other side of a black hole?

  • Who the hell cares it is a movie, I have a friend in it and will watch it and like it for that! The problem with hard core "nerds and geeks" is they tend to WAY over think everything. Why not just go and enjoy a film?

  • You look handsome in that uniform... I love a man in uniform. :P

  • I loved this. no complaints. And I am a star trek fan. Blowing up Vulcun was a great! It took guts and I respect it.

Best star trek movie ever made. New time line new rulees. once the Future Romulan ship distroyed kirks dads ship it gave the writers alot of freedom to redifine the characters...we should not try so hard to compare them to what was done in TOS.

  • Blowing up Earth would take guts. The writers are incompetent and cowards

  • Lol, wanna know why this movie is different then the other ones? The old ones were bad, you might want to check what you lived your life for.

  • lol, look at the nerd in the star trek uniform

  • I disagree, the new BSG was great and it made me think and feel about life, this didn't. Perhaps after I see it again... I don't know.

  • His critique of people not being "inspired" by these new adaptations of the characters is flawed. He was inspired because he was a child when he first saw Star Trek. Children are naturally impressionable. Now he is an adult seeing a thing that already has instilled wonder in him. It's a biased viewpoint. Children are the only people who can comment on this perspective.

  • This was not at all Star Trek; it could have been written by a Junior High School student...probably was. Add to that the worst movie making experience i have witnessed ever...

  • Really?

    The worst movie experience ever?

I mean i get that you are a fan but really.

There are horrible horrible movies out there.

Glitter... Step Up... Gigli... Alone in The Dark (watch that, Tara Reid plays the smart girl who can't pronounce newfoundland)

  • Dragonball: evolution was the worst movie ever made.

  • More heart of some of the best stories from the TOS and this movie could have been a ten.

    Miri

City on the Edge of Forever

    May not:

    Spock's Brain!!!

    Space Hippies!!!

  • You have a very good review. I agree with your points. The movie is magnificent but I found those things that you talk of truthful even though it was amazing. @ MidgardDragon2, he in no way insulted the movie for looking good and being fast paced. He's talking about things in the movie that appear to be ridiculous. You on the other hand, have no idea of what you're talking about. Listen to what he rants about and really look at it into perspective.

  • i think this cast and story was excellent!!! couldnt have picked better, each actor was spot on. as for the story ,.. i think the timeline divergence is a great way to start a brand new batch as movies, new timeline new stories, maybe a new tv series?? wicked. all in all 5 stars!

  • I agree about the couple of plot holes, but it's not the first time for a Star Trek movie. Overall I think it could have used an extra 30 minutes of plot development instead of just action. I'd love to see a TV show, but I don't know what they could do except have a new ship and crew like the Intrepid.

  • It will change every thing for sure. But why Vulcan!!!!!

  • My biggest grief with the movie is that the motive of the bad guy is pretty weak. His home-world gets destroyed so he opts to travel back in time and attempt to destroy the federation by blowing up the planets of the founding members? Wouldn't it make more sense if you got stuck in the past to ... i dunno prevent the disaster from happening in the first place or just warn them in advance.

  • They blew up Vulcan basically to change the course of history. With only 10,000 Vulcans, they can justify any changes from TOS they want and still have enough enough left for the fans. I think it's a great idea and am excited to see what happens to Spock and his people.

  • r u retarded? PIKE IS CPT!! omf. like seriously, dude he wasn't 'chosen' to be CPT, Bones dude did u watch the movie, then he wasn't alloud to go so Bones fucking made him sick so he could be on the ship.. then pike went to the romulan ship THEN Spock, whose Vulcan and genius... who was put in command then old Spock told him it was destiny... dude i've been a trekk...er/ie whatever since birth.. Maybe its plot scenario for the sequel where [i hope] it never happens... i dunno. but srsly, shutup.

  • Give me a break. I've been a Trek fan for 30 years. I've watches every episode, every series and every movie hundreds of times. This is not how Star Trek works. The movie is too flashy, the actors talk to fast and the accents are too heavy. Seriously, this movie ruined it for me.

  • One thing that PISSED me off was....why did Nero just sit there for 25 years waiting for Spock (He was trying to help). What the hell were they doing all that time, talk about a loyal crew. Why not just warn Romulus of what's going to happen and when. Then find a way back to their time period. I also love the way that Kirk manages to run into Spock, he just so happened to run in exact direction of Spock considering how big Delta Vega is. Other than that i loved it :D

  • I'm a GIGANTIC Abrams and Lindelof fan, and I can tell you this: Star Trek is in GREAT hands, because these guys LISTEN to the fans.

When the fans absolutely hated a character in the Lost forums, they killed that character mercilessly. When the fans came up with cool nicknames for stuff in the show, we found it regurgitated in the ACTUAL show as fanservice.

    These guys PAY ATTENTION.

So go off about the shortcomings of their first Star Trek.

    You'll **** your pants to Trek 2 (12).

  • Hey, I liked Charlotte!! :p

  • It is just that TOS is so special to many of us.

A reboot is fine and it is a good film, it could have been so much more if it had more heart.

  • But why is that? it was bad made, the stories were boring to tears, why is it people like TOS so much????

  • yea, I thought the movie sucked and was really bad 'movie making' in general. And for a Star Trek movie, it had absolutely no substance or heart at all. The intelligence was non-existent...the mindless might like it though.

  • tattooedboy04, Check it out, 96% on the tomato meter. You don't have to be mindless to like this movie, just open-minded. If you can make better movies, please do.

  • Trekies like you are the reason Star Trek has a bad rap. "there's no way that would happen in real life"...IT'S A FUCKING MOVIE DUDE! GET OVER YOURSELF! The whole reason for this movie is to rejuvenate the franchise and to be DIFFERENT! Easily the best Star Trek movie other than First Contact.

  • Excellent review on the new star trek. But there is one thing I like to know, why did they have spocks mother die, because she is not dead in the star trek voyage home. I just thought that part was not right to have his mother die when she is not dead in the other movies, and she was also on TNG in season three Sarek. But anyway just did not know why they had to do that. 5 star for this video. Great Review.

  • That wasn't Spock's mother Amanda in TNG. It was Sarek's second wife, Perrin.

  • As for blowing up Vulcan, Spock himself basically said that Nero's arrival in the 23rd century changes history, so nothing that's already happened (TOS) will happen quite the same way.

  • Ok, thats right. My bad, thanks for clearing that up for me.

  • Great Review! Yep there were sure a few teary moments. I loved this movie :)

  • Dude! James T. Kirk is like Napoleon and Alexander the Great! He is a living legend! What show were your watching? When you meet a Romulan, you either kill him or he/she will kill you. What show were you watching?

  • Oops! typos!
