I have never been to this castle, despite I'm big fan of this movie. Anyway, I'm planning to visit Hohenwerfen next summer (maybe already this winter because of the atmosphere). I like it!
@Havanaroyal87 : you are totally right Havanaroyal87, when i'm watching this movie and when I contemplate this castle, i feel as if I were back to (and in) the game Wolfenstein again.
@nedleraar : yes splendid video seen by more than 80.000 people ! And the hollywood movie itself, and its ambience, were really perfect, a masterpiece. And this music.......
As you can see, Von Hapen is wearing a black ss uniform w/ swastika armband. Now, Holywood is an apparent claimer of a majority of these uniforms, saying almost all their movies have the uniform in them. Now, apart from: Where eagles dare, 633 squadron, inglorious bastards and dead snow (not holywood, but the only other movie i known with that uniform). What other movies has this uniform in, and please give me a list? Thank you.
Millions died, more millions got mamed, raped or lost everything. But wait we are still fighting! War still not over among us the third generations. See how much impurity we human kinds have waiting for the next one..

Listen up all you fucking idiots, you are not impressing anyone your intelligence is as a fucking worm farts in fairytale so shut the fuck up and enjoy the video before someone stabs you in your fucking eye with a Popsicle stick. The end.
bloody hell children! Why do people have to fight about such stupid things? each side had their advantages and disadvantages! even though the allies won, the germans were still badass soldiers, not all were nazis, most were just caught up in what they thought was the best thing to do. the allies also were badass. and thank God they won, too!
ozeangruen....just wanted to help you out on your history a little:
Braun did not invent rocket technology. Nazi Germany in the early 30's had to borrow the plans from *gasp* an Amereican physicist (Goddard) because of 'technical difficulties'.
Braun was labeled a Nazi, so after the war he really had no rights. In fact he should have been hanged because of eye witness testimonies at the concentration camps. But US politics have rarely made the best decisions.
@kretze lol if i would have a look at google earth. Processing fee??? You have no clue how much money i left in San Francisco during my vacation there. Your country is not able to pay by themself for security? Boy you talk fairytales. Wernher von Braun was in the Naziparty and a member of SS. He was also accountable for lodging and housing of jewish detainees in "Dora Mittelbau" He and his fellow scientist surrender themself to Americans and get a warm welcome.
hey kretze talebearer! first of all I´ll bet you haven´t a clue where Remagen is. Secondly. I still remeber waving him back as the bridge collapsed. Thirdly without the captured Nazis scientists you still would be in a technical medieval time. At the moment your country is such poor that your kongress discuss about an entry fee of 10.00 USD-6,80 from every tourist.
What's the wager?? 50°34'45.34"N - 7°14'38.95E . As he wasn't among the unlucky 28, my grandfather is still doing well. He's pleased you remembering him.
Scientists having emigrated into the US after the war, weren't Nazis but had been forced staying in Nazigermany during the short thousand years.
Unfortunately the security situation had changed dramatically after 9/11. Those 10US are simply a processing fee, to cover expenses caused by screening of people travelling to the US.
The British SAS waged a lot of missions during WW2 like this.. Entering a German Submarine and capture the ENIGMA. In that case I never heard about comando´s from US side. Sure at last days of war they captured Wernher from Braun and a lot other German Nazi Scientists also some Airplanes. Me -262, GO- 229, Arado-234,Me 323 Gigant...Missiles like V2 and and and. Most of those Nazi Scientist hand semself over to US Army and had a good live becaming US citizen
what a stupid movie! The Germans in that Movie are always blockheaded and the Allied Forces where well trained and good organized. I wonder why they had such casualities in WW2.
Small raiding units are a German invention. Without the Germans you had never mad it to the moon. This Story is based on facts of liberation from Mussolini. Crackhead! And check out on youtube " Fort Eben Emael" Think the German´s where a bit better trained "check out Ardennen Offensive on youtube. Twit !
The story is set behind enemy lines in the Alps. The Allied invaders would have been highly selected top rate operatives. In contrast, the best German troops would have been at the front. Those Germans in the film were not portayed as being elite but rather rear echelon guards.
this is the kind of movie you watch with your buddy drinking scotch on wintry snowy cold day maybe shooting some pool or playing chess in a heavily wooded den, deep carpet with lots of book and cigars big fire place in the back ground popping and cracking away
With all the crappy remakes Hollywood does these days, ya'd think they would remake Eagles, using really good actors but obviously altering the plot enough to hide the climax. KEEP the cool music!! I can see nobody remaking Jaws (you can't improve on perfection), but I would be interested in a remake of Eagles if the work was put into it. The Jackal sucked, I know. Kenneth Branaugh as Smith, maybe Mark Wahlberg as Schaeffer. Anybody else think it would be possible??
Very difficult. The remakes of THE HAUNTING, and FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX, AND PLANET OF THE APES all sucked, but the remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERES was at least as good as the original, and the new SUPERMAN, and BATMAN BEGINS (2005) and the sequel THE DARK KNIGHT were outstanding. The STAR TREK got stellar reviews. If is is done RIGHT, it could be great. John Williams must do the music, and Steve Spielberg or James Cameron must direct.
Indeed 2 british comandos did get droped into the mountains of bavaria i think to assasinate hitler they were dressed as jager troops and intended to shoot him on his trip but one of them was discovered and the mission aborted.
I was at Schloss Hohenwerffen in the fall on 2005. Absolutely one of the most breathtaking places in Europe. The castle is well kept and has an excellent tour. It was a prison up until not so long ago and was recently only opened to the general public.
Great movie nice pacing and one of best all time movie themes. It is reminiscent of Ottorino Resphigi's Pines of The Appian Way. Grand, sweeping, stirring and panaramic in scale. Excellent example of illustrative music.
the most under rated war film ever produced. This is miles better than saving private ryan or the great escape (No disrespect intended to tom, dick and harry). Tthis is the best film. the only way they could have made it better is by making the germans speak in German, then you could understand it a bit better
yeah, the castle really exist - i's in Austria, where I grew up. Today I live in the US and I saw that movie at one of my best friends home, when I was a kid around seven or so... a littel bit later we made a vacation and drove to the castle... I never paid to much attention to castles, because we have still a lot of all these nice old buildings, actually in my little village we do have two of them ... I love the soundtracks main theme, very impressive......
A real boy's own saturday morning pictures romp. Yes, Clint with the two machine guns, Richard with the suave enigmatic major. Mind you, when he finds his traitors and ropes 'em up, we're all crying 'kill them'.
This film is well 'ard! Broadsword to Danny boy!In that 'Best 100 War Films' someone quoted they wiped out 89 German soldiers. I like the bit when they're letting rip from the back of the bus. When Mary looks good with a machine gun. Oh yeah and when Derren Nesbitt gets a bullet in the bonce.
where eagles dare greatest ww2 movie of all time... great post. i will have to take my family to see the castle in the near future,heheheh... looks good on the vid...clint with the 2 machine guns firing at the germans how cool is that hehehe...
Where Eagles Dare is the very best WW2 film ever made! There is no other WW2 film even close to it (and I watched many, many WW2 films)! OK maybe only The Guns of Navarone is close but WED is simply the best. This video is nice too.
I like The Bridge On The River Kwai.Where Eagles Dare is an Alister Mac Clean Thriller It's not based on actual WW2 events.I think The Longest Day amd A Bridge Too Far are great WW2 movies The Heroes of Telmark is good also.

It must say: Allied Forces WERE well trained and good organized.
and it must say: ... had so many casualties in WW2
Well, start counting who had more casualties. Who won that dammned war?

I could see Rutger Hauer as the SS major
The problem as I see it , is that they would use people that are just too American and too damn PRETTY .
Use BRITS and GERMANS in the roles where they're intended to be .
Wishful thinking... They'd muck it up somehow . Lousy accents , cheap props.
Better off leaving it be .
