It seemed hopeless, me being but only 1 individual, but I knew that the empire had to be stopped, if not just for my own sake, but for everypony. I rose from my seat, and declared my war against the empire. Thus, I began my revolution.

There is no need for a Lunar Republic because Princess Celestia is niether evil nor a tyrant and if you are willing I am willing to go into much more detail on why I think that. For now though I will say this, being immortal is niether easy nor fun. Being a ruler for over a 1000 years can and would become tiresome, as well as very time consuming. The chains of command weigh heavy...

@JonathonWilder While the official story is that Celestia ruled benevolently for over 1000 years, ponies treat her with fear. If you ruled for that long, you would think you'd have a reputation by now as a kind leader, but ponies such as Twilight, Mr. and Mrs.Cake treat Celestia with fear.

The Elements of Harmony have two uses that we know of. Remove any darkness surrounding you and banish you to the moon for 1000 years. Why did Celestia banish Luna instead of doing what Twilight did?

Perhaps, they were able to wield the Elements because they had the power of friendship. After all, as the show states, friendship is magic. Yet becaus eof who and what Celestia is... her only friend was Luna. She used the Elements of Harmony incompletely and as such was only above to banish NM not save Luna.
