  • There is an (almost) irrational fear that takes over when our children are under the direct control of other people as shown in this video. It's so frightening. That's why I identify so much with what the mother says! What I don't understand is that in the videos where the nurses are scrubbing the full term babies (just born), they never question their method to the slightest degree. It's shocking to me, as many of the nurses are too rough. I guess that they're intimidated by the nurses.

  • To the mom...I don't think that you have anything in the world to apologize for. You were in a very tough position. When is saw the size of those scissors, I was outraged. That nurse should be fired on the spot! Can you imagine how dangerous that was, even if she thought that she was being careful? I was moved by the way the baby fought back as the nurse was inserting the tube into his nose. It was so sad! I hope that the baby is doing well. Best wishes to all of you.

  • hey, i know what u mean by trying not to piss anyone there. i kept my cool too when i had a tough delivery and they just yanked my daughter out, which caused her nerves to rupture. a lot of ppl asked us to sue them to court but i was just afraid that they might not care for my girl properly.

  • holy s*** put those scissors away from his face!!!!!! O_O

  • By no means, am I defending the nurse....but I made an observation that people might not realize. She's right handed and with being in such a confined space,. it would probably be more dangerous to contort her hand with the scissors pointing down. The angle is all wrong. Also she "blocked" the tip of the scissors by cradling it between her left hand fingers. Its still is dangerous, I know and she couldve taken the lid off the incu....etc...theres no perfect solution

  • I am sitting here in tears at the uncaring way that nurse handled and cared for your baby. I totally understand what you are saying about not wanting to rock the boat. She should be sent back to nursing school.

Those pointed tip scissors so close to your precious baby's face made me shudder.

You were put in a difficult an unenviable predicament and my heart goes out to you.

I am delighted that your little lad came thrugh this and luckily wont remember any of this. Bless you both. XX

  • she didn't even use gloves or handshield. And I thought 1st world countries adhere to strict standards.

  • how i love to cut her fingers & not the nails.....hmmmp...

  • Wow very unprofessional for one her long fingernails very unsanitary and the BIG scissors she used she had them pointed toward his face half a brain would have told her not to do that and she was very rough with him. One last thing she dropped his head when she was finished. I definitely feel for you. I wouldn't have went off on her either since she is caring for my baby.

  • I just had one put in, it doesnt hurt its just verry uncomfortible!

  • aahhhwww..... poor baby..

  • what kind of hospital is that?!

  • I dont know of one hospital that allows you to wear fake nails. That is just gross and dangerous.

  • @jereeful I kno...they don't even let you wear fake nails in many food/coffee places..god forbid a cheap nail falls off into a coffee or big mac..

  • this is inhumane!!! I am sickened by how she performed this procedure! Someone needs to call the police!!!

  • why the hell does the nurse have acrylic nails???!!!

  • NICU nurses who wear rings and fake nails should be fired... hopefully everything turned out well... but my gods... what hospital would allow that?!?!?!

  • That's disgusting. You should have reported that to the supervisor or nurse manager. The nurse should have worn gloves. Those nails are not allowed as well. If i was the mother i will surely report that nurse

  • awwww

  • ummm note to nurse... i think the mother is hinting to take ur ridiculous nails off! u shudnt b allowed to wear those wen ur working in a hosp!

  • this is terrible nursing practice i can't believe what i am seeing! the nurse has false nails which she definately should not have, they can harbour millions of bacteria. and im sure she could have found a smaller pair of scissors for his delicate little face! she also has rings with diamonds which arent allowed due to bacteria. im a neonatal nurse myself and this is disgusting and is why so many babies stay so long in NICU due to infections because so many nurses dont follow simple rules.

  • Was he at the royal childrens or at monash??

  • Stupid bitch having nails that long! Babies skin is so soft she could of easily scratched him. And imagine the bacteria under them!

  • yea and she's not wearing sterile gloves... tsk tsk tsk...

  • Inserting an NG tube isn't a sterile procedure

  • i was so worried that the nuse was going to stab the baby when she put the scissors close to his face! God Bless! :)

  • She should have cut her nails before doing that :( poor baby

  • The preemie NG tubes are so thin and tiny and the tape is so little compared to NG tubes for full term newborns. Full term NG tubes are bigger, and the tape looks ugly when its put across the term newborns nose and cheek. But it has to be firmly in place for full term newborns in order for the NG rube 2 stay in place properly. Without a cpap/vent/nasal cannula Its a tube that is in way of you seeing your full term babies nose or face properly when you want to take a nice picture of there face.

  • Cannot believe the nurse has long nails

  • poor little guy hes adorable

  • I agree the nurses nails were way 2 long!

  • @beckyuk2001 groos

  • omg! he didn't even cry. when my sister had the g tube stuck up her nose she yelped, screamed, choked, gagged and stuff. I started crying myself. well, my sis is 4 so she can understand there's a tube going down her throat. that was a quick insertion it took the nurse three times the time to get it down.

  • that bitch nurse is hurting the baby, as stated her nails are

    way too long.

  • This was a good NG tube insertion, but her nails were WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY TOO LONG.

  • usa i guanti o almeno lava le mani e taglia le unghie !

  • gosh her nail was hurting the baby... i think so...

  • i cant believe what i have just watched!

im no nurse or doctor but she looked like she was struggling with those nails to do what needed to be done and hasnt she heard of germs! plus i agree she was quite rough and lucky the baby didnt get scratched..poor little thing..hope he is doing ok. I have 3 kids and i know what it feels like to not want to rock the boat with staff, . He looks like such a sweetheart. All the best

  • As a nurse she is not suppose to have long nails (trap bacteria) let alone acrylic ones. Who is her charge nurse? UGH! that is disgusting (her nails). your baby is so sweet! I wish him all the best

  • Also the scissors can be dangerous Ive heard reports of nurses cuttign babies lips in the NICU with the scissors and almsot cuttting fingers off when removing tape, one toddler got his tip of a fingr lopped of by a nurse check it out udner neonatal doc at blogspot

  • They found out that the adhesive stuff (sticky stuff) that keeps the acrylic nails on carries the germs that can spread from one preemie to the next this happened in a NICU where the NICU nurses wore acrylic nails and many preemies died.

  • OMG you should have reported this nurse! I'm in nursing school and even though it looks like it hurts, it ok. We can't use lube because it will clog his nostrils and since newborns are nose breathers it makes it even harder for them to breathe. The only thing I TOTALLY disagree with is the fact that she has acrylic nails on!!! I can't even have those for SCHOOL much less working as an RN....AND what the heck was she doing with sharp scissors around your baby's face?? I hope your baby is ok!

  • thats a NG tube it goes to their esophagus not to their trachea. It wont block the airway since NG tube is a feeding tube thats why it goes directly to the esophagus...

    Im an RT

  • In what NICU do they let the nurses have nails like that???? OMChrist!!! Im glad your little one is ok!

  • They set the tube right on your babies hand. Of course he'd pull it out if he even just moves his hand. He's such a sweet baby though!

  • I had to watch them doing this to my mom in the hospital using this pacifier thing jammed into her nose to widen the opening. She was on blood thinners. The tube made lacerations down her windpipe and lungs which blood pool and gave her pneumonitis.

  • DId anyone bring this to the Nursing Supervisor for review?

If she did this to this tiny preemie, just think what she might

to do the next baby under her care? So rock the boat

so another baby does not have to endure this procedure

done so carelessly, could lead to more problems for a new

    baby.

  • As a nurse myself I am horrified at her technique. No gloves?! Long nails?! No lubricating the tube? Awful!

  • My thoughts exactly! The nails because of the scratch factor, but also the amount of microorganisms that get a free ride underneath them.

But, oh my gosh is your son a cutie! So adorable.

  • Very poor technique. I would use it to point out all the things that I would not want my nursing students to do.

  • I am disgusted on how harsh this tube is put down and the way the nurse if that what u call her does this the nails the scissors the harsh ness i think this nurse def needs retraining my little boy has a nasal tube and i certainly would not allow this women to insert it poor baby sam

  • What the hell? Looks very unprofessional, and it's just great when she whips out the kitchen scissors and snips right towards the baby's face. Don't they have like, sterilized instruments or something? Poor beautiful, brave baby

  • I agree totally - in retrospect i would reacted very differently to the Nails, the scissors and you said it the'unprofessional' approach. silly but i was trying not to rock the boat.i did not want to piss off those looking after my baby 24/7 in case i ticked off a looney who took it out on my baby - i know it was silly & not probable but in the mind of a stressed out mum certainly possible. leaving your new fragile baby with others certainly makes you tread carefully. Thx for commenting. Nic

  • She definitely should have worn gloves for that procedure.

The long nails are a definite NOT!! I would have loved to

wrap that hose around that nurse's neck.

  • LOL Yes, I'd like to wrap the tubing around the nurses neck too ;) My Dad had to have a NGT this spring and I couldn't believe how painful it was to have it put in and removed, even lubed up :( This makes me want to cry :( But I definitely can relate to Mama not wanting to rock the boat, it's so scary having someone else take care of your helpless little one :(

  • oh hes just gorgeous, he dealt with that well! I hated watching them do the tubes! Poor bubbas!

  • hope he's fine now,...

one thing, why is the nurse's nails long??that's a no no!!

  • Aw, he was pretty good for that.

  • What's really nasty is that nurse's long fingernails all over your baby's face - they are dangerous and a proven source of germs. We're not allowed to wear our nails longer than the tips of our fingers (you shouldn't be able to see them from the other side of your hand) and we're absolutely forbidden to wear acrylic nails at our hospital. I would have like to have see her wearing gloves for that procedure. I hope your sweet baby is doing well.

  • I was also surprised - i have food industry background -& even there the same things apply -i had thought that medical would be stricter.... prehaps she was just flouting regulations.... Cooper is doing well thx.

  • when you feel his lil head it looks soft and cute he has peach fuzz hair how old is he now. even if it looks bad the ngt tube he needs it so he cat eat but he is so cute your a good mommy and the dad is a good daddy

  • skaternic - i know how you felt seeing the tube go in! my boy needed one (he was a 32weeker) and as he moved on the breast feeds the nurses told me to just pull the tube out when you finish giving him the tube feed (as the next feed would be breast) but i just couldnt do it!, leat along watching it!, made me physically ill to watch - just thinking about the poor kid!

  • thx - i still cringe whilst watching, fortunately cooper pulled his out himself, so i didn't have to either. hope your boy is also well.

  • my boy is doing great, healthy little 19mth old now, funny enough just as cheeky as his big brother and sister were /are! lol

  • what a cutie and good about it. lots of love to you and him and you family :) x

  • I think I would take that tube and wrap it around the nurse's damn neck!!

  • It was quite the scene let me tell you. Had the pull out stomach fluid and test it to make sure it was actually in the stomach. Hes 18 months and happy and mostly healthy. Little terror let me tell you! PS Im not medically trained either. They made me do it before we took him home :)

  • Ugh my son had an NG tube and he would pull it out all the time and I had to do it myself. Hes just so cute!

  • Wow, i couldn't imagine doing it my self. that would be too much. I'd be too worried it would end up in a lung, as i'm not medically trained. I Hope you & your boy are doing well. Nic
