  • @masterofthemidgets how do you give your rat a name XD

(ya i know im dumb X3)

  • @XxtokyoNerdxX Spur of the moment ; D

  • He if my rats going out off her cages the not going to me but to the table of the stool

  • he cool video i do it to my rats to but if the going out of her cages the not going to me but to the table of stool. What can i do

  • in your experience, is it ever too late to begin training a rat? great video. (:

  • @hopeattack I think it depends on the nature and mentality of the animal. If they show vibrancy and energy it tends to mean the critter is still mentally very sturdy so is able to learn.

  • my rats are 15 weeks old when i bought them. ive had them for 4 day now and they come out the cage, the problem is how do i get them back in? lol

  • @tammyuk Well first things first they shouldn't be let out unless they're tamed but if they are then its fine. You might just be in the situation where your two, because they are still very young, are so happy and hyper that you just can't grab them lol. I was able to just pic up my two and put them in they cage because they had become relaxed. :D

  • I see that you are a Doctor Who fan. :D

  • Luckily for me my last rattie didn`t need any of this training to come to me when I called him, he just caught on very quickly to his name by me saying it every time I went up to his cage to see him. Now I have a new guy and I think I`m gonna have to start this training with him, he`s much more timid.

  • @bootsiemcgee Naww. Hope it works :D

  • You make it look so easy. I feel like when I let my rats outside of their cage, then they just want to explore, and don't pay attention to me. What do I do?

  • @MasterOfTheMidgets Thanks :) So excited to start training my girls!

  • @MasterOfTheMidgets My rats are about 6 weeks old and they are very active, confident and curious about their environment. I was wondering whether it was okay to start training them yet or if I should wait till they are older.

  • @TheVivaciousNerd That was more or less when I started to train my two. Just be sure to start with sound recognition first though. As well as being a reward indicator it also simply gets them used to being trained ; )

  • i have been trying this for quite awhile. i make the specific sound (tongue click) everytime she comes to me to get a treat. i either make her come all the way to the end of the cage door, or just too me if i am playing on my floor with her. my cage is on a cabinet so she cant come in and out because she cant reach up to it. is this a problem? because if i make the sound, she doesnt react. 8]

  • my rats just come to me normally ever since i got her and him i got the girl 2 months ago and male a few weeks ago but the girl just nos her name with no treat

  • @Violetgamer78 Just by letting them out every so often. It will take quite a few attempts though. Oh they need to be fully tamed by this point too ; )

  • @TuskyHere Te, he, he! Classic ratties! XP

  • my rattie has an exlamation point on her back loll i shuld have named her surprise haha

  • @likerofcheez Te, he, he! Very cute.

  • I have a rat (Boo) and he just turned a year old in May, I've been trying to train him but it seems that Boo is more interested on what is outside of his cage than he is with treats or anything (ironically he will beg for them while he's in the cage) any suggestions will help tons!! Thank you <33

  • @HerHeartTMC527 This is why I started inside the cage (in rat training basics). You begin with the "clicker training" when they are inside the cage and once they get it you then move the traing ouside the cage. Your rat should come to you when you click because they know it means they will get a treat. Continue the training outside the cage for around a week just to engrave the behaviour and then your rat should be ready to learn other tricks.

  • is it me or was you feeding your rat shredded wheat

  • @gamesaver1000 Close. Shreddies. ; )

  • how long will it take for a rat to pick up any trick and learn it by command?

  • @maiacakes12 Less than a week but I always do around to to engrave the behaviour.

  • your hooded rat looks exactly like mine!! omg same arrow shaped marking on their back

  • @uberguitargeek

With one rat, u should go get another rat If you did proper research, you would have known rats are very social animals, and shouldn't be kept alone.

  • with only one rat, should you call a different name as well as the rats name so it will only come by IT's name?

  • you say come on funny :) lol

  • @LieseyGIrlxoxo Blame my accent and I'm really begining to wish I had phrased it differnetly.

  • @MasterOfTheMidgets haha i like ur accent! :)

  • How do u make the Rat come when u make the clicking sound?

  • @RattieLover22 Check out Rat Traing: Basics. ; )

  • How do u make the rats to come when u make some type of sound?

  • @TuskyHere Happy to help. =)

The fan thing is too funny. You should put THAT on youtube. XD

  • Twiglet! I love that name! Excellent videos. I've just started training my boys and these are very helpful.

  • @PurpleOtter21 Thanks. :D

    I'm glad these are useful.

  • What treats did you use cause my babies are stubborn I let them run around the hosue and even let them get used to it their used to it now but their still stuborn and the food or treats I use they aren't really interested please help and also help on shoulder training and also please make a video to make my rats like or be comfortable while I handle them and also show how to handle them thx xoxo :)

    please reply to my message.

  • @suiteangel45 Well its good that you've got them used to being out and about cause its important. Anyway did you start the cliker training inside the cage? Its best to start it when they are in there because then they have nothing to distract them. (But still let them out inbetween the training sesions so they are still comfortable with being outside.) Just keep up with the click and treat routine each day in the cage and they should eventually start to respond then do it out the cage. ; )

  • what treat are you feeding it maybe my rats will like them too and sometimes my little babies are stubborn when I let them off anyways last week I gave them a chance to investigate the whole room but still they are still not interested in the things I'm giving it and yet it doesn't come to me please help I really love them so much. Thanks..... xoxo ;)

  • do u hav to make a sound

  • @PandasNuke Yeah but it doesn't have to be a click. The training will only work if there is a sound that they will associate with a snack otherwise they simply won't be interested.

  • Hi. My rats respond to the treat noise and will take the treat inside the cage but as soon as I take them out of the cage they don't want a treat and don't really respond to the noise either... Whats up?

  • @spongey222 Sounds like your rats are unconfident outside the cage. This means they will more or less egnore you as they are focused on exploring every inch of the room to make sure it is safe. Untill they are cmpletely satified it is ok they will remain convinced that predators could be lurking around every corner. Like I said in the video the trick will not work unless they are confident outside the cage. They should be alowed out everyday to get used to it. It may take a few weeks.

  • @MasterOfTheMidgets That's cool. Thanks very much!

  • @spongey222 No problem. Good luck. ; )

  • does this seriously work?

  • @frecklykass Yep. They're intellignet critters after all.

  • this was very helpful

  • where is your accent from? its awesome :D

  • @TheMVcentral Te, he, he! Thanks. XD

It's form that little place known as the UK

  • Amazing video =] 5 stars for awesomeness and 5 stars for Doctor Who DVD!

  • @tasharox64 Hell yeah! XD

...shame the last few series haven't been so grest though.

  • @MasterOfTheMidgets Yeah, I know. But I still watch them anyway =]

  • Oh what a great name (Twiglet)! I am about to adopt a female rat or two and I can't think of a good name for one.

  • Twiglet is a beautiful name for a rat.

  • @Retrieverman1 Why thank you very much XD

  • How do I make my rats confident outside the cage if they don't know how to come when called? I can't let them wander around unless I'm sure I won't lose them, right?

  • is that chex mix your giving them or a treat if so did you get the treets at walmart or like a pet store and whatis the best kind to get them

  • @IBDAVID2 Its just shreddies. XD I don't really think it maters what you give them as long as its usually helthy stuff. They can eat a large variety of different kinds of food as they are omnivores. ; )

  • my girly rat responded to her name but i never trained her, i bet sometimes they just know how :)

  • When I make clicky noises at my rat, she just makes them back at me by clicking her teeth together.

    Smartass rat... :]

  • @GodsentHellraiser

    HAHA how cute. Great personality.

  • I really enjoyed watching your movies and my rats are also happy with it. Thanks for taking your time to make these~

  • No problem. XD

  • I have a rat that just falls asleep when I try to do anything with her. She is my favorite, but she acts like a male rat. Sometimes she gets out of the cage when I show that I have food but then she becomes disinerested no matter what and will just look for a place to fall asleep. Do you think there might be something wrong with her?

  • Does she have a good appatite?

  • Heyy i love your rat it is so smart but this morning i try to get my 1 year old rat to come when i made a noise and when she did i gave her a treat but after 5 mins she wouldnt come anymore and it is really hard for her to pay attention what should i do?

  • Perhaps she was too buissy scoffing here treat or perhaps she isn't confident outside the cage?

  • Wow these are awesome, I am trying to train my rats too !!! :-) lol I have noticed that they seem to have taken an interest in strawberry's for the treats, hahaha and my cloths that they chew on :-D

  • Thanks.

    I hope it works out. ; )

You may find it will take them a while to learn their first trick but the leaning procces gradually speeds up as they are taught more stuff. : )

  • Ya I dont want to rush them.....I think I might try clicker training

  • Thats how I started. Its very useful. ; )

  • really, awesome but I was giving them strawberry's for their treats but they seem to not like them as much as i thought..... I think I might try sugar tablets

  • Will this work with a hamster or gerbil? Thanks dude

  • I think it might though it may take a little longer. ; )

  • These videos are great and your voice is so beautiful, just makes them better. Lovely rats too.

  • Tah! =P

  • hey masterOfThemidgets thnx for bein so helpful wif my rattie questiions :)

how do u tell a rat not to do somthing wifout scolding it?? eg . if my rat runs off somwhere i dnt want it to go coz it might get away or its dangerous. i hav the rat cage in my garage

  • To start you need to pick a word to use like "no" for example. Then every time your rat does something you don't want him to do you say "no" firmly, but not harshly then put him in the cage and lock it. Do this every time he does something you don't like. He will eventually learn that "no" means the end of 'out time'. So finaly if he is in the midle of doing something bad and you say "no" he will change his actions to prevent having to go back into the cage.

He should not be kept in your garage

  • hey i hav anouthr question , do rats like to be patted coz mine seem to not like it and shy away wen i try ??? anywho anyy sugestions :)

  • Is it just the patting that they don't like or being handled in general? Twiglet is incredably energetic and loves to play and be tickled now and then but if I just sit there and pet her she becomes bord and wanders off to find some thing better to do. That may be the case with yours ; )

  • well she sorta ducks and shys away from the patting but shes really friendly , comes up to me and sniffs me and crawls on me . also shes a cheddar look alike "gorgeous" :)

  • Yay! A Cheddar look-a-like =P As long as she is happy to be picked up and held there shouldn't be a problem. If she squirms to get out of your grip just hold her little and often and after a few days or so she should probably relax ; )

  • This videos are really helpful... I have only just got my rat, they are about 12 weeks old when i got them which was only a few days ago. how long shall i wait before training him, and what's the best way to get him used to me? also i'm worried if i let him out of his cage he'll just run away!

  • I find the easyest way to tame them is to simply handle them little and often. They usualy come to trust you after a day or two. After the first couple of weeks you can let them out of their cage. Usually they only take a few steps outside before fleeing back to their beloved home on the first few occasions. After a few more weeks they should eventually be completly happy outside the cage and then you can begin training ; )

  • hey I just got my rats like 3 days ago and yes the older and larger one of the 2, whos name is penny was very comfertable with ppl and being out of the cage immeadiatley after we got her , anyways ive been tryin to train her to come by name and she just runs round the room not evin interested in treats lol , i evin wait like ages for her to finish exploreing and yer shes still not interested . am i doin anythin wrong ? thnx

  • omg i went onto your page, you know instead of going throught the related videos and i just read about chedder! Im so sorry, hows twiglet? btw i got two ratties.. theyre young but thats how the pet shop was selling them.. i couldnt find a good breeder only the snake food kind :( .. but mine are doing considerably well... i think.... they look like yours.. it wasnt done intentionally, they were the sweetest.. i prob just like yours and subconsiously picked them lol anyway, sorry again! xxoo

  • You rescued them before they became snake food? HIGH FIVE GIRL!

Thank you very much by the way. I really apreciate it. Twiglet has been doing alot of pineing. She really isn't enjoying being a single rat. She is desperate for affection and spends alot of her "out time" round me.

  • im getting two rats soon! at the moment they are only 3 weeks old so i have to wait a while but until then ive been watching ur videos religously so i know exactly how to teach them from the get go lol does any one have any advice for me about taking care of them.. like how long should i be handling them before i can teach them the noise thing? and what foods are good for them? like non treat foods? sorry ive never had rats before and i want to be able to take great care of them :)

  • Getting rats for the first time is always exciting! They should be around eight weeks old when you finally get them ; )

They will probably be terrified of you at first (these two were). Just handle them little and often but don't be too gruff. I've had rats that I've been able to tame in a day but I've had others that have taken two weeks. The taming period varies so just be patient. Once they have been tamed alow a couple of weeks before training : )

  • SO, I noticed this in your video, you need to make sure that you are making the sound before you treat them to mark the behavior and bridge the treat, instead of making the sound after you treat them. I don't know if its just because the video sound if off or not. Anyways, cool, thx for sharing

  • Well noted ; )

    And thanks.

  • No problem ; )

  • omg this was so helpful. thank you so much (:

i was so confused earlier about teaching my rat tricks..but this helped me tons! thanks again. Chaz thanks you . haha

  • Master of Midgets, I have a question...

What would happen if I didn't bother with associating a sound with the treats, and simply associated treats with my rat's name?

    I know there's a probably a good reason, I'm just curious.

Thanks so much for the videos!

  • aw, sorry..

  • Don't worry she's doing ok with the right care ; ) I should be making another video soon but it'll just have the Twiglet.

  • is it going better with Chedder?

  • Slow progress. Old age has caught up with her. She has arthritus down her right flank, hip to jaw. : (

  • thanks for helpin out

  • hi, i have a rat and he is over 1 year,

can i teach him trick on his age too?

  • The prosses may be a little slow at first but you probabaly won't have any problems appart from that ; )

  • my rat is over 1 year can i learn him tricks on his age

    too?

  • Hey, i love your videos!

Great quality work :) im a new rat owner and i love playing with rats, they are really intelligent creatures.

Love your work lots, 5/5 :D

i have a rat named Remy, he is 5 months old i was wondering is it still possible to train him at this age? or would you need a baby rat?

  • He should still be able to learn tricks at that age. I started training mine around foru months)

Thanks for the lovely comment ; )

  • How do you get your rats to be comfortable outside, and explore. When I have mine outside of their cage free ranging one will jump onto my bed off their cage, and hide under the blankets. Others will climb a table to my boys cage. They don't explore much besides under the desk or around their cage. When I have them outside of their room, they just burry in my shirt, and don't leave.

  • I'll send you a personal message. Haven't got enough room here lol : P

  • hi, i love your videos! and your rats have really cool names!! :-D i have recently bought 2 rats from a breeder. they are so lovley, but the only time they come out of their cage is when i am holding onto to them,When i do get them out though i make sure that the room is safe for them, for example i make sure the door is closed, just incase anything happend. i was wandering if the best way to let them out of thier cage (apart from me carrying them) is to let them come out at thier own accord?

  • Hay thankyou ; )

Well firsty they need to be compleatly tame (but I presume thats all ok) If they are then just simply let them come out on their owne accord. Just be paitient. Some rats will bound out confidently while others take about an hour simply contenplating over the prospect of "actually" leaving the cage lol : P After a week or so they will become more confident.

  • Thank you so much! :-D They are very tame. one (del boy) is more dosile than the other (Rodney) not that rodney bites or anything he is just a bit more livley. Will they go back into their cage without too much hassel? Thanks again x

  • When they first go out they will probbly only take a few paces before fleeing back to their precious cage so you won't have a problem there. When they get more confident you will just have to round them up. (Thats when training them to come by name is useful lol!) Anyway as they are tame they shouldn't have a problem with being picked up ; )

  • Thank you so much :-D you have been a great help, i'm really greatful! and i cant wait to see more vids of ur gorgeous little rats! thanks again :D

  • No problem. It will be a while before my next vid though cause my laptop died a death. But more will come ; )

  • Love the videos. We just got two 4-month old rats and are looking forward to teaching them tricks.

  • Oh good luck ; )

  • My rat tends to pee all over the place (as well as poo) when I let her out of the cage, how can I get her to stop?

  • You can toilet train rats to poop in one place but aparently that does not stop them from peeing all over the place-BUT I recon that if you plonk her back in the cage every time she piddles she will learn that peeing will be the end of "out time" so perhaps after a couple of weeks or so will stop all together. I've never had that problem with any of my rats (I guess I'm just lucky) but I think this may work.

  • ok you seem to know a lot about rats. i just got my first rat about 3 weeks ago and i have noticed he sneezes a lot! i let him run around my room and he acts fine just like a normal rat, but his sneezing. is this normal? and if its not do you know how to stop it? thanks in advance. :]

  • It may have something to do with the beding. Is it dust free? Rats are alergic to dust and that could be why he is sneezing.

  • I have two wonderful rats. They are only babies and yet they listen to me and love to run around my room playing. Cute ratties!

  • They are a dorable at that age-they are miniscule! XP But I recon they've grown quite a bit since you sent this lol!

  • good video. =)

  • Thankyou! How are you and your ratties by the way?

  • fine and dandy. =)

  • I think i'm over feeding my new pet rat cuz everytime i try to give him treats he and wont take them, i think he probally isn't hungry but i dont know how much to feed him, i've never had a rat b4 ... any advise?

  • A rat will take a treat whether he is hungry or not because they are foraging type animals. Your rat may simlpy not like the treat. Another reason my be (this is if you are giving him the treats outside the cage) he isn't used to your room so doesn't feel safe enough to lower his head to eat or take a treat. If you think this is the case give him more time to get used to his suroundings.

  • thanks this helped a lot

    you have a cool accent

  • Lol thanks. I gess my accent is kinda posh and half the time I don't know if I hate it or not.

  • Nice one, and very helpful.

It was cute the way both your rats scrambled onto the DVD case. :)

  • Lol! You noticed that? I gess they did that because it was the closest they could get to me : P

  • Damn, your Ratties listen extremely well.

It's still going to take time for Ikarus (My Rattie) to get used to being out of her cage. But hopefully I can get her to the point where yours are. Great video, thanks.

  • Lol they do. Don't worry it will take a while before she is ready for training. Thanks for the comment : )
