I'm glad Foreman had the sense not to hit him while he was down at 4:30. Frazier got badly beaten but wouldn't quit, you don't see much of that nowadays. Any one of those landed punches would have seriously hurt a normal person, but Frazier kept getting back up. Unreal.
Just so you guys know...Frazier fought his whole professional career with his right eye blind..that just shows his passion for boxing besides the other boxers who just looking for show biz money lol
Frazier didn't have a chance in hell, this is a brutal example of a taller Boxer destroying the shorter Boxer. Foreman had a wonderful jab, he should have invested in it a little more. I notice whenever Frazier tried 2 get inside, Foreman would just double hand shove him back out, if Tommy Hearns employed such a technique 2 accompany his sick speed, stiff jab ripping left cross & his right hand straight head cracker when he was Boxing he would have never been beaten.
This is what happened when frazier finally stepped into the ring with a big puncher. The one and only puncher frazier would ever fight and it resulted in him being stopped and dropped six times in two rounds, lol.Frazier never had the sack to get in there with the likes of mac foster, ron lyle, earnie shavers or sonny liston, but atleast we'll always have this little gem.
Thanks bro, nice to see see there are some still some true, knowledgeable boxing fans about.Thing is,what happened here to Frazier could have happened even earlier had he actually stepped up into the ring with a big puncher.Shavers,Lyle,Mac Foster,Liston - oddly enough,Frazier never fought any of them...and only fought Foreman when he was forced into doing or otherwise face having his title stripped.
@tapiaassasin - Yes, what we are seeing is a natural cruiserweight trying to swarm a very big punching heavyweight. Joe Frazier's reputation for punching power and punch resistance came against guys who were big hitters for cruiserweights, not heavyweights.
Frazier was better than Ali the 1st fight, but dam Foreman whooped Fraizer in the 2nd round. and then he lost the title agaisnt Ali.. in this sport no one knows what can happen..
but these guys are legends, Foreman, Ali, Fraizer, Norton
Il montante destro che ha provocato il secondo kd credo che avrebbe abbattuto un toro...Foreman, il più grande picchiatore mai esistito, l'unico suo difetto è stata la farsa di Kinshasa.....
I agree Foreman had the power and length to beat Tyson. Iron Mike can't take a good punch, although he was a great puncher & boxer early on. Big George woulda had Mike crying by the 4th round. George could also take a punch.
Former heavyweight world champion Joe Frazier was arrested in February 2004 after police responded to a 911 domestic violence call from his North Philadelphia home. When police arrived a woman, the mother of Frazier's son, answered the door. She told the police that Frazier had hit her and there were injuries to her face to back up the claim. The charges were later dropped, after the woman refused to testify against Frazier
@jabb69 I disagree, mike tyson would have never let George forman hit him the tail of his punch.. mike tyson would have attacked more in the inside plus because the speed and power he had...
foreman was the greatest big puncher in the history of heavyweights, mike tyson would have met the same fate as joe if they were to be in the same era---RIP joe, I luv ya!
No offense to Frazier but I am not surprised he lost this match. With the way he kept ducking he wasn't doing anything but setting himself up for uppercuts which Foreman took advantage of. You can't keep doing the same thing over and over and not think your opponent won't catch on.

Joe Frazier died. I saw this match real time on TV. Frazier had defeated Ali and I didn't know Foreman. So I expected Joe would win in short time but Foreman knocked down champ again and again. This is the greatest fight in history I think. Tyson vs Baster Douglous was also good.
People look at this and say the ref should have stopped it eariler or Frazier corner should have thrown in the towel....But the fact was EVERYONE was in SHOCK! Even Frazier son thought Joe was just playing when he went down the first three times. Frazier was undefeated and considered invincible at the time. Watching him be so mercilessly manhandled was beyond anyones comprehension at the moment. Thats why it went on so long.
As I write this Joe Frazier lies dying of cancer in a hospice. I'm sure that he is showing as much courage now as he did when fighting Foreman -- valiantly getting up off the canvas over and over to take the worst beating of his life in the ring.
Amazing the chemistry of boxing... Frazier dishes Ali one of his hardest fights ever, yet Foreman knocks out Frazier easily, knocked him down six times might I add- and finally then we've got Ali beating Foreman with the rope a dope. What the hell? Chemistry is something in boxing, I miss the good old 60/70s boxing when guys could be knocked down and not be immediately looked at by the doctor, cripes.
Oh, and I left out Ernie Shavers; Joe for whatever reason, managed not to fight him either. Except for the just returned from exile Ali, Joe's career simply lacks victories over the best fighters of his generation; his greatest victories (other than ring rusty Ali) are over second tier heavies, Jimmy Ellis and Jerry Quarry, err, not the credentials of a great champion.
Looking at Joe's career, its obvious (IMO) that he is a bit over rated for 1) all the hell he managed to give Ali because Ali was no heavy puncher, and 2) (unlike Ali)he never fought everybody of his generation, namely Sonny Liston (who Big George is likened to), & Cleaveland Williams of the 1960s; or Jimmy Young & Ken Norton of the 70s. I'd call Joe great if he would have fought & had wins against these fighters he missed. As it stands he beat no top tier opponent but the ring rusty Ali of 71.
@aitraining Yeah, and Sonny Liston, like big George, was custom built to knock Fraziers head off too; & Ernie Shavers may have done it too...Powerful punchers, bigger than Frazier, with knockout power in both hands (compared to Joe's one hand) who hit harder than Joe, and had greater reach, were custom built to knock his block off...and believe me, short armed, one handed, never retreating, always getting close, sticking-his-head-out-in- front-of-you-Joe, would have been a piece of cake again.
Frazier usually got killed by big punchers. George Foreman ate him up twice within 2 rounds. Tyson (who I don't like) may have crushed Joe too. Similar styles with less power usually equalls KO.....and early. Joe never feared Ali's power and was a good match up for Frazier. Thus the "classic" close fights and why he fought him 3 times. They did it for Money too :)
@aitraining 'usually got killed big punchers' - the only men he lost to where Foreman and Ali, and Foreman was the only man to beat him comprehensively
Foreman should have been DQ'd for constantly shoving Frazier back, followed by holding Frazier's head with his left glove so he tee-off with his right.
curious, is all that pushing off by foreman legal? every time frazier tried to get inside foreman pushed him away to take advantage of his reach, and just pummeled frazier, joe couldn't even reach him, he would lurch with the left when he could but foreman almost used a "stiff-arm" on him the whole time.
@tomitstube Yeah I had a very upright style of boxing and like to push off people when they get close and bob and weave but always got told off for that
@ne12na12tour i think that more impressive is the fact that Ali beat Foreman, it's not that joe wasn't good it's just that foreman was a mean machine, i don't think that there were many like George with that amount of punching power. Ali, old and way after his prime, took a beating for 15 round and stayed on his feet to knock him down, now that's impressive.
@nomorephones forman is a great fighter.but he can not defeat ali.its not impressive that ali won the fight, because he is a better fighter he was smart fast and strong he throw alot of punishing on forman head.he said i stay on the rope for a reason listen for what he have said after the fight he have said a wonderful points about the reason that make him stay on the ropes and why forman can't hurt him when he was on the ropes.he did that to let forman get tired, then he ko him with no difficulty
@ne12na12tour Yeah i know that story, yet, i believe that if foreman would have played it a bit smarter and from the 10th round and on he would have went back, then he would have won the fight easily with points. ali did outsmart him, by staying on the ropes. still, watch the fight again and tell me that those blows by foreman didn't do any damage, that's absurd. if only foreman would have played it a bit more safe, then this fight would have been his with ease.
@nomorephones Dude, I am utterly amazed that you are imaginative enough to fathom up a scenario where George could change his stripes, gain boxing ability enough, and intelligence enough, to outpoint the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, Ali, in a 15 round decision...are you for real? Dude, not even the older, mature, smarter George, who regained a title in the 90s, ever had the boxing ability to outpoint Ali; his only shot, though in retrospect, a slim one, was to try and knock Ali out.
Frazier came close to landing some powerful left hooks in the first; if he had, the outcome might have been different. But the referee was letting Foremen get away with some blatant shoving that kept Frazier at a distance.
@TenTonHorse Yes it is. Referees will usually warn a fighter about it and can eventually take a point away; this ref warned Foreman once I think, but let it go the rest of the time.
@TenTonHorse You're right, and it always bothered me. Of course it's one of those things that the referee has discretion about, and a certain amount of pushing always happens, I just thought Foreman was extreme. And he was so strong that he could send the other guy half way across the ring (slight exaggeration) when he wanted to. Poor Frazier couldn't get close.
@counterstriving Well, he was probably the strongest heavyweight ever - very strong boned - and he made it a strangely effective move. Maybe that's why his jab was technically his best punch; to compensate if ever the authorities began to punish him. Just a guess.
@counterstriving. George admitted this. He held his shoulder with his left-hand and threw a punch many times. He was so scared of Joe. He knew he had to knock out him early because he started slowly. George was smart like a bad guy wrestler, but Arthur Mercante didn't mind pushing and shoving as long as you did it in short jabs but he didn't like holding.
omg to even pretend to compare tyson's power to foreman is an insult to foreman. pound for pound tyson's powere was impressive but foreman with the height and weight behind those thunderbolt hooks and uppercuts was a thing of beauty. Hands down foreman was the most powerful heawyweight in boxing history. If he would have had the stamina to match that power he would have been the greatest of all time. Certainly Ali respected his power and exploited his stamina and gave him no rematch
@bobber0623 -In his prime, Foreman would decapitate, annihilate and humiliate Tyson, on Tyson's best day. Foreman had extreme power and reach, combined with psychosis. As he aged, his temper became controllable and he was able to leverage his awesome power to get the title. Foreman is worth over $250 million dollars, when most former boxers are broke, brain damaged or dead.
@bobber0623 Right! RIng magazine ranks Foreman and Shavers (Ali victims) as top ten most powerful punchers, & Mike Tyson at 16; Mike's punching power couldn't match Big George's- the young generation don't know or refuse to believe it.LaterGeorge got both stamina and ring wisdom, which had he had at an earlier age, he would have a chance of detroning Ali as the greatest Heavy of all time. Damn! can you imagine Big George with wisdom, stamina and youth? Oh- George didn't ask for an Ali rematch.
@MidCityOne Joe Frazier was one of the fiercest fighters to ever step into the ring. I figure by your comment, you are either young and know nothing about the history of boxing, or just ignorant.
@rickosuave29 Frazier was not a "bum" but he was overmatched here and besides having the right style against Ali, was a fairly unremarkable heavyweight. Not a bum but overrated - yes.
@aitraining R U crazy? u meant to tell me u think the only reason he beat Ali was cuz he had the right style? what about his ability to take punches? what about being tough? what about stamina, being able to go from Bell to Bell? those things have nothing to do with style, they have to do with conditioning, and Heart, and Joe had a ton of them. Stop judging Joe by the Foreman fights, and take the time to learn the whole career of the man.
@rickosuave29 Yes. - that was part of it. style was huge in those fights. Style makes fights. They were perfect for classic 15 round fights. Joe Frazier was a very good fighter, but the facts are he did not have a long run as champion, and he was a good match up in the Ali fights style wise - which is why Ali had a hard time with him. When Joe fought big hard punchers who were bigger like Foreman - who toyed with him like a child, he got killed. Not sure what ur problem is with any of that.
@aitraining My problem with what you're saying is that u are ignorant of the career of Joe Frazier, do your homework. you keep reffering to the Foreman fight, n Ali fights, r those the only opponents you've watched Joe fight? if so, u have a lot to learn, Frazier fought 37 fights and lost 4.... 2 to Ali, and 2 to Foreman. so besides Foreman (one of the Hardest punchers that ever lived) what big punchers killed him? U have no knowlege of the man's career n u're commenting.
@rickosuave29 Dude - I like Frazier, but the fact is the 2 guys who pop into your mind when you think of him r Ali and Foreman. I'm well aware of Frazier. His fights and his career, but in the end - if u look at his record, besides Ali, it ain't that good against the great fighters of his era. Boxing records are bloated, so don't pitch 37-4. Ali lost 5 fights. What does that matter. Most of these guys fought bums in their first 25 fights, Frazier was good but not immortal. sorry my opinion
@rickosuave29 I'm not igornat to Frazier's career and I will refrain from mentioning Foreman beating him here again. 37-4 record means nothing. u know that. Ali lost 5 fights too (and should have lost a few more imo but he got by a few times on split dec's). All these guys fight bums in there first 20 fights to bloat up their record so that means nothing. Again - i liked Frazier, but his career was not dominant over the great fighters of his era. It's just a fact.
@rickosuave29 He's butchered twice & it should be minimized? & only judged by his victories? No; It all counts, & his career in totality proves he's subject to terrible beatings at the hands of bigger punchers,or bigger men;His whole career proves this. 2 losses to Ali, and 2 to George; the two best heavies he faced; in light of this it's more than likely, because of Joes STYLE, he would have got his head knocked off by both Sonny Liston & Tyson had he fought them. Dream match: Joe v Sonny!
@MrPerryrice You might be right, but how do u know? he never fought Sonny Liston, Frazier Beat Ali, and Ali whipped Sonny Liston's ass. How can u be so sure that Frazier's bobing and weaving wouldn't be enough to get past Sonny's jab? All Joe needed was 1 good left hook to the jaw to floor an opponent, and he could make your internal organs bleed, for weeks if he hit u in the body. Frazier was Great, you can't count him out, just because he was Taylor made for Foreman.
@rickosuave29 Can't know for sure, just basing it on the common observation that Liston was a better Boxer than Foreman, & that Frazier was never that hard to hit, if he couln't bob and weave past Foreman, it's even more unlikely for him to get past Liston who destroyed bobbers and weavers, not just sluggers (ie: Patterson). Plus Joe was hit by Quarry, and many others brutally; Frazier was just a more powerful puncher than them, whereas Liston and Tyson: bigger & bang harder than Joe.
I would have Loved to See Tyson vs Larry Holmes(the real larry holmes lol) Tyson vs Sonny Liston(who was much like Tyson, they were both real tough when they were crushing the guy) Love to see Tyson v Foreman, Tyson v Frazier(because of Frazier coming forward, I'd say Tyson has the advantage in the early rounds against Frazier, but if Joe lasted to round 5, he'd wear Mike down) Tyson v Ali( Ali would dance, and wear him down no doubt) Tyson v Louis, Tyson v Marciano, can u imagine that??? wow!!
now Better you have got to admit, that Tyson did face a lot of bums and fighters past their primes, I Love Tyson's exciting abilities, as much as you, but as athletic, and skilled as he was, he lacked heart
@rickosuave29 I think Tyson had plenty of heart, and he did go the distance with Tillis and Green, who weren't bums. By the time Tyson lost to "real fighters," he was not the same. He also showed tremendous heart against Douglas, as he was getting pummelled and did come back for the long-count 9 that should have won in the 8th.
@BettorOffSingle Tyson was a master at scaring his opponents, the man said things like "my goal was to hit him in his nose and send it up into his brain" " I want to eat his kids" "I'll fuck you till you love me, you punk ass white boy" he had his opponents beat before they got in the ring, they were paralyzed with fear. and his quick hands, and power can not be denied, but I'd take Frazier, Forman, or Ali against Tyson any day, because it takes Heart to win an olympic gold Medal :)
@BettorOffSingle also remember, Tyson was adopted by 1 of the Greatest trainers, boxing was the most positive thing Tyson had ever done, so it became his and Cus damato's life to make him great. He became a great technical boxer, however emotionally, the man was weak, he lacked character, because he was a street thug. That lacking of Character was obvious in the Hollyfield earbiting fight, George Forman was a street guy too, but he was more physically gifted n had more character than Tyson.
@BettorOffSingle Tyson didn't have character, anyone who beats, n rapes women doesn't have character, thats y his career went down hill, not bcuz of talent. I'm enjoying writing you, hopefully lets keep debating. I can't wait to see Mayweather back in action against Ortiz, David Haye talked all that trash and got whooped, but Vlad didn't deliver on his prediction that he'd knock Haye Out. I can't wait for Pacquiao, Marquez, it'll probably be a sleeper, but i enjoy watching Manny box.
The above fight is exactly what would have happened if Tyson had met the older Foreman, and Cus d'Amato knew it. He warned "Iron Mike" to avoid George at all costs.
It is also what would have happened if Tyson had met Vitali Klitschko, at any stage in their careers. Klitschko's style would have killed Tyson, utterly demoralised him.
Truth is, Tyson entirely lacked the inner strength and resource of a true boxing champion. To say he was the best ever - even for one day - is an insult to boxing.
@roquefort88888 I disagree. Until around 1988, any of the fighters you named would have proven Tyson's relatively simple claim: EVERYONE HAS A PLAN UNTIL THEY GET HIT.
Did any OTHER fighters slaughter Bruno or Michael Spinks in Round 1 with punches that are STILL shaking the arenas in which they were thrown? These were guys who had never even been knocked DOWN, let alone out, and they were at full strength when stopped c old.
Foreman in 1987 was too SLOW to get near Tyson. Tyson just stopped being Tyson beginning with the Douglas fight. People forget that for FIVE YEARS Tyson chewed up and spit out literally everything put in his path.
Foreman had one lucky punch in 1996 to win the title. Going the distance with Holyfield meant nothing, as he was never a real threat to win that fight.
Mate, plenty of boxers go undefeated till age 22, and many go way beyond that.
If a fighter is washed up after losing his first fight at the age of 23, then you know he was never a true champion in the first place. At the first sign of adversity Tyson crumbled, like the whiny-voiced, angry little kid-in-a-man's-body which he was.
@BettorOffSingle Yep, I agree, A sort of rewriting of boxing history has taken place....sorry he was awesome plus excellent defensive skills, its true after Douglas he went into decline, witness the struggle with Ruddock in 91, yet if he had fought Ruddock in Nov 1989 as he was due too, i don't doubt for a second he would have gone the same way as Bruno and Williams did, the guy never lost a round to a prime Bruno, a fighter who led Wtherspoon after 8 rounds, and Lewis after 6....
@BettorOffSingle Tyson didn't "stop being Tyson." That's just how Tyson fans reassure themselves that he couldn't be beat: because if someone did beat him after 1989 it wasn't the "real Tyson" anyway so it doesn't count.
Every fighter goes through better and worse phases of their careers for a variety of reasons. I know all about Cus D'amato etc., but any fighter who's that dependent on one particular trainer is inadequate to begin with. It was up to Tyson to remember what he'd learned.
@counterstriving You are simultaneously both Wrong & Right. In regards to people reassuring themselves, Tyson's losses DID/DO count, BUT. he was NOT the same fighter after...well...even a while BEFORE Douglas. The loss of Cuss, the sudden fame, $, belt and lifestyle made, destroyed his training/work ethic. It's not so much that he was "lazy" as it is that he just wasn't "hungry" anymore. By the time he regained some of that old hunger (bankruptcy can do that), he no longer had the chops.
@gjc82071 Fair enough, what you say makes sense. I just get tired of people saying that Douglas, Holyfield and Lewis didn't beat the "real Tyson." For one thing, in between losing to those guys, Tyson was winning his other fights, against good fighters, mostly by knockout; and yet he lost convincingly to those 3, so you have to give them credit. For some reason a lot of Tyson fans are mad at Douglas especially, he's a bum etc.
@counterstriving You are right, but/and, we can also argue that Holyfield who beat Tyson, was NOT the same fighter HE was 5 years ago either! Neither man was in his "prime". So it all evens out. Personally/IMO, I do not know if Tyson would have EVER beat Holyfield. As for Lewis, MAYBE if Mike was younger/faster, better trained, and @ that time Lewis lacked the experience, Tyson by KO. As for Douglas, well, it is clear the Tyson did NOT train for a 40 to 1 underdog. If he HAD trained..."?"
@gjc82071 Yes I'm sure Tyson wasn't too worried about Douglas going in and didn't train as hard as he might have; but on the other hand he wasn't overweight, he was in good shape, and stamina wasn't his problem in the fight. Also I don't know what you meant when you said he had gone downhill for a while before the Douglas fight, since in the two years prior he had fought five times against significant opposition, winning them all by early knockout.
Well,to all u boxing fans, firstly styles make boxing,Ali is in my mind the Greatest heavyweight in history,u do not have to just have power, like Sony Liston, foreman or Frazier,u also need speed, art, tecknique etc,I am sure u all will agree, even after Ali losing 3 years of his PRIME boxing years,he came out and wooped Foreman who was then considered unbeatable!Rocky Marciano was strong but he was a small guy weing only 190lbs,and in his time believe me there were No great boxers,he only fought
@danceswithwolvesful How can you say Fraizer is in top ten of all time ? Fraizer beat a rusty Ali, but he later lost twice to Foreman and Ali, he never fought the other good fighters at that time like Norton, Shavers, Lyle or Young.
@knockup100 He stopped a lot of tough guys such as Chuvalo and Quarry, and his fights with Ali were legendary. I agree this isnt enough for a top 10 position, but sometimes you can judge someone based on a small number of good fights. For example Tyson didnt really beat anyone great, but considering the unique skill he showed I think its fair to put him in the top 10. The same goes for Frazier, because apart from Marciano I couldnt think of a more relentless heavyweight. Just my 2 cents.
@BettorOffSingle Tyson was the best at beating up average boxers in brutal fashion. But i dont believe that a trainer can prevent one from being average. And punchpower does certainly not suddenly disappear.
"Best ever? Tyson from 1985-1988. People FEARED him. After Cus died, it was all over for him."
-
Well seeing how Cus died in 1985, you're essentially saying Tyson was the greatest of all time - from 1985 to 1985. This is typical of the illogical nonsense I hear from Tyson nuthuggers.
Tyson was a clown. He could mercilessly beat guys who didn't put up a fight. But as soon as someone actually stood up to him, like Buster Douglas or Holyfield, he crumbled. He had no Plan B.
@roquefort88888 No contrqadiction. Cus was so great it took five years for Tyson to fully collapse after he died. It also took Buster Douglas having one of the best nights of all time in the ring. Then prison and Don King destroyed him.
All American moments. When boxing had glory and honor. Compare this fight to the recent fraudulant fight between Shane Mosley vs Pacq. Mosely wasint fighting! A fake fight.
I watched this fight on channel 7, on ABC, it was for free back then. Howard Cosell called the fight. "Frazier, goes down, Frazier goes down!",he said. Foreman literally knocked Frazier off his feet. I thought Foreman was invincible after this fight. And Ali knocked him out in 1974..The biggest upset in boxing history .
Joe Frazier was a bloody piece of bait to George Foreman here. Tailor made for big George. You can't swap with Foreman and be 6 inches smaller....... Good night
@WhiteSlift It wasn't broadcasted on ESPN live. ESPN was not around then as you said. They are owned by ABC/Disney and they own ESPN classics. I assume it is from that library.
Ali was a great match up for Joe, because Ali didn't have the power Forman did to knock Joe out, and Joe could take so many shots that he was able to get on the inside to work Ali's body, wearing him down. so their fights just went on and on and on. However Joe Frazier using his style would never beat George Foreman, Frazier was made for Forman.
@BettorOffSingle My man, thx 4 your comment, 1st of all, He never knocked Sonny out, 1st fight he cut sonny's face up, and made him hurt his shoulder from swinging and missing, and in Round 8 sonny refused to come out of the corner, the 2nd fight Sonny took a dive, do u really believe he couldn't have gotten up? 3rd you r dissing Joe Frazier, to say compared to Liston he wasn't difficult to beat. Joe Frazier pushed Ali to a limit that no other fighter did. (maybe Ken Norton) Give Joe Credit.
@rickosuave29 Regarding Ali-Liston 2: as you may know, Liston DID get up, and while ref Walcott, who'd been distracted by trying to get Ali to stop running around, etc., went over to check with the timekeeper, they actually started to fight again, but then Walcott came over and called the fight over (Liston had in fact been down for more than 10 sec.)
@BettorOffSingle ofcourse you know I'm not talking about when Ali got old, I'm talking about when he was close to and in his prime. I know Ali could hit really hard, but fact of the matter is, he hit Joe a million times in 3 different fights, and couldn't knock him out. Joe Frazier was a warrior, and deserves credit, just like Ali deserves credit, give these men credit for their hard work. Joe went toe to toe with The Greatest, and took him to the limit especially in Manilla.
@rickosuave29 The 1970s was boxing's greatest era as far as I'm concerned, but I still say Tyson's era looked weak mostly because Tyson made them look weak. Bruno, Spinks, and lots of the guys he crushed were not THAT bad, just bad compared to Tyson, and still, Mike knocked them out 90 seconds into the fight. It's not like he could have done more.
Even Foreman or Ali would have had to avoid those explosions in their prime. Maybe they would havem, maybe not. That's the fun of debate!
@BettorOffSingle people say the 70's, ofcourse because Ali made boxing explode, but I'm not so sure that it was, as far as having the tougher boxers, I think guys like Rocky Marciano,Joe Louis, Archie Moore, didn't do nearly as much for boxing as Ali did, but maybe they had more great fighters in that era, u take a guy like Sugar Ray Robinson, who I think pound for pound was the best ever. the man had more knockouts than Ali had professional fights. Then boxing changed it became more commercial.
@rickosuave29 Pound for pound, I think a great case could be made for ROBERTO DURAN as the best ever. He also moved up three weight classes before he got stopped by Leonard, and he was a bit older at the time.
Boxing has always been very commercial. Louis was great, and so was Marciano, but I still see Tyson as on their level or above, at least through 1988. Tyson got BORED with the division as much as he was ruined by others.
@BettorOffSingle The 70's was certainly the biggest era for boxing as a turning point, in which it became a sport in which people like Floyd Mayweather could make hundreds of Millions, all thanks to Ali, however I think more great boxers may have come out of the 40's and 50's, I'm not sure I'm still trying to figure that out for myself, but the experts do agree with you, that the 70's was the Greatest era.
I'm glad Foreman had the sense not to hit him while he was down at 4:30. Frazier got badly beaten but wouldn't quit, you don't see much of that nowadays. Any one of those landed punches would have seriously hurt a normal person, but Frazier kept getting back up. Unreal.

Thanks bro, nice to see see there are some still some true, knowledgeable boxing fans about.Thing is,what happened here to Frazier could have happened even earlier had he actually stepped up into the ring with a big puncher.Shavers,Lyle,Mac Foster,Liston - oddly enough,Frazier never fought any of them...and only fought Foreman when he was forced into doing or otherwise face having his title stripped.
tapiaassasin 1 month ago
@tapiaassasin - Yes, what we are seeing is a natural cruiserweight trying to swarm a very big punching heavyweight. Joe Frazier's reputation for punching power and punch resistance came against guys who were big hitters for cruiserweights, not heavyweights.

Frazier was better than Ali the 1st fight, but dam Foreman whooped Fraizer in the 2nd round. and then he lost the title agaisnt Ali.. in this sport no one knows what can happen..

MrPerryrice 3 months ago
Looking at Joe's career, its obvious (IMO) that he is a bit over rated for 1) all the hell he managed to give Ali because Ali was no heavy puncher, and 2) (unlike Ali)he never fought everybody of his generation, namely Sonny Liston (who Big George is likened to), & Cleaveland Williams of the 1960s; or Jimmy Young & Ken Norton of the 70s. I'd call Joe great if he would have fought & had wins against these fighters he missed. As it stands he beat no top tier opponent but the ring rusty Ali of 71.
MrPerryrice 3 months ago
sad that frazier's corner did not throw the towel in to protect him. Two great fighters tho.

Big George LOVED fighting Joe Frazier. Piece a cake :)
aitraining 4 months ago
@aitraining Yeah, and Sonny Liston, like big George, was custom built to knock Fraziers head off too; & Ernie Shavers may have done it too...Powerful punchers, bigger than Frazier, with knockout power in both hands (compared to Joe's one hand) who hit harder than Joe, and had greater reach, were custom built to knock his block off...and believe me, short armed, one handed, never retreating, always getting close, sticking-his-head-out-in- front-of-you-Joe, would have been a piece of cake again.
MrPerryrice 3 months ago
Frazier usually got killed by big punchers. George Foreman ate him up twice within 2 rounds. Tyson (who I don't like) may have crushed Joe too. Similar styles with less power usually equalls KO.....and early. Joe never feared Ali's power and was a good match up for Frazier. Thus the "classic" close fights and why he fought him 3 times. They did it for Money too :)

ne12na12tour 5 months ago
@ne12na12tour i think that more impressive is the fact that Ali beat Foreman, it's not that joe wasn't good it's just that foreman was a mean machine, i don't think that there were many like George with that amount of punching power. Ali, old and way after his prime, took a beating for 15 round and stayed on his feet to knock him down, now that's impressive.
nomorephones 4 months ago
@nomorephones forman is a great fighter.but he can not defeat ali.its not impressive that ali won the fight, because he is a better fighter he was smart fast and strong he throw alot of punishing on forman head.he said i stay on the rope for a reason listen for what he have said after the fight he have said a wonderful points about the reason that make him stay on the ropes and why forman can't hurt him when he was on the ropes.he did that to let forman get tired, then he ko him with no difficulty
ne12na12tour 4 months ago
@ne12na12tour Yeah i know that story, yet, i believe that if foreman would have played it a bit smarter and from the 10th round and on he would have went back, then he would have won the fight easily with points. ali did outsmart him, by staying on the ropes. still, watch the fight again and tell me that those blows by foreman didn't do any damage, that's absurd. if only foreman would have played it a bit more safe, then this fight would have been his with ease.
nomorephones 4 months ago
@nomorephones Dude, I am utterly amazed that you are imaginative enough to fathom up a scenario where George could change his stripes, gain boxing ability enough, and intelligence enough, to outpoint the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, Ali, in a 15 round decision...are you for real? Dude, not even the older, mature, smarter George, who regained a title in the 90s, ever had the boxing ability to outpoint Ali; his only shot, though in retrospect, a slim one, was to try and knock Ali out.
MrPerryrice 3 months ago
@MrPerryrice well then, i guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

counterstriving 5 months ago
@SOLOVIEV2000 You're right. I did think though that Frazier made some good adjustments for their second fight, but obviously it wasn't enough.
counterstriving 5 months ago
Frazier came close to landing some powerful left hooks in the first; if he had, the outcome might have been different. But the referee was letting Foremen get away with some blatant shoving that kept Frazier at a distance.
counterstriving 5 months ago
@counterstriving Is that illegal in boxing?
TenTonHorse 5 months ago
@TenTonHorse Yes it is. Referees will usually warn a fighter about it and can eventually take a point away; this ref warned Foreman once I think, but let it go the rest of the time.
counterstriving 5 months ago
@counterstriving Wow, thanks for replying. That was actually a trademark of Foreman's.
TenTonHorse 5 months ago
@TenTonHorse You're right, and it always bothered me. Of course it's one of those things that the referee has discretion about, and a certain amount of pushing always happens, I just thought Foreman was extreme. And he was so strong that he could send the other guy half way across the ring (slight exaggeration) when he wanted to. Poor Frazier couldn't get close.
counterstriving 5 months ago
@counterstriving Well, he was probably the strongest heavyweight ever - very strong boned - and he made it a strangely effective move. Maybe that's why his jab was technically his best punch; to compensate if ever the authorities began to punish him. Just a guess.
TenTonHorse 5 months ago
@counterstriving. George admitted this. He held his shoulder with his left-hand and threw a punch many times. He was so scared of Joe. He knew he had to knock out him early because he started slowly. George was smart like a bad guy wrestler, but Arthur Mercante didn't mind pushing and shoving as long as you did it in short jabs but he didn't like holding.

This is when boxing was actually exciting!
MKitson 5 months ago
omg to even pretend to compare tyson's power to foreman is an insult to foreman. pound for pound tyson's powere was impressive but foreman with the height and weight behind those thunderbolt hooks and uppercuts was a thing of beauty. Hands down foreman was the most powerful heawyweight in boxing history. If he would have had the stamina to match that power he would have been the greatest of all time. Certainly Ali respected his power and exploited his stamina and gave him no rematch
bobber0623 5 months ago
@bobber0623 -In his prime, Foreman would decapitate, annihilate and humiliate Tyson, on Tyson's best day. Foreman had extreme power and reach, combined with psychosis. As he aged, his temper became controllable and he was able to leverage his awesome power to get the title. Foreman is worth over $250 million dollars, when most former boxers are broke, brain damaged or dead.
Buckeyecat2002 5 months ago
@Buckeyecat2002 I agree. Foreman ate up little power guys. A 1972 Foreman would eventually have KO'd 1986 Tyson.....probbaly wouldn't b pretty
aitraining 4 months ago
@bobber0623 Right! RIng magazine ranks Foreman and Shavers (Ali victims) as top ten most powerful punchers, & Mike Tyson at 16; Mike's punching power couldn't match Big George's- the young generation don't know or refuse to believe it.LaterGeorge got both stamina and ring wisdom, which had he had at an earlier age, he would have a chance of detroning Ali as the greatest Heavy of all time. Damn! can you imagine Big George with wisdom, stamina and youth? Oh- George didn't ask for an Ali rematch.

rickosuave29 5 months ago 3
@rickosuave29 Frazier was not a "bum" but he was overmatched here and besides having the right style against Ali, was a fairly unremarkable heavyweight. Not a bum but overrated - yes.
aitraining 4 months ago
@aitraining R U crazy? u meant to tell me u think the only reason he beat Ali was cuz he had the right style? what about his ability to take punches? what about being tough? what about stamina, being able to go from Bell to Bell? those things have nothing to do with style, they have to do with conditioning, and Heart, and Joe had a ton of them. Stop judging Joe by the Foreman fights, and take the time to learn the whole career of the man.
rickosuave29 4 months ago
@rickosuave29 Yes. - that was part of it. style was huge in those fights. Style makes fights. They were perfect for classic 15 round fights. Joe Frazier was a very good fighter, but the facts are he did not have a long run as champion, and he was a good match up in the Ali fights style wise - which is why Ali had a hard time with him. When Joe fought big hard punchers who were bigger like Foreman - who toyed with him like a child, he got killed. Not sure what ur problem is with any of that.
aitraining 4 months ago
@aitraining My problem with what you're saying is that u are ignorant of the career of Joe Frazier, do your homework. you keep reffering to the Foreman fight, n Ali fights, r those the only opponents you've watched Joe fight? if so, u have a lot to learn, Frazier fought 37 fights and lost 4.... 2 to Ali, and 2 to Foreman. so besides Foreman (one of the Hardest punchers that ever lived) what big punchers killed him? U have no knowlege of the man's career n u're commenting.
rickosuave29 4 months ago
@rickosuave29 Dude - I like Frazier, but the fact is the 2 guys who pop into your mind when you think of him r Ali and Foreman. I'm well aware of Frazier. His fights and his career, but in the end - if u look at his record, besides Ali, it ain't that good against the great fighters of his era. Boxing records are bloated, so don't pitch 37-4. Ali lost 5 fights. What does that matter. Most of these guys fought bums in their first 25 fights, Frazier was good but not immortal. sorry my opinion
aitraining 4 months ago
@rickosuave29 I'm not igornat to Frazier's career and I will refrain from mentioning Foreman beating him here again. 37-4 record means nothing. u know that. Ali lost 5 fights too (and should have lost a few more imo but he got by a few times on split dec's). All these guys fight bums in there first 20 fights to bloat up their record so that means nothing. Again - i liked Frazier, but his career was not dominant over the great fighters of his era. It's just a fact.
aitraining 4 months ago
@rickosuave29 He's butchered twice & it should be minimized? & only judged by his victories? No; It all counts, & his career in totality proves he's subject to terrible beatings at the hands of bigger punchers,or bigger men;His whole career proves this. 2 losses to Ali, and 2 to George; the two best heavies he faced; in light of this it's more than likely, because of Joes STYLE, he would have got his head knocked off by both Sonny Liston & Tyson had he fought them. Dream match: Joe v Sonny!
MrPerryrice 3 months ago
@MrPerryrice You might be right, but how do u know? he never fought Sonny Liston, Frazier Beat Ali, and Ali whipped Sonny Liston's ass. How can u be so sure that Frazier's bobing and weaving wouldn't be enough to get past Sonny's jab? All Joe needed was 1 good left hook to the jaw to floor an opponent, and he could make your internal organs bleed, for weeks if he hit u in the body. Frazier was Great, you can't count him out, just because he was Taylor made for Foreman.
rickosuave29 3 months ago
@rickosuave29 Can't know for sure, just basing it on the common observation that Liston was a better Boxer than Foreman, & that Frazier was never that hard to hit, if he couln't bob and weave past Foreman, it's even more unlikely for him to get past Liston who destroyed bobbers and weavers, not just sluggers (ie: Patterson). Plus Joe was hit by Quarry, and many others brutally; Frazier was just a more powerful puncher than them, whereas Liston and Tyson: bigger & bang harder than Joe.

rickosuave29 7 months ago
now Better you have got to admit, that Tyson did face a lot of bums and fighters past their primes, I Love Tyson's exciting abilities, as much as you, but as athletic, and skilled as he was, he lacked heart
rickosuave29 7 months ago
@rickosuave29 I think Tyson had plenty of heart, and he did go the distance with Tillis and Green, who weren't bums. By the time Tyson lost to "real fighters," he was not the same. He also showed tremendous heart against Douglas, as he was getting pummelled and did come back for the long-count 9 that should have won in the 8th.
BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle Tyson was a master at scaring his opponents, the man said things like "my goal was to hit him in his nose and send it up into his brain" " I want to eat his kids" "I'll fuck you till you love me, you punk ass white boy" he had his opponents beat before they got in the ring, they were paralyzed with fear. and his quick hands, and power can not be denied, but I'd take Frazier, Forman, or Ali against Tyson any day, because it takes Heart to win an olympic gold Medal :)
rickosuave29 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle also remember, Tyson was adopted by 1 of the Greatest trainers, boxing was the most positive thing Tyson had ever done, so it became his and Cus damato's life to make him great. He became a great technical boxer, however emotionally, the man was weak, he lacked character, because he was a street thug. That lacking of Character was obvious in the Hollyfield earbiting fight, George Forman was a street guy too, but he was more physically gifted n had more character than Tyson.
rickosuave29 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle Tyson didn't have character, anyone who beats, n rapes women doesn't have character, thats y his career went down hill, not bcuz of talent. I'm enjoying writing you, hopefully lets keep debating. I can't wait to see Mayweather back in action against Ortiz, David Haye talked all that trash and got whooped, but Vlad didn't deliver on his prediction that he'd knock Haye Out. I can't wait for Pacquiao, Marquez, it'll probably be a sleeper, but i enjoy watching Manny box.
rickosuave29 7 months ago
The above fight is exactly what would have happened if Tyson had met the older Foreman, and Cus d'Amato knew it. He warned "Iron Mike" to avoid George at all costs.
It is also what would have happened if Tyson had met Vitali Klitschko, at any stage in their careers. Klitschko's style would have killed Tyson, utterly demoralised him.
Truth is, Tyson entirely lacked the inner strength and resource of a true boxing champion. To say he was the best ever - even for one day - is an insult to boxing.
roquefort88888 7 months ago
@roquefort88888 I disagree. Until around 1988, any of the fighters you named would have proven Tyson's relatively simple claim: EVERYONE HAS A PLAN UNTIL THEY GET HIT.
Did any OTHER fighters slaughter Bruno or Michael Spinks in Round 1 with punches that are STILL shaking the arenas in which they were thrown? These were guys who had never even been knocked DOWN, let alone out, and they were at full strength when stopped c old.
Foreman himself said he feared Tyson.
BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
Foreman in 1987 was too SLOW to get near Tyson. Tyson just stopped being Tyson beginning with the Douglas fight. People forget that for FIVE YEARS Tyson chewed up and spit out literally everything put in his path.
Foreman had one lucky punch in 1996 to win the title. Going the distance with Holyfield meant nothing, as he was never a real threat to win that fight.
BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle
Mate, plenty of boxers go undefeated till age 22, and many go way beyond that.
If a fighter is washed up after losing his first fight at the age of 23, then you know he was never a true champion in the first place. At the first sign of adversity Tyson crumbled, like the whiny-voiced, angry little kid-in-a-man's-body which he was.
roquefort88888 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle Yep, I agree, A sort of rewriting of boxing history has taken place....sorry he was awesome plus excellent defensive skills, its true after Douglas he went into decline, witness the struggle with Ruddock in 91, yet if he had fought Ruddock in Nov 1989 as he was due too, i don't doubt for a second he would have gone the same way as Bruno and Williams did, the guy never lost a round to a prime Bruno, a fighter who led Wtherspoon after 8 rounds, and Lewis after 6....
Indul1 6 months ago
@BettorOffSingle Tyson didn't "stop being Tyson." That's just how Tyson fans reassure themselves that he couldn't be beat: because if someone did beat him after 1989 it wasn't the "real Tyson" anyway so it doesn't count.
Every fighter goes through better and worse phases of their careers for a variety of reasons. I know all about Cus D'amato etc., but any fighter who's that dependent on one particular trainer is inadequate to begin with. It was up to Tyson to remember what he'd learned.
counterstriving 5 months ago
@counterstriving You are simultaneously both Wrong & Right. In regards to people reassuring themselves, Tyson's losses DID/DO count, BUT. he was NOT the same fighter after...well...even a while BEFORE Douglas. The loss of Cuss, the sudden fame, $, belt and lifestyle made, destroyed his training/work ethic. It's not so much that he was "lazy" as it is that he just wasn't "hungry" anymore. By the time he regained some of that old hunger (bankruptcy can do that), he no longer had the chops.
gjc82071 5 months ago
@gjc82071 Fair enough, what you say makes sense. I just get tired of people saying that Douglas, Holyfield and Lewis didn't beat the "real Tyson." For one thing, in between losing to those guys, Tyson was winning his other fights, against good fighters, mostly by knockout; and yet he lost convincingly to those 3, so you have to give them credit. For some reason a lot of Tyson fans are mad at Douglas especially, he's a bum etc.
counterstriving 5 months ago

@phoen99rising It would be unbelievably funny to see how YOU'D look after getting punched in the head by Foreman.

Was this fight shown on national television at the time? I was serving overseas and there was no television.

Well,to all u boxing fans, firstly styles make boxing,Ali is in my mind the Greatest heavyweight in history,u do not have to just have power, like Sony Liston, foreman or Frazier,u also need speed, art, tecknique etc,I am sure u all will agree, even after Ali losing 3 years of his PRIME boxing years,he came out and wooped Foreman who was then considered unbeatable!Rocky Marciano was strong but he was a small guy weing only 190lbs,and in his time believe me there were No great boxers,he only fought

the fights with ali took its toll on frazier...never was the same..too many ring wars..it takes a toll on all boxers

Both of them are easy in the top ten of all time.
danceswithwolvesful 7 months ago
@danceswithwolvesful How can you say Fraizer is in top ten of all time ? Fraizer beat a rusty Ali, but he later lost twice to Foreman and Ali, he never fought the other good fighters at that time like Norton, Shavers, Lyle or Young.
knockup100 7 months ago
@knockup100 He stopped a lot of tough guys such as Chuvalo and Quarry, and his fights with Ali were legendary. I agree this isnt enough for a top 10 position, but sometimes you can judge someone based on a small number of good fights. For example Tyson didnt really beat anyone great, but considering the unique skill he showed I think its fair to put him in the top 10. The same goes for Frazier, because apart from Marciano I couldnt think of a more relentless heavyweight. Just my 2 cents.
seblasian 7 months ago
@knockup100 Frazier's three wars with Ali, by themselves, put him in at least the top twenty.
Best ever? Tyson from 1985-1988. People FEARED him. After Cus died, it was all over for him.
BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle Tyson was the best at beating up average boxers in brutal fashion. But i dont believe that a trainer can prevent one from being average. And punchpower does certainly not suddenly disappear.

He had no Plan B.
roquefort88888 7 months ago
@roquefort88888 No contrqadiction. Cus was so great it took five years for Tyson to fully collapse after he died. It also took Buster Douglas having one of the best nights of all time in the ring. Then prison and Don King destroyed him.
BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
What I was impressed by Frazier is that he had no fear against Foreman and never gave up. I would jump out of the ring when i see him.

Good night

how come this was broadcasted live on ESPN when it was founded 1979?

@WhiteSlift It wasn't broadcasted on ESPN live. ESPN was not around then as you said. They are owned by ABC/Disney and they own ESPN classics. I assume it is from that library.

Ali was a great match up for Joe, because Ali didn't have the power Forman did to knock Joe out, and Joe could take so many shots that he was able to get on the inside to work Ali's body, wearing him down. so their fights just went on and on and on. However Joe Frazier using his style would never beat George Foreman, Frazier was made for Forman.

@rickosuave29 Thank you my friend. The ultimate comment to this fight. There is nothing more to say. 100 % support from me. Cheers mate.
bratseth2 8 months ago
@rickosuave29 Ali had enough power to dispose of SONNY LISTON twice in relatively early rounds (2 and 7-8).
Anyone who could beat Liston should not have had difficulty beating Frazier.
BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle My man, thx 4 your comment, 1st of all, He never knocked Sonny out, 1st fight he cut sonny's face up, and made him hurt his shoulder from swinging and missing, and in Round 8 sonny refused to come out of the corner, the 2nd fight Sonny took a dive, do u really believe he couldn't have gotten up? 3rd you r dissing Joe Frazier, to say compared to Liston he wasn't difficult to beat. Joe Frazier pushed Ali to a limit that no other fighter did. (maybe Ken Norton) Give Joe Credit.
rickosuave29 7 months ago

BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle people say the 70's, ofcourse because Ali made boxing explode, but I'm not so sure that it was, as far as having the tougher boxers, I think guys like Rocky Marciano,Joe Louis, Archie Moore, didn't do nearly as much for boxing as Ali did, but maybe they had more great fighters in that era, u take a guy like Sugar Ray Robinson, who I think pound for pound was the best ever. the man had more knockouts than Ali had professional fights. Then boxing changed it became more commercial.
rickosuave29 7 months ago
@rickosuave29 Pound for pound, I think a great case could be made for ROBERTO DURAN as the best ever. He also moved up three weight classes before he got stopped by Leonard, and he was a bit older at the time.
Boxing has always been very commercial. Louis was great, and so was Marciano, but I still see Tyson as on their level or above, at least through 1988. Tyson got BORED with the division as much as he was ruined by others.
BettorOffSingle 7 months ago
@BettorOffSingle The 70's was certainly the biggest era for boxing as a turning point, in which it became a sport in which people like Floyd Mayweather could make hundreds of Millions, all thanks to Ali, however I think more great boxers may have come out of the 40's and 50's, I'm not sure I'm still trying to figure that out for myself, but the experts do agree with you, that the 70's was the Greatest era.
