Thanks to trying to see the REAL Ruffian trying to still finish the race after she broke her leg, I remembered that this was the movie I watched with my grandmother where the "black horses leg snapped".

Ruffian wasn't one of the greatest she was the greatest. Every race horse either before or after had at least lost one race. And she could have one that match race. The sad thing is she was ahead when she broke her leg. If she hadn't broken that leg she would have won it. It's sad how they counted that race. They should have counted where she had made her bad step or at least not have counted it but ruffian will always be in our hearts mine especially

This is amazing! I don't know much about Ruffian, but I love horses, and I ride them as well.

I'm a Hunter-Jumper, and I ride a lesson horse named Topsider.

Apparently he was a great Hunter, but then he had an accident and couldn't be ridden for quite some time. But now he's back, not really showing, but I love to ride him, and he loves what he does, even if it is a big step back from what he used to do. So glad it didn't end for him like it did for Ruffian. Poor girl. :(

@96Mizzle if there wasn't racing, all of the horses that are racers would be killed, and all the foals that are going to be trained to race would be killed too.

@breyerhorserock hmm i don't think all of them would be killed. it is all about the money and they just would kill the horses to sell the meat, but they would get more money if they sell the horses (sry for the bad english :) )

it is just my opinion that horse racing does not make sense. the people just want to make money with betting, it is not about the horses, so they also could bet on human who are racing. this way innocent horses like ruffian would not have to be killed.

I read the book on Ruffian. I do not feel that she felt she let everyone down. She was still racing in her mind. They should have given her a mild temp. sedative; just a half dose or gave her a shot that would have kept her legs somewhat numb for a little longer until she was aware. It's like when they did a minor surgery on me and they numbed just the one area but not all of me.

@52Joy That might have helped, but Ruffian was known to have a problem with casts, so after that wore off she could have threw a fit and this time they wouldn't be able to put a cushiony pillow cast on.

@RunLikeAFilly I meant to explain that they would keep her in a position where she could not get to the cast. I remember a story where the people suspended their horse in a big gigantic sling under the bell with feet barely touching the ground. They kept the horse in this for some time. He had been starved old and weak and could not even walk. They hung the sling from the ceiling. This was in the 20's or 30's. Now they have better technology so should be able to modernize that.

They should have let her come out of it gradually so she would get use to her surroundings and situation. They blew it. When you have been in a car accident or other trauma when you first wake up or come out of surgery you many times do not know where you are. If that happens to humans it would happen easily to a animal. She was still at the track in her mind running. She did not remember the breakdown or pain. The Best Horse except for Man O War.

I hate racing some horses become addicted to it thats what Ruffian did if you look it up on wiki it tells you that they say she imagined she was still racing since the way she moved her legs was like she was running and thus broke her other leg

if you can get them in .flv format you might be able to convert them with a program from sourceforge but sometimes the programs there are unfinnished so they can have glitches

@ZeAquaLugia its because of the shock from breaking her leg, then she was put under anesthetic, then woke up and had recovered from the shock, and her memory took her to the last thing she was doing which was in that race x
