The Bee Gees were the essential genius of the album ... but Tavares' version p@wns theirs. The limber scrap and soul of their voices interests me more, and as does the more expansive key.
Where is the battle of SNF cuts? Mine are "How Deep Is Your Love?" "Manhattan Skyline," "More Than A Woman," "Night Fever" and "If I Can't Have You" (which feels ripe for some kind of twisted remake ... maybe that's happened, if so won't someone tell me?)
But it was released as a single - after the Tavares version fell down to the bottom of the charts RSO records released the Bee Gees version on a 45. I have it.
Both Tavares and Bee Gees sang this well, but it was written by the brothers Gibb...as was numberous hits hat were recorded by others...such as "Islands In A Stream"(Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton)
I was in high school when this song was a hit...I remember the kids liked this Tavares version of "More Than A Woman" better than the Bee Gees version. It just had so much more soul to it...And it was (and still is) fun to sing along to!
I am 53, from the big Apple. Grew up listening to all this music. I am so glad I grew up during those times, it started in 76 for me then it ran all the way to 83 when I joined the Marines. I hung out tough for 7 years in the best city in the world. Loved it. Worked all day, partied all night and then repeated.
Its a darn shame, should have been Dawson and Joey walking in the sunset...............Pacey is a douchebag ,what kind of guy steals his best friends girlfriend??? With friends like Pacey who needs enemies!
Simply fabulous group! Great voices and sexy as all get out!!! Hats off to these guys mom and dad...LOL! Fine, fine, fine, and super talented too! Ya can't ask for much more than that! Peace to all.
Always thought this sounded so slick and tight. Great voices on these dudes! A great song penned by the BeeGee's, and Tavares voices made it even better. It's why it's included on that soundtrack.
@Hinda39 You're right! Back then, musical groups had to run the gauntlet of countless gigs and nightclubs before getting noticed and signed on with one of the big music labels, like Motown for example.
Today, solo singers and groups can be manufactured out of thin air and rammed down our throats by marketing formulas and profit margins.
Technology has paradoxically destroyed talent because it's cheaper to manipulate and exploit consumers. Music is just another disposable commodity now.
Got to know Tavares very well in the 70`s when they were touring in the UK. They were the best group of their time. Fabulous, it takes me back and I wish we could get his music back. Chubby was always favourite with me although I loved them all
I lived in Bay Village. A housing project in New Bedford massachusetts. I live next door the Auntie Jenny. ( the Aunt of Tavares) As a very young kid I used to listen to these guys sing on the park wall right under my bedroom window. I can even remember thier first national apperance on the Mike Douglas show. We were all crammed into the the back hall of the Band Club to watch on a small 13" black and white tv!!!! My name is Billy Griva ( Pat's son) I love listening to them still!!!!
