Jaco did not only play a fretless bass! There are plenty of videos where Jaco played a fretted bass, for example in his instructional DVD he had changed the neck to fretted. And also he practiced on a fretted bass to better improve his intonation on a fretless bass. Also as he put it the strings ate up the neck on his original bass so he had to only play it for shows.
@GuiseppePipes las lineas original de Havona eran tocadas en fretless por Jaco, y además, con excelente afinación, no respondo en inglés porque da pereza.
@bronzehydra3 more difficult to read... definitely. more difficult to memorize.... defintley. but YYZ does contain more technically difficult parts.... i guess its subjective though, like anything
Son of a b****, I remember walking to the record store in the rain when Heavy Weather was released, because my car broke down because of that song. Word of Mouth is also a bang up work. He was so talented, but so ill in his mind, God rest his soul. Pat Metheny, Joe Zawinul and others literally had to stop working with him, he was so erractic and would go off his meds. That was absolutely awesome playing.
real nice playing bro. You should check out where the word Havona comes from. It's a name of a heavenly place in The Urantia Book. That's what Jaco named this tune after, as he read the book.
Playing any jaco pastorius song on bass is difficult I though when I learned teen town I aconplished somthing after seeing this makes me feel like I'm a noob very impressive playing at jacos speed is soooooo hard
Hey this is just amazing !!.. its without the doubt the best imitation of Havona i've EVER heard . .. far better than anyone else out there who's tried to play Havona. Hats off to you !!! Wish I could play like you.
@javibasseden Hey, I pretty much always run my bass flat with a little bass boost, but I'm sure I was rolled pretty hard toward the bridge pickup to get that Jaco tone. Every room and situation is different, but that should get you in the general area!
I think Jaco plays more ahead of the beat, which is just something to keep in mind to make it completely perfect (though it is your interpretation, of course). Seriously, awesome stuff.
That's the great thing about being young, you have the time to spend to work this out and learn how to play it. I transcribed and learned "Continuum" when I was 20, and played it as my music college audition. I'm 41 now with 2 kids. Could I play it now? Not a chance!
Hey-sorry, I transcribed this directly from the recording to the bass, so I never actually "transcribed" it to paper. If you're still really looking for a written out transcription, I believe Bass Player Magazine did a transcription of this for their 20th Anniversary of Jaco's death last year... Good luck!
Holy shit man, nothin' but props for that!! I've been working on that song for a couple of years now, and although I feel like I have it down a good share, your interpretation is still very accurate. For as passionate and personal as Jaco's playing is, you do it much justice. "I'm not worthy!!!"
How sad that so many people have to "hate" on it because it's not an original idea.
Have to say that's a great job. The way to create your own is by learning your predecessors and from there launch off on your own. That's an important aspect of jazz. Humans build on culture and the fastest way to learn what another has learnt is by imitating as much as you can. It'll help you find licks and lines so that you can use them to express yourself at other times. It's the same as language. If not we'll keep reinventing the wheel.
Thanks, crazyguy! I really couldn't have summed it up better myself... Anybody who knows my normal playing is well aware that I don't sound much like Jaco (and even if I tried to, I STILL would sound like me playing in a Jaco way or with Jaco vocabulary). Me taking from Jaco and learning his material is no different than how Jaco took from Charlie Parker (If you're not convinced, give Jaco's Donna Lee another listen). Like Crazyguy said, why reinvent the wheel?-just develop it! Thanks all
thats like saying you stevie ray vaughn is a beter guitarist than hendrix...technical shit isnt the issue... its artistic impression that is sacred... cannot be duplicated!
Wow, man your good. Kudos my friend. I've been working on this song for MONTHS now and havn't even gotten close to completing that solo. Man, you've got it, keep playing for as long as you can.
Never seen a video with Jaco playing this legendary solo... i think it's all written, lots of his solos were written for the studio...on this level, it's more composing than improvisation... The young man on the video is plaing the solo perfectly! But what about is own solo??? His own sound??

I´m Sorry, but your post is ridiculous. Here the bass player is performing Jaco, and he knows his thing!! That is all, if you can play that, you can play a beautiful solo... Can´t You????
Copy is easy, make is own thing is difficult. Dave Liebman says: 10 years to learn how to learn an instrument, 10 years to play music, 10 years to find what to play...
you're right i'm not here to fight too. But for me music is not a sport. It's a way to express yourself, with your OWN personality. Copy is very important to learn music. It is harder to find a personnal way. Anyway, the guy got fast fingers...he plays the solo perfectly.

I agree with you, he might be a great bassist, but it takes more skill and mind to write then to cover. Not saying that there is anything wrong with this performance or anything but its the mind that makes the musician in the long run.
Very nice! There is a guy I watch in town named Sean Deabbit, and he plays a Jaco concert once or twice a year. His band and himself are absolutely fantastic! I believe he tours around. If you have a chance to see him, do it!
Wow, that is amazing! Love this tune, love Jaco. I tried learning this way back in the day when I was 19; had to slow the record down to 16 to learn it. I always thought is was one of those impossible things to learn. This guy makes it look so easy!!!
Man....Brent is the man....they sure look like Bass fingers to me.....whew...I had the honor of meeting this amazing talent.....keep going my brother Peace, Craig
