  • Jaco did not only play a fretless bass! There are plenty of videos where Jaco played a fretted bass, for example in his instructional DVD he had changed the neck to fretted. And also he practiced on a fretted bass to better improve his intonation on a fretless bass. Also as he put it the strings ate up the neck on his original bass so he had to only play it for shows.

  • Fair effort

  • Im gonna catch shit for this, but why is Geddy Lee's YYZ part is simply more difficult, technically, to play.

  • @GuiseppePipes This song is DEFINITELY much more difficult

  • @bronzehydra3 more difficult to read... definitely. more difficult to memorize.... defintley. but YYZ does contain more technically difficult parts.... i guess its subjective though, like anything

  • Nice one, really.

  • Nice Hat!!!!

  • i heard you screw up the timing near the start of the solo :P

    GJ man nice tone :D

  • Son of a b****, I remember walking to the record store in the rain when Heavy Weather was released, because my car broke down because of that song. Word of Mouth is also a bang up work. He was so talented, but so ill in his mind, God rest his soul. Pat Metheny, Joe Zawinul and others literally had to stop working with him, he was so erractic and would go off his meds. That was absolutely awesome playing.

  • 2:00-3:04 AMAZING!!

  • and that's the difference between brent rusinow and jaco pastorius.

  • real nice playing bro. You should check out where the word Havona comes from. It's a name of a heavenly place in The Urantia Book. That's what Jaco named this tune after, as he read the book.

  • Is this a school project? What school is this?

  • @maddtappin NH Bass Fest.

  • those arpeggios are hard

  • Jaco would never have touched that bass.

  • @madsemil23 That was a joke right?

  • @Achilles1223 Jaco only played fretless.

  • @madsemil23 Well its still funny. If you have time watch this /watch?v=sVY4quArLBk&feature=related

Nice performance by Jaco and also this, it may teach you something aswell /watch?v=fgK5VygLxbc. I think he would have.

  • @Achilles1223 Hm. I guess i failed pretty much on that part. Well in that case: Yes it was a joke.

  • @madsemil23 That's not true. Did you see hie instructional video.? Jazz bass with fretted p-bass neck.

  • Great sound and feel of the music. Amazing.

  • Is your bass fretted? Or just lined?

  • your left hand really impresses me. i teach technique and young bass players could learn a lot from you. awesome transcription by the way. bravo.

  • EXCELLENT playing my bass brother! Keep on rockin that fodera man!

  • Playing any jaco pastorius song on bass is difficult I though when I learned teen town I aconplished somthing after seeing this makes me feel like I'm a noob very impressive playing at jacos speed is soooooo hard

  • Nice dude

    any transacriptions available?

  • awesome, is that a Fodera your playing?

  • Wow. That's seriously impressive.

  • Hey this is just amazing !!.. its without the doubt the best imitation of Havona i've EVER heard . .. far better than anyone else out there who's tried to play Havona. Hats off to you !!! Wish I could play like you.

  • Really accurate and great tone. Super bass playing Brent. Really nice.

    -Lucas Pickford

  • Hi Brent!!!! Amazing cover!!!!! I've got the same Fodera but...What's the EQ do you use for this song (in the bass)????!!!!! Thanks!

  • @javibasseden Hey, I pretty much always run my bass flat with a little bass boost, but I'm sure I was rolled pretty hard toward the bridge pickup to get that Jaco tone. Every room and situation is different, but that should get you in the general area!

  • this song aint sound good without fretless man to be honest.

  • sick fucking shit!

  • well done!

  • Beautiful baby.

  • .........and that's why Pastorius was the best

  • fodera monarch♥

    my dream

  • Diggin' the Brewers hat...

  • beautiful sound

  • im gonna cry

  • I think Jaco plays more ahead of the beat, which is just something to keep in mind to make it completely perfect (though it is your interpretation, of course). Seriously, awesome stuff.

  • Also jaco plays a lot of his notes really staccato, giving it a more percussive feel. Still awesome though.

  • great job!

  • that run is INSANEE!!!! and you nail it, keep floggin that bass

  • dude that was CaRA-AzY!!

  • FODERAAAAAAA. uhhh so sick

  • Great perfomance!!!, congratulations...from an argentinian bassist

  • maestro,yo tambien soy argentino, che,no sabes si en algun lugar de Bs As tendran algun fodera?mataria por tocarlo, jaja.muchas gracias!:D

  • I never get tired of watching this kid.

  • Well done but it ain't quite the same played on a fretted bass.

  • very very nice man. I wish I could've heard the rest of the bass part all the way out tho, jaco plays some really cool licks in that last chorus

  • great song and bassing. go brewers.

  • killer fodera dude!

  • Bravissimo!

Mi ricordi quando anch`io molti anni fa studiavo al basso i fraseggi e lo stile di Jaco.

  • The spirit of Jaco lives on in you dude!!!

  • Very impressive, you nailed that note for note! One of my all trime favorite WR tunes, and few bass players can hang with it like you did.

  • Fark dude - awesome!!!!

  • Nailed it!

  • krak sem comentarios pru humilde cidadao...

  • Sexy Fodera

  • GOOD JOB KID!

  • Salud!

    I don't like his cap. 8O

    Great playing!!!

  • Great !!!!

The groove and magic soul live in your hands.

    Peace, love and music friend.

  • amazing o___o

  • just practice...nothing more...

  • amazing, just exactly how jaco played

  • all i can say is, thank you for making jaco more famous. i am sorry there is nothing else to say.

  • There is no life in this performance. Your playing reeks of technicality.

You're a better player than this.

  • jelaous? haha

  • hey, this is amazing, and whether there was technicality or not- may i say fuck your technicality good sir :P

who needs that when u got soul and groove? :D

  • Jaco was a genius... well played... that riff is hard as crap...!

  • hell. yes.

  • superb

  • great show mate!

  • Absolutely perfect.

  • true bro

  • That's the great thing about being young, you have the time to spend to work this out and learn how to play it. I transcribed and learned "Continuum" when I was 20, and played it as my music college audition. I'm 41 now with 2 kids. Could I play it now? Not a chance!

  • you wouldnt happen too still have the transcription would you

  • Hey-sorry, I transcribed this directly from the recording to the bass, so I never actually "transcribed" it to paper. If you're still really looking for a written out transcription, I believe Bass Player Magazine did a transcription of this for their 20th Anniversary of Jaco's death last year... Good luck!

  • excellent!

  • Beautiful - You really have that Jaco sound. Very Impressive!

  • Killed it!!!

    Well done.

  • Smokin´

  • awesome

  • grandissimo

  • Who is that kid? Dude, you are really awesome!

  • you are really really good

  • i want a fandora too

  • fodera.

  • Whoa.

  • Man, the guy is really good!

  • IAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

  • damn, is that a fodera?

  • Amazing stuff.

  • Whoa!!! very impressive! I like the tone and all the little things you kept in this Jaco solo. I've never seen anyone do this so solo accurately.

I'm from Wisconsin, I love the brewers cap Too!

    Cheers!

  • amazing

  • VERI GUUD

  • Holy shit man, nothin' but props for that!! I've been working on that song for a couple of years now, and although I feel like I have it down a good share, your interpretation is still very accurate. For as passionate and personal as Jaco's playing is, you do it much justice. "I'm not worthy!!!"

How sad that so many people have to "hate" on it because it's not an original idea.

  • just say : wow... that's a very good play... amating and well done...

  • great

  • Have to say that's a great job. The way to create your own is by learning your predecessors and from there launch off on your own. That's an important aspect of jazz. Humans build on culture and the fastest way to learn what another has learnt is by imitating as much as you can. It'll help you find licks and lines so that you can use them to express yourself at other times. It's the same as language. If not we'll keep reinventing the wheel.

  • Thanks, crazyguy! I really couldn't have summed it up better myself... Anybody who knows my normal playing is well aware that I don't sound much like Jaco (and even if I tried to, I STILL would sound like me playing in a Jaco way or with Jaco vocabulary). Me taking from Jaco and learning his material is no different than how Jaco took from Charlie Parker (If you're not convinced, give Jaco's Donna Lee another listen). Like Crazyguy said, why reinvent the wheel?-just develop it! Thanks all

  • thats like saying you stevie ray vaughn is a beter guitarist than hendrix...technical shit isnt the issue... its artistic impression that is sacred... cannot be duplicated!

  • well done!

  • wow that was amazing

  • Wow, man your good. Kudos my friend. I've been working on this song for MONTHS now and havn't even gotten close to completing that solo. Man, you've got it, keep playing for as long as you can.

  • jajajajajaja well, we'll never forget you pastorius?

  • Waw, that is a fodera. what a thing of beauty

  • why do all these bassplayers play fuckin' fodera's? or is that just a lame ass cort?

  • Never seen a video with Jaco playing this legendary solo... i think it's all written, lots of his solos were written for the studio...on this level, it's more composing than improvisation... The young man on the video is plaing the solo perfectly! But what about is own solo??? His own sound??

  • i'd like to think that if he's exposing himself to compositions such as this one, he's likely to come up with some very interesting things of his own. But the point of performing this solo wasn't to share his original ideas obviously. It is spot on though.

  • I´m Sorry, but your post is ridiculous. Here the bass player is performing Jaco, and he knows his thing!! That is all, if you can play that, you can play a beautiful solo... Can´t You????

  • Copy is easy, make is own thing is difficult. Dave Liebman says: 10 years to learn how to learn an instrument, 10 years to play music, 10 years to find what to play...

  • Sorry i´m not here to fight but let us see yours videos....;)

  • Sorry i´m not here to fight but let us see yours videos....;)

  • you're right i'm not here to fight too. But for me music is not a sport. It's a way to express yourself, with your OWN personality. Copy is very important to learn music. It is harder to find a personnal way. Anyway, the guy got fast fingers...he plays the solo perfectly.

  • Its also a lot more expressive to sit with your headphones on transcribing Jaco than loafing around making pointless posts on youtube. Youd be spending your time a lot better that way.

  • I agree man, he should have gotten a band to play the song with him and then done his own solo man. Use that jazz language.

  • But Jaco didn't have 30 Years time to invent a new style. He did it in much less time. And that's one of the many things that I like about Jaco.

  • I agree with you, he might be a great bassist, but it takes more skill and mind to write then to cover. Not saying that there is anything wrong with this performance or anything but its the mind that makes the musician in the long run.

  • true that.

  • even in copying though, your own playing comes out. Whether it's what frets you use or even accents. even the best covers are something different

  • Who the hell Dave may be, those statements are shit worth to me.

  • the challenge is buy that bass is to expensive, great song.

eternal life to francis jaco pastorius the 3rd

  • really? eternal life you say, well i heard he DIED

  • Very nice! There is a guy I watch in town named Sean Deabbit, and he plays a Jaco concert once or twice a year. His band and himself are absolutely fantastic! I believe he tours around. If you have a chance to see him, do it!

  • the real challenge is on a fretless!!!

  • Great!

  • Wow, that is amazing! Love this tune, love Jaco. I tried learning this way back in the day when I was 19; had to slow the record down to 16 to learn it. I always thought is was one of those impossible things to learn. This guy makes it look so easy!!!

  • His hat is very early Jaco-esque too. Nice playing and very nice bass. Keep it up.

  • Brent plays Bach - search bass workout

  • how old is this guy?

  • 23 i think

  • Man....Brent is the man....they sure look like Bass fingers to me.....whew...I had the honor of meeting this amazing talent.....keep going my brother Peace, Craig

  • These aren't bass players fingers... But great playing..

  • Do You mean that U have to be fat ass to play bass ? that's so funny :). Hear this guy and bite ur tongue next time

  • I didn't mean bad ;) Just saying that it's well played and even if you haven't got changes to do something you can do it with spirit.

  • did u see brent playing continuum? ... just as good

  • Nice one. Really impressive!

  • is that a fodera bass, not cheap

  • Wow man, I'm impressed! You did an excellent job on this.

  • Oh man i just laughed the whole way through that... it was that amazing there was nothing else to do. I know it were'nt your bass part but you played it like it was. Yes, brother, yes.
