I have this issue. I contacted tech support about a year ago and they gave me instructions to change some settings.... It didn't work. It made the microphone be open all the time, so if you, for instance, tapped the Keyboard or shut the lid fast, you would hear an echo through the speakers. So I changed it back.

I've done the bios update. all I can say is do what this video says. I found it too, for some reason the noise stops when the recording control panel is open

I too have the same problem for my new Vaio E series VPCEB46FG. The noise is even more prominent while inserting something to the usb port. Say for example when i plug in an usb mouse. I have tried my level best to fix this, searched all over the net and still i didnt find any fix. Its really annoying. And the overall build quality sucks big time. Even then i admit its sheer performance and the ease with which it handles any game.

Hello. May I ask you something... Does the backlight light only the key edges or also the letter on it? I'm asking you this 'cause I'm thinking about getting one of those, and because I'm Brazilian and American keyboards don't have proper accents for Portuguese language, I will use special stickers to corvent the keyboard to Brazilian standards. And of course, the letters won't light up.

Seems like the mic picks up the sound from fan and HD, amplifies it and send it out to the speakers.

Just turn off the mic or set it not to loop the signal back to the speakers.

Mine died after 16 days. First it would blue screen every time I started Micr. Office or insert a DVD. Sometimes 5 times a day. Then it failed to boot completely. Am waiting for a replacement from Sony, though not sure I want one anymore but Future Shop will not give my money back. Any problems with yours?

But the new one has this noise issue today I returned it also. In general very noisy laptop fan makes extra noise even when Idle, display is far below from $1200 laptop expectations. For my experience both of them were lagging and were slow. I found some reviews mentioning the same, might be due to terrible VAIO bloatware?? do not recommend anyone.

just picked one up yesterday for $1350, nice to see how netbooks have lowered the price of laptops. three years ago something comparable would have been about $2300. I actually went to the store for a macbook pro but i just could not talk myself into buying one when i could get this for $1000 less. Screw that, btw linux mint 8 loads very well on here, wireless does not work on load but will fix itself during updates via the wired ethernet port.

Just got my vaio f11 from sony usa last wednesday night. It came with a dead pixel in the upper right side. When I talked to sony about it the rep said it was normal they refuse to refund or fix. Doesn't seem normal to me. LCD it comes with 1080p has horrible motion blur. fan makes a nasty winning noise. I bought this laptop, i do have this buzzing noise, and the temp solution works. I saw some other solutions that don't work, lucky me it only buzzes the first 5 minutes from boot. Great laptop though. On other topic, the backlit keyboard and the auto-brightness settings will only work when surroundings are dark.

@lop3z9 i have and i regret it, had to restore and it is not very fast, it takes 5 seconds to actually turn on after i press the power button, its almost as if i hadnt pressed it and eventually it starts, then when i type in my passowrd and i get the home screen it freezes (hace to hold power button) and if i go to CTRL + ALT + DELETE it has 8 threads and 4 are always abpve 50 %, im no genius but my 6y old desktop doesnt do tht with only 1.8ghz single core :S, im sending it to sony ASAP

you don't have to mute the mic. you can switch the playback to digital output and now no buzz and you can use your mic! sooooo...control panel- hardware and sound- sound-recording- (right click) mic icon and select properties-listen tab then select digital output on the drop down menu under "playback through this device" yayyyyyyyyyyy thank goodness for the internet because sony was no help!!!

there is still no permanent fix on sony's esupport website. they have a patch for audio driver that resolves the issue for noise when plugging in and out a usb drive. it does not fix this buzzing.

Go to Start, then Control Panel, and then click on the Hardware & Sound category. Then click on the Sound category, and then click on the Recording tab. Highlight the microphone and go to Properties. Select the Listen tab and Mute the mic as well as put a check mark where it says Listen to this device. That should fix everything. When you want to use the mic or webcam, just undo these settings.

I believe this static noise is not from the hard drive, it might come for the speaker or the Main board.

@mr12345678901993. I agree with colinmann84. I also came to chose between those two particular models because of the i7 processor, DDR3 RAM and video card.

However the XPS 16 has an overheating problem (nothing major but annoying), also a power supply problem (the adaptor gets really hot) and reduced performance when on AC power (the 90W adaptor doesn't give enough "juice").

I say go for the VAIO!

You can run any application that loads the CPU to disable the whine. I'd prefer something that was backgrounded.

The backlight only turn on when the room is dark. However, you can put a little tape on top of the sensor to keep the backlight on at all time.

Some European model might not have the backlight features. But if you have the US version, the back light will turn on when the room is dark, or you can put a tape on top of the sensor above the F9 Key to keep it on.

Hi, thanks for the video as I was wary about buying one of these! I cannot hear the sound with the video unfortunately. However seeing as the sound goes when clicking on recording it seems it is either a driver or microphone issue. Does the sound stop until you reboot? Secondly could you try and right click and disable to microphone. Does it keep making that noise after reboot?

I had try reboot or disable the microphone, but the static buzzing noise is there still. The only way to stop the noise is by click on the recording tap and leave the window open. I am hoping Sony will have a fix patch soon.

Hi! I am very happy with the laptop for it price and performance on it Sony brand. This is a workstation type of laptop so I mainly use it at home with AC power on at all time. However, I think for normal usage browsing the net etc... should go up to 2.5 hours with out any problem.

Other than the buzzing noise issue, I will say I love this notebook and considering to get rid of my Macbook unibody. However, the screen is the as crisp as the Apple Macbook. As far as the gaming, I haven't try any yet. I mainly use this notebook for PS and Video editiing.
