The are still way ahead of their time, and more innovative than most, and far more listenable over a longer period of time, than anything today. The still sound fresh, interesting and highly addictive.
yello have been the inventors of electronic music without a doubt. genius. it doesnt get more innovativ. got their first record in the eighties. def still in my top 5 of all time bands. cheers
@frankalien Raymond Scott was one of the first people to mess with electronic music. You'd recognize his stuff, too. He was most known for really odd jazz that was often arranged into cartoons during the 50s. Look up Powerhouse and you'll know what I mean.
I was joyous when I first got this 12" back in the late 80's.
Nobody else I knew had heard anything like it so I used to take it with me to the local clubs. It certainly did the trick getting the floor jamm packed!
I have this someplace. The cover is kinda of a non-shiny gold tone with a Black & Gold photo of Dieter Meyer sit a table in a restuarant, if memory serves.
There's a motif in the recording that recalls Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express.
That 'underrated' thingy is really stupid, not to use with Yello, but with everything. The people who like it, actually rate it really high. And people who dislike it, those are who underrate something. And they won't change their minds because you just don't stop shouting "underrated! underrated!"
Let's face it guys, there is just less of us Yello fans in the world than others' fans. Who cares, seems we can support them enough to do it again and again, that's all that matters.
@AMYuntold I think "underrated" is a wider term than just the verdict of people who have experienced it, but can also imply that the general public is ignorant of it, and that it deserves to be more popular, and that it would be that if it was more exposed. I mean that when people say "yello is underrated", it's not protest against the general public saying that "yello is shit", I think it's a protest against the general public saying "wtf is yello? oh whatever..."
My god, there ARE actually SOME smart people in the world! I too came to the utter realization that Yello were LIGHT YEARS ahead of their time. And not SO MUCH on this album, but check out Stella and One Second and you will thus hear that they were already there years ago. I remember the "techno" '90s VERY well, and everybody thought they were hearing the latest, greatest, "newest" innovations... HA! Yello already had done it peeps. Yello IS HIGHLY H-I-G-H-L-Y under-rated! Listen to these guys!
The larger problem is that they aren't on most people's radar in first place for most people to have any opinion.
They never had the conventional publicity of radioplay or touring going for them. Probably most people know their work from movie soundtracks but rarely investigated who's song it is.
They only time I ever saw any coverage or print advertisement for them was in now defunct magazine "The Trouser Press".
@himself801 It was Heavy Metal mag circa early 80s and their late editor/curmudgeon Lou Stathis that first made me aware of them (as well as a host of remarkable others, all were under-the-radar of overrated, overexposed mediocrity). Beuller wasn't even around then.
I completely adore this and the 12 inch of 'Lost Again', used to play them to death back in the early part of the 80's.
