History does repeat itself, but Olbermann's history lesson was a little slanted. I am American and I do have an education asshole. I think it is reasonable to argue about whether torture (I think we should agree by now waterboarding is torture) should be used in special cases (ex: the "Ticking Bomb" theory though it is not perfect). There are good points on both sides.
Personally, I think it can be used in cases where we can handle a moral blow.

I can find you just as many experts who will tell you it's not as tell you it is. Secondly, we know for 100% certainty that waterboarding saved American lives. This is the ACTUAL use of waterboarding (aka chinese water torture) is used usually (excluding military training). The music, blindfold, hand towel, and the pouring is all part of the tactic.

History does repeat itself, but Olbermann's history lesson was a little slanted. I am American and I do have an education asshole. Also (and I agree torture is wrong) people are gonna hate the US regardless. When we do good things, when we do bad things, certain groups still hate us (alot of them still want to mover here for some reason though). I think we should make the right decisions but I would never base them on our world approval rating.

By waterboarding him, we found out what he knows and we were able to prevent future attacks, PERIOD!!! He was commenting on Olbermann judging people's morality from the past without the given mindset of the past (aka preaching morals out-of-context). You can draw your moral lessons from history as you please.
Also, the host was just messing around when he suggested Olbermann called Bush a slave-owning nazi lover (some people missed the sarcasm in a given video for some reason). All the host was suggesting is Olbermann should just stop obsessing with Bush already.

Do you want to know the difference between Chinese Water Torture and waterboarding? One is done sadistically in order to punish and hurt over the course of hours or days and one is done for no more than 10 seconds and does no lasting harm to the person. But like I said, if you are against waterboarding, then you are for Americans dying when they don't have to. You can have either one or the other. Not both. Sorry that there are no easy decisions in life...

Jeffbatt2000 - It is very difficult to (dis)prove that waterboarding Kalid Sheik Mohammed saved many American lives simply because it is based off speculation and assumptions.
I think it is reasonable to argue about whether torture (I think we should agree by now waterboarding is torture) should be used in special cases (ex: the "Ticking Bomb" theory though it is not perfect). There are good points on both sides.
Personally, I think it can be used in cases where we can handle a moral blow.

Laws and treaties which we have signed and are a party to expressly forbid torture under any and all circumstances, absolutely no exceptions.
There is no wiggle room on this non-debate "debate."
And none of the above even gets to the facts that torture doesn't work, creates more people that hate us and want to become terrorists, is immoral, makes testimony inadmissable, and makes us hypocritical.

The moral issue arises from Olbermann judgement on people from the past, which my last comments had nothing to do torture (explaining the sarcastic remark by the host).
I'm not arguing the legal aspects, which are quite obvious and a non-debate. But you made it a debate in your last sentence, as there ARE arguments for torture.
It is true testimony is not as reliable, but the idea for torture is to get information ASAP (Ticking Bomb theory). The acts are either just or unjust (not immoral).

You have the legal part, but that is pretty much it.
Valid (non-legal terminology) and logical go hand-and-hand. If you have the justification and reasoning (by accepting the arguments and situation), then you have a logical and valid ground.
Ethical and Morals are also together. In this case, it is an opinion of a standard taken as right-and-wrong (terms that are usually abused) . If we took everything as black-and-white, we would ignore the situation (but that is never the case).

It is hard to judge whether when we did use water boarding, we prevented anything. Also, it is hard to judge whether the pros and cons together can be considered counter-productive (but we are all entitle to our opinions).
But this idea of morals coming from you is annoying. Moral/Ethics differ between times, cultures, and situations (which contradict this idea of black&white morals). This arguments was used by slave-owners to justify a moral right to own slaves (religiously and economically).

That's where you are wrong. First of all, I challenge your assumption that waterboarding is torture. It is not universally accepted that it is torture. I can find you just as many experts who will tell you it's not as tell you it is. Secondly, we know for 100% certainty that waterboarding saved American lives. So, if you are against waterboarding in all circumstances (for info-gathering, not for kicks) then you are for Americans dying. I'm sorry, but you can't have it both ways.

Secondly, Google search engine is based off link clicks (excluding sponsors and partnerships). It is commonly understood that liberals are more active on the internet than conservatives. When searching general political topics, you would expect more liberal sites on the first page than conservatives, thus making them more likely to be clicked on, etc. (snowball effect).

Just because an idea takes on opposition does not mean it is rational. Even those that are totally argue torture accept the the cons of that position. Like that bureaucracy can lead to terrorist getting away, or that terrorist will exploit weaken as a sign for recruitment (just like do if we torture).
There are no easy answers. Irrational ideas tend to be those that you are not willing to listen to.

if i read this instead of watched this, i'd think it were a group of middle schoolers talking. i watch countdown almost every night becuase keith DOES report the facts and calls others out on false or skewed reporting. I also like red eye, but come on. CRIMES WERE COMMITED and in ANY modern day society those who committed them SHOULD answer for the things they have done.
sometime i think the red eye folks disagree just because they are 'on the right', feeling some kind of ridiculous obligation.
