If you can compare hitomi to anyone it's probably Momoe Yamaguchi. Like Momoe, her early work was poorly received and annoyingly cutesy but midcareer she took a more mature and edgier route and soared. Both had more control over their images than any idol star in Japan before or since. The only difference is Momoe quit at 21 and is basically frozen in time. Hitomi on the other hand seems to get better with age.

Yes, agreed, she does. I'm glad she took more control over such things, as I wouldn't be enjoying her work as much as I do now if she'd remained a Britney Spears type. I've never heard anything of Momoe's, so I can't compare, honestly. But yes, hitomi gets better with age and time--she's a good bit older than the typical J-pop idol and looks gorgeous, too, while she's at it. *wub*

This song in particular is making me think that she is very much a Japanese version of Shakira, with her image and sound. She has in common with Shakira the fact that they may not be technically perfect singers, but they sing with attitude and feeling above all. Good show, and love that white Les Paul she's strumming on--wonder if she really plays at all?

totally ! I was in Japan when I heard it back in 2004, I loved it so much and brought her album back home. It just raises so many wonderful memories back.
