I have to say that this is one of my favorite songs of all time. The Garry Owen connection was entirely lost on me before, but now that I see it for what it is, I say that it is as it should be.
My Grandfather was half-Cherokee, and his ancestors were victims on the Trail of Tears. Even to this day, it is something that we cannot speak of among family members because the shame and hatred is so strong. Some deny it, but I honor my grandfather's memory.
Benteen explained to the 1879 Court of Inquiry why he did what he did, and his reasoning is equally clear from subsequent remarks. He thought it impossible to obey; to do so would have been suicide. "We were at their hearths and homes," he said, referring to the Sioux, "their medicine was working well, and they were fighting for all the good God gives anyone to fight for."
— Evan S. Connell in Son of the Morning Star, pg. 281, cited on the Wikipedia page for Frederick Benteen.
I had to leave my best friends years and years ago. He was offended that Ulali used Gary Owen as the background to their song. I THOUGHT IT WAS PERFECT!!! We are still great friends, but just have a differing opinion on Native American music. This is a wonderful song and I am so glad you posted it! Way to go!!!
this is my favorite of all your works. such a proud majestic stature in these rare photographs. its a mini documentary. i would love to see a set of documentaries just like these. there is so little of it out there! god bless and may great luck always be with you.
this is a very commendable video on your part and the photos with all of the native headdress, regalia, the horses etc are breathtaking to watch and with your concise & informative narration it helps bring the video to life. great job. thank you very much for posting and i will keep my eye out for more of your work in the future.

@andyfedel
It was no accident that Ulali chose the melody of the Garryowen, or Custer's 7th Calvary marching song.
