  • what did he mean when he said hes an anarchist?

  • I would imagine that he means his approach towards life in ethics and perception of life. Be willing to break common rules instead sticking to them regardless. A free open mind willing to rejudge a situation.

  • His Photographs and his sense of timing are truly amazing. The Decisive Moment,is what he is about.

  • Having conducted 500 half-hour TV interviews, I can say that people with mediocre accomplishments will talk your ear off--you ask one question and they'll monologue for the rest of the segment. Brilliant people are often shy or embarrassed by their own genius. My view is that Charlie is one of the best, evidenced by the fact he got HCB to talk about himself, which obviously goes against his nature given that HCB is an observer not a pontificator.

  • this is almost embarrassing. HCB was very patient with this moron. HCB is a treasured artist. His cool character comes across regardless.

  • i'm sorry but I don't see what everyone is complaining about here. To me these are just two very passioned people having a very interesting conversation...It's a treasure to be able to watch and learn from such a great artist as HCB, and CR makes it possible! Just suck it up and you'll be a richer human being for it!

  • Terrible interviewer.

  • i agree that Rose is a bit too opinionated coming into a question and seemed to force his view EVEN TO THE PERSON HE'S TALKING ABOUT!!! but HCB is a classic... and he's honest... that's why maybe CR is a bit aggressive

  • Charlie Rose is really a disaster as an interviewer. Even Avedon, a personal friend, seems nervous while being interviewed by Rose. And HCB is clearly annoyed by almost every question.

Not even sure if this is worth watching.

  • Avedon doesn't need a camera on him or CR to "seem" nervous, and one of HCB's main characteristics is his temper and his impatience. He once said about himself: "no temper, no pictures...". And if you're open enough, this interview is a treasure for ány artist!

  • Never said Cartier-Bresson wasn't hermetic, but an interviewer with Rose's experience should know better. He's false and very presumptious. There's so much incommunication in this interview that it's almost unbearable.

BTW, I've seen Avedon MUCH calmer in other interviews.

    Cheers!

  • sorry, there's nothing that bothers me here. Just grateful to listen and learn. I guess it's true that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Peace.

  • BTW look at the last 5 minutes or so...they just enjoyed talking to eachother, at least that's what HCB says. Too bad you disagree.

  • its like the interviewer is interrogating him more than interviewing him. dummy. Poor old Henri Cartier-Bresson

  • The interviewer is totally inappropriate to conduct the discussion, yet this gives some funny moments. Funny how he sweating when Bresson was repeating he was an anarchist :D

A very humble, honest being, quite the opposite from what I was expecting. A great master

  • The interviewer is terrible!! What a waste!

  • This is the worst interview ever in art history. The questions are an insult to one of the finest photographer of our time. Obviously the questions reflect the level of maturity and knowledge in the subject matter.

  • why the hell is the journalist yelling?

  • what a stupid journalist...

  • Charlie Rose must be one of the most dumb interviewers ever.

What an idiot, to mess up such an opportunity, asking one idiotic question after another.

  • This Photographer is an incredible figure. Four of his photos did more for the world of Journalism than Charlie Rose in five years of his life. Far from perfect, but his vision to photography is just amazing. He was interviewed by the wrong person. What a shame. Still though, HCB is a true teacher and mentor.

  • Oh God... this Charlie Rose is an annoying motherfucka... If you guys want to see a good interview on Henri, look for "the impassioned eye"... right here on youtube. This interview is a pain in the ass.

  • It's not just Charlie Rose. Henri Cartier-Bresson was a handful for any interviewer and I'm surprised he even appeared on this show.

  • Have to admit I know nothing about photography. I stumbled on this trying to find a Youtube video on camera's. Taking shots for my sisters sons Bar mitzvahs. This guy Cartier/Bres was unbelievable. I have spent the last forty five minutes looking at different Youtube posts on him. Its funny never new who he was. Just incredible. Amazing eye...the detail....bravo Cartier

  • Thats funny crrlm8 I stumbled on this looking for jewelry for my wife. Have to agree with your sentiments. I'm originally from Lebanon. It's good to see our eyes see the same beauty.

  • enjoy its a wonderfull world, i live think and breath photography, one click, and you got a moment in time never ,again will it repeat

  • *or not of :D

  • c.r. dont or cant understand simple way of simple man like is hcb

  • "you always use 50mm lens camera? Not a lot of lens." HCB : "yes 50mm, it like this!" (framing in front of him with both hands)... Brillant!

  • This Charlie Rose bloke sure is a dopey looking prick - and extremely bloody annoying - old Henry is telling it like it is - photography is about sensitivity and instinct...composition is geometry - he is not being difficult or aloof...he is simply being honest...it is not a complicated subject. Listen and learn the simple facts from a master.

  • charlie Rose :is he sick?,taking drugs,ur just an asshole??

  • This interviewer is pissing me off!!

  • HCB is my hero.

  • yeh me 2 he was so cute!

  • HCB doesn't strike me as the person someone could sit and interview, but rather sit and chat to. CR should have rather sat down and shared a bottle of red wine with him and listened to him instead of asking "typical" interview questions. I'm sure HCB had some great stories to tell.

  • Why Cartier-Bresson consented to this interview is beyond me. He never gave interviews and seldom made comments

about his work. Charlie Rose means well, but is not in the

least informed about art and artists. Avedon, being an

artist himself, is given to emotional statements. To make

insulting remarks about him is just silly and insensitive.

In the larger world of art, Cartier-Bresson certainly stands

at the top. There is not a photographer alive who does

not admire him or learned from him.

  • I must say I didn't really like CR's interviewing style. His questions often seemed foolish. On the other hand HCB was very difficult and he obviously did not want to be interviewed. Maybe he was hoping for something more from CR. But I hate all this HCG is god nonsense. He was great at what he did and was very influential. But there's no need for this childish HCB is god commentary.

  • Cartier-Bresson doesn't seem difficult at all.

Poor man had to respond to the dumbest questions possible.

  • Not all the questions were dumb. And CR was more than likely genuinely interested in learning more about HCB. I love HCB's photographs too but I still think he would have been a difficult man to interview. I think he was probably the kind of guy who would be able to talk about photography and his ideas to friends and other people he respected.

  • HCB makes it sound like he never took a bad shot. Charlie Rose is a great interviewer and HCB doesn't make being interviewed easy. He prepared as much as possible for someone that is aloof and removed. Charlie tries to draw him out and all he gets is one word answers. Sometimes you have chemistry with your guest and sometimes you don't. In this case NOT!

  • charlie rose is a tool - to the extent where I didnt bother watching the rest of the interview because it was too painfull. He should of interviewed him rather then kiss his arse (ass) the whole time.

  • Great photographer. Terrible interviewer unfortunately.

  • A terrible interviewer? Are you people serious?

  • A terrible interviewer!

  • omg this is shit, BRESSON was and is my god in photography. this guy is asking shitty questions? I'd shoot him now.

  • undisputed... He was so amazing... There is a DVD about and with him...

  • Another terrrible job by Charlie Rose, embarrasing himself yet again with one of the greatest artists of our time. You don't have to look hard to see HCB squirming at his questions. Rose is as usual too pompous and preening to realise that he's making a complete ass of himself. What a shame that HCB chose to give the rarest of interviews with this schmuck.

  • Bill Moyers would have been a lot better for this, don't you think? Charlie is hit or miss, and this is, sadly, something of a miss.

Certainly not the way I would have approached Bresson.

  • jvan: Well let's see, he's old; he has what looks like a hearing aid; plus he's receiving questions in a language that, while he can speak it, is not his native tongue. I haven't seen Rose before, but I think you have to cut him some slack.

  • I have seen Rose before, unfortunately, and I find him to be frequently annoying: he's often patronizing, overbearing and constantly ill informed. He;s clearly the wrong choice for HCB. This is the interview equivalent of a thirteen year old boy trying to get a cat down from a tree by throwing stones at it. I won't bother spelling out who's who in that equation.

  • jvan: Still, how many other interviews of HCB are there on YT?

  • is there any way to find this interview writen in a text

    ?

i unfornetly find the sounds terribly unclear and im really curious to know better cartier bressons and his opinions:)

    tahnks
