Do you use a "Seame" or "Echo Max", or anything else that sounds an alarm if a radar paints you? Or are you confident that you're out of the shipping lanes? I just wonder how you are able to find time to sleep.
Mingming is an electronics-free zone. Sleep management is relative to position and traffic density - anything from 5 min to 1 hour at a time. The aim is always to get off soundings and away from shipping lanes and fishing grounds asap.
I guess this was your Jester Challenge trip. It seems a long way north for a basking shark, and why would if follow? It would have made me nervous - unless I was 100% certain it was a basking shark, as opposed to any other kind.
I've just done my first solo passage. I've gone in and out of my home port many times, but at last I've gone somewhere (and come back the next day). I'm not sure how I'd cope with the solitude that you endure.
