Say whatever you want about ole' Tom Carvel but he knew more about um, "effective advertising" than all of the college educated marketing majors will for a thousand years. And for a chain-type store the product they turned out was consistent and good everywhere. It's been ages and I can't forget...Flying Saucers...MMMmmmm
These ads bring back so many summertime memories. The first few times I played this clip I literally froze in my chair and just drifted off into yester year.
Catchy tune, great voice, just awesome.... thanks for posting this!!!
@skeilak no..carvel is still in business to this day..obviously not the hotline number but there are still carvel stores open. carvel cakes are still sold in a lot of supermarkets :)
@skeilak They've downsized most of the actual stores, i believe there's only about 500 in existance now. They mainly just distribute the cakes to supermarkets.
All the Carvel stores seemed to have disappeared by around the mid to late 80's, in my boyhood home, of Central New Jersey.
I can well remember, taking my "best girl" to the Carvel in Shrewsbury, on a hot Jersey afternoon, and eating our ice cream, while sitting and laughing, on the hood of my trusty '67 Chevy convertible.
Her, in her halter top and cut-off jeans. Me with long hair and Levis 501's...
@skeilak No, no, theyre still around, I meant to a degree, not as active though. Actually, in Elizabeth, NJ on Elmora Ave is a Carvel which has been there for years. And in Perth Amboy I'm remembering a Carvel on New Brunswick Ave. not sure if it's still there.
Good ol' Tom Carvel... Interesting fact, if you're old enough, and if you can find an original Carvel store, and if you can imagine a big pair of "golden arches" on either side of the little building... Yes. You'd have an original McDonald's Drive-In.
Carvel and McDonald's used the same architectural firm, and bought the same building. A big swirly ice cream cone on the roof, for Carvel, and the arches on the sides, for Mickie-D's.

What ever happened to them? And I really never understood the concept of an ice cream cake that didn't have cake

Hm.... the Cupid cake bears a strong resemblance to Fudgie the Whale turned on its tail. :)

PS: If you call 1-800-327-GIFT, you get a promo, for another number, a chat line, where you can meet, "Exciting local singles."
I'm pretty sure that Carvel went out of business, about 20 years ago.

@RetroGirl85 : Thanks for the update!
Funny you mentioned it, though. I was in the supermarket yesterday, and I happened to see, football-shaped Carvel brand ice cream cakes.
I haven't seen one of the retail stores in quite a while, though.

@RetroGirl85 : Really ?!?
Well, 500 retail stores is not exactly "small'.

Mr Carvel was real do it yourself guy. These commercials would not have been memorable without his voice overs.

Man, I miss those flying saucers (ice cream cookies to those who don't know), and I miss watching TV in the 80s.
