Hey dan, I just thought i'd like to point out to you that you should definitely soak your oats for a couple of hours before cooking them... because all grains contain phytic acid and untreated phytic acid can combine with calcium, magnesium, copper, iron especially zinc in the intestinal track and block their absorption. (taken from highonhealth if you google why do you soak your oats)
Recently the BBC had a 3 part series called "The Spice Trail with Kate Humble". Part 3 discusses Saffron in great detail. It's very interesting for those who want more info on the history of Saffron as well as Pepper, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cloves & Vanilla.
The best uses for Saffron here in Sweden are two things : Lussekatter and Saffron pancakes! Lussekatter are saffron buns traditionaly served at St lucia in Dec. The other treat is the special saffron pancakes that comes from Gotland, a big Swedish Island in the baltic sea. Search for "gotland saffron pancake" to find a recipe. They are Yummy! Finding saffron stateside was a little hassle, first store didn't even know what it was. Not even the manager. smile.
@kerberos623 Oh no! Well, there are actually a lot of spice shops online that you could order from, and maybe even save some money. Also, it would be worth looking to see if you have a co-op grocery store, which oven has really inexpensive prices on spices.
@danieldelaney oh I found it at Giant. I was just abit amused that no-one in the first store even knew what it was. ;-) Here in Sweden most supermarkets carry it. And our state pharmacy chain. ;-)
My favorite use for saffron is Risotto Milanese!
