Id trade in my Triton Studio for this if I could afford it, but I wonder if its worth it any more with some of the great VSTs you can get these days. I do like the idea of having everything onboard a dedicated piece of hardware rather than a computer though, and it looks and sounds great.
@PaulGT3 I find that hardware synthesizers sounds better than VSTs. This, including the large amount of things can go wrong when using a computer puts me off :P
@vithaj92 I dont know about sound better but its definitely more reliable. Saying that though I havent used an up to date hardware synth for a while, so Im a bit out of the loop with the hardware side. I personally would rather have the hardware like yourself, I just hope it can keep up with the massive sample libraries and processing power of a computer. Hardware would definitely be my choice for performing live just for reliability and ease of use.
@PaulGT3 I guess it depends on what you're playing as well. If you are into jazz fusion or progressive rock then you usually have more than one keyboard. And huge numbers of sounds (like 10 different sample libraries) are often not needed. But if you're let's say a techno guy who touches 3 keys in a whole song then I'd say the computer is a much cheaper way of getting the sounds you want.
@vithaj92 Yeah thats true at least in a live situation, although Im not really a 3 key player. Im more of a player than a programmer so I would always opt for actually playing notes over programming a single note on a synth or letting an arpegiator do everything. I havent played live for a while (something im hoping to change shortly), so for me recording music in a bedroom its a lot more convenient having everything in a computer, as I have the 88 key triton studio which is pretty big alone :)
@PaulGT3 Well, I don't think we can say more about that but to answer your first question: I would advise you to get something older than the Kronos if you're tight on money. Like maybe 2 keyboards, a kurzweil (older one, not top of the line)/Yamaha XS and a wavestation or something, that would also be almost half the price of the kronos for two rly great instruments. However, for the money the Kronos is giving you some extradoniary, it depends on what you play, genre, sound preference.
@vithaj92 Thanks for your advice but I will probably just keep what I have for now. Hopefully I will be able to afford some new toys in the none too distant future, but I could really do with things like a compressor and a nice reverb plugin/unit before anything else. With my triton, Ivory pianos and omnisphere I have a lot of options with sound variety anyway. Next time im looking though I will definitely take on board your advice, thanks. :)
@FireLinkAnime There was a bad batch of RH3 keys on the 73 and 88's and a software error that has been patched in the latest update. and the keybed problem is being looked into thoroughly. Not sure of any other problems.
@prototypep4 The main problem everyone will tell you:
Korg advertised this unit as containing a vst plugin/editor even before it's launch and even has links to download said editor. However, the editor doesn't exist. Also, muted layers in combi mode use polyphony even though you're not playing them. CX3 module distorts if you play high notes with a certain setting on and no drive at all. SST is not really seamless. The unit won't recognize 4Gb of RAM.
@mr4y There's no way to uninstall demo libraries like the Austrian Grand. Some units will overheat. You'll lost custom patches if you turn the unit off without saving as it won't ask if you want to save them.
These are not frequent issues. But shows that Korg is lacking something in the QC area. Kronos keyboard were lowered to behringer status. Some get working units, some will get the "lucky ones" that have various issues.
Also... the machine is VERY COMPLEX! It took four of us to figure out the rotary speaker. Never did find out how to change percussion on the organ and none of us could find the strumming effect on the ribbon for the guitar. We spent 30 minutes looking for the drawbars for the organs only to find out that they aren't on all organs, not even the ones labeled "drawbar organ 1". huh? I'll get the manual and try again I guess. Because the video looks really good.
I wish they would list the patch names in the video. I just went to the store thinking I would be leaving with one. Left disappointed. I play a lot of classic rock/blues and require very good vintage organs, pianos, EPs and Clavs. The organs sounded really bad. I saw on the screen in the video that the name of one of the organs was "custom perc organ sw1". Custom? Is that not a factory preset?
@susageman182 can you give me the exact product name of the device and maker, because I couldn't find anything on the mpc x. Also is there a separate bass drum and hi-hat device that he is operating with his feet?
@Muzik4lfe1 You could try a akai apc 20 or apc 40.... which are commonly used with ableton x and sorry i dont know of any foot switches but if you did someresearch you might find something
You can compare this to whatever you want, but if you don't have any talent it wont do you any good. Dunno about you, but I sure could use this instrument!
I may be a tad behind the times, but this seems be capable of replacing all six of the keyboards in my arsenal. However, the flavors of each synth run through a separate effectes modual provides a much more distinct color to each track that no workstation can muster. But for one keybord that does it all...this seems to edge out all of the competition in my view. For the one-man-band-dj gig...Korg has a VERY powerful tool here.
@PolsNegra LMFAO computer program vs a real instrument? Wow no talent in you thats for sure. And in case you weren't paying attention 3 engines in this is devoted to analog synth modeling. Analog is an old technology and if you want that vintage sound this thing delivers. Try looking to the past once and a while.
That is Korg, I owned Karama, extreme, M50, Triton studio, Usually all demo talks about Piano, memory, technology, Then when I saw Tyros 4, you know what, no comparison. The GE tech. prove useless, it will mess up the whole keyboard, and you can't play anything.Actually looks like the keyboard is playing you.Nothing better than a real Piano, this is a fact.People these days are more for a creative keyboard. Get some new samples Jee, show me something about Celtic music,
what?!?!? program a synthesizer!?! waste of time?!?!! screw them! i love synths more then keyboard>.> keyboard has just piano and al the existing sounds>.> i want new sounds, and with a synthesizer is possible to make totaly new sounds:(
hmmmmmm being a die hard roland fan and roland player for many years I must say the Kronos is giving me a major run for my money! I might have to invest on a kronos
after OASIS, and Radias, I thought Korg stopped developing real instruments and focus on toys instead, probably because of the attacks of powerful softsynths.
But this is such a huge revenge! It knocks out any softsynth on the market hands down! Beautiful!
Somone reckognise the chord progression of the second song? The one between about 5:00 and 13:00. I can't help but think I've heard it before ... Especially 5:57 - 6:08
Gotta say this sounds AWESOME, but the Analog modeling engines STILL seem FLAT... :( I wish it sounded better, I would be buying this instrument FAST! I don't buy synthesizers for PIANO sounds, if I wanted that I'd buy a piano... maybe when the new OS comes out it might change my mind. I will keep my Analog synths, V-synth & my Triton Extreme, they do what I want without all of the extras I will never use. I still love you, Korg. Put out a workstation with real ANALOG inside! I'd buy it!!
In fairness, the analog stuff sounds unflattering here but other examples online sound better. I don't understand everyone's fetish for pianos either but I guess Korg has a broad market to cater to.
And, whyyyyy the move to weighted keys on the midsize? I got my Extreme 76 BECAUSE the keys aren't weighted, same with the JX-10, T2, or any other midsize synth I've used. I need more than 60, so I guess time to save up and replace my 88-key controller. :P
This keyboard is indeed a huge step. Just for the fact that you can leave the RAM for a 30gb SSD to have the best quality in sounds this is a must-have. Musicians deserve it!
Now I have a question:
How easy is it for a blind person to opperate it, when certain functions are accessed via touch? Or, am I missing something?
@gridsleep - I believe the earthquake and tsunami in Japan has delayed production. Considering what the people in Japan are having to deal with right now, the least we can do is wait patiently.
I'd like to see a video of the DAW integration software. I'm sure Korg recognised that it was an important factor and I've seen Yamaha's and Kurzweill's, so how does Korg compare?
Ok, that was pretty amazing; but WHY do the synthetic choir/vocal elements still sound so rudimentary and fake? WHEN will we be able to type in lyrics and have a reasonably convincing vocal rendition of it as we play an artificial "singer" or a group of singers? with real-time control over various aspects of their "expressions" and "performance"?
When will we have specific singer emulations? It doesn´t seem that far fetched in terms of technology?
@PETURK I think if Korg had a team of people focusing solely on voice emulation it could be done. Maybe they already have one. But, look at business technology that's actually made specifically for turning written words into a human voice. Doesn't sound convincing at all. And that problem is much simpler. Add singing to the equation and it just gets more complex. The voice itself is just so complex. It would be a huge undertaking IMO.
The analog modeling part looks damn freaking interesting...I have to test myself but this is what Roland should have done in the JP 80. (at least remodeling old synths for loading in old sysex)
But is there square? I didn't hear shit about square. I'm fucking not buying shit unless it has some, it can have all the goddamn sequencers and extras and shit but it better have some goddamn fuckin good square or it's nothing to me
I don't know if that crazy - beast - keyboard/workstatiom whatever is it can kill MOTIF XF!! For me the King is Kronos ... I don't want to listen about other instruments exept KORG!! Yamaha's have plastic sound!! Korg's and Roland's have the warm one!! Kronos!! the best keyboard workstation ever built... of course from KORG!! !!!

Estoy enamorado del teclado Kronos, a la primera oportunidad que tenga me comprare el de 88 teclas, y muchas gracias por enviarme las novedades del Korg a mi correo. Wilman Saravia.
I have been a fan of Korg since the M1. I still own a 01R/W that needs a new internal battery. When Oasys was first announced, I really thought it was going to take keyboard workstations to a new level, but I felt it came up short. It was severely over priced, and Korg didn't listen to it's users and continue to develop and update it. I never owned an Oasys, but the fact that Korg dropped Oasys completely and released a whole new keyboard just seems like a slap in the face to it's users
Of course it's great playing. I'd still rather play a real acoustic grand. I'm more impressed withe David on the drum machine with his great finger chops and the way he's playing it!
Long time ago, many people like Jordan refused to play keyboards with rhythms (Arranger Keyboards).
Today, most demonstrations of this kind of workstations are performed exactly as an Arranger Keyboard, like Yamahas PSRs and Tyros, Roland E Series, Korg PA Series, etc.
Why these guys do not helped to develop this technology before?
We would have keyboards with more competitive prices today.
@u7club becouse arrangers suck you you want to play keyboard it must be analog like minimoog real hammond b-3 grand and upright piano electric piano clavinet pianet etc.
me enfada que siempre ponen el sonido de piano...no mamen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,traen como 1500 sonidos y usan siempre ese...nadie le va a llegar a un piano real...
This is amazing, but I use the pads on my M3-73 a lot for live performance, especially when I run out of keys for splits, which means I'll stick with the M3 for stage use. However, that wouldn't stop me from buying a Kronos if I had the money...
Neither M50 nor M3 reaches to Kronos quality needless to say..
I don't know Oasys, but every blogger who already played Kronos says this is way beyond any other synths in current market. I already bought one since I saw some web shopping mall is already out of stocks.
Thanks for the vid. I love it and will have one as soon as possible! My only dilemma is which size to go for, and where to get the cash from! I was going for a PS-60 and a Radias-R but now I am focusing on this beast.
Oh yes. For you wanting this unit just because of Karma, the Motif XF has Karma as well.

PETURK 10 months ago
@PETURK I think if Korg had a team of people focusing solely on voice emulation it could be done. Maybe they already have one. But, look at business technology that's actually made specifically for turning written words into a human voice. Doesn't sound convincing at all. And that problem is much simpler. Add singing to the equation and it just gets more complex. The voice itself is just so complex. It would be a huge undertaking IMO.

Better late than never.
Muitas Emoções!

Lovely keyboard, but so far beyond my PLAYING capabilities, i'm ashamed to say I'll never own one....
I'll stick with my older stuff.... This is clearly not aimed at me, so I enjoy watching rudess and others stretching it out!!! It is amazing....

This is amazing, but I use the pads on my M3-73 a lot for live performance, especially when I run out of keys for splits, which means I'll stick with the M3 for stage use. However, that wouldn't stop me from buying a Kronos if I had the money...

Jack is fucking hilarious to watch, the enthusiasm is awesome!
mcfatty007 1 year ago 20
Neither M50 nor M3 reaches to Kronos quality needless to say..
I don't know Oasys, but every blogger who already played Kronos says this is way beyond any other synths in current market. I already bought one since I saw some web shopping mall is already out of stocks.

Thanks for the vid. I love it and will have one as soon as possible! My only dilemma is which size to go for, and where to get the cash from! I was going for a PS-60 and a Radias-R but now I am focusing on this beast.
