I think that we need to come to terms with the fact the days when we ruled the world are over. The cost of wars alone is crushing and unsustainable, and emerging countries deserve a chance to rise as well-even when they don't agree with us. To those of you who take offense at an American speaking his mind, WHY? We are all entitled to an opinion, stop demonizing everyone who criticizes our country. We are not perfect and we need to talk about our problems.

The British Empire was ruled by educated practical men who knew that in reality Britain didnt rule the world: different colonies and protectorates were managed differently according to local circumstances, and for the express purpose of pro-British trade and security. @schulman1 I agree with all that you say except for the ending. The Pledge of Allegiance goes: "I pledge allegiance to the flag and the REPUBLIC for which it stands." The word democracy doesn't even appear in the Constitution or The Bill of Rights. Reason being is that democracies inevitably lead to Oligarchies; meaning power concentrated into the hands of a few - instead of spread across the country. "Overview of America", here on YouTube, explains this better than I have.

There is the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights and International Law, yet, there are some in govt that choose to have a different law and hold the US to a double-standard when it comes to dealing with foreign countries. US President can abuse his job, look at Nixon. It's not the first and last time it has happened. Was Vietnam a just war? Stone was right in portraying it the way it was.
