  • I have a 2003 Grand Am 3.4 GT, sometime the car will start and when it does it runs great and if I shut it off it will start again. It seems if i let sit all night it won’t start, go out few hours later it will start. I replaced the PCM,BCM (used from same car). The crank sensor, ignition switch, key switch. Checked the TPS (good). Bypassed the Passlock (no light on) when it doesn’t start it is firing and will run on starting fluid. I can hear the fuel pump kick in and pressure is good.

  • Does anyone know where the tachometer filter is located on the 1994 Pontiac Sunbird 3.1V6 ? I know it's schematic location but can't find it's actual location. It's either in the engine compartment or in the instrument cluster itself. I think '94 cars were different than previous years.....1994 being the last year for Sunbirds, of course.

  • My 1994 Pontiac Sunbird 3.1V6 with 190,000 miles had the fuel pres reg go bad. Pulled into gas station and filled tank. Got in to start engine and cranked but no start, no fire whatsoever...strong smell of gas. Turned out to be the pressure regulator.

  • I have 1999 buick century with 3.1 I have problem keep the engine idel if i raced it's ok but doesn't idel i saw 2 mesh hoses next to the ABS unit one is broken I like to know where other end is connected any one who knows abouted please commet about it thanks .

  • your video fixed my impala thanks man

  • Does it seem feasible that a FPR could fail, but not show as leaking. I pulled the hose off the top on my Dad's 02 Rendezvous 3400 - no signs of gas leaking there.

When it decides to start, it runs good. As soon as you put it in reverse - it stalls. You can start in N and put it in gear without stalling.

Has a new pump & filter and is getting good pressure at 52lbs. All fuses & relays are good. I also cleaned all the grounds & pos. connections.

Still very hard starting - cranks good.

  • Thank you for this video! We have been to the dealership and two separate mechanics that have all said different things, but you hit the nail on the head for us. Our car is showing ALL FOUR of those symptoms: Hard starting, poor fuel economy, stalling, and STRONG smell of gas from inside the car while driving. THANK YOU! Fixing it today!

  • Hi i have a 1988 Ford F-150 FI 5.8L windsor. When it starts and is in idle the RPMS are unsteady and sputters alot at first. It Also smells like gas when it is idleing. I was wondering if these are signs of a bad FPR. And if not what could it be?

  • ok, my car has hard starting, smells of gas while running and has a CEL code for a random misfire. there was a beer can full of gasoline in the intake hose right behond the MAF sensor. is it a faulty Fuel pressure regulator? 3.1L sfi

  • Good mechanic trying to help/teach. Thanks. Aitraining is a hater. Ford didn't I repeat DID NOT take a bailout. GM has paid back almost all of the money and they are BOTH still built by AMERICANS.

  • @phakit Ford may not have officially taken a 'bailout', but it would be inaccurate if anyone said they didn't get Billions from the gov't (us). They had the good timing of seeing the writing on the wall and getting some rather large loans before the lending industry and so much else went in the tank.

I'm glad to see GM is coming back strong and has paid off a large chunk of what was lent to them.

The Gov't is very much to blame for much of the lending and housing issues.

  • Fuck GM. they were basically nationalized with OUR tax money and now my neighbors are broke and can't pay their mortgage - they'd like a bailout too. F these guys. Everyone has bile for the banks but they actually paid th money back. GM and Ford r shitty car companies.

  • could the fpr cause the computer in my suburban to go out?

  • 1997 pontiac sunfire 2.2 ....i changed fuel injectors,fuel

regulator on the rail spark plugs, wires because the car was bogging

down. Now seems to be getting too much gas in the rail. no pressure

in the fuel regulator, it will not start, but it WILL start if i pull

the fuse for the fuel pump out and only run for 5 seconds. when i

put the fuse back it will not start when i pull the fuel regulator

out there is no pressure, gas comes gushing out of the rail.Could it be the fuel pump? HELP

  • i got a 91 camero that runs for about 15 mins then cuts off then wont start until i let cool down or spray ether into throttle body. what do you think it is. please help

  • i got a 91 camero that runs for about 15 mins then cuts off then wont start until i let cool down or spray ether into throttle body. what do you think it is. please help

  • Could you please tell me where exactly the hose connects from the top of the regulator?? i cant find help with this anywhere. on the exact same engine your showing.

  • hi, great video by the way. I have a lumina with the 3.4L and have had work done to try and eliminate my problem. When i start it in the morning it revs and goes down as if it want to stall but never does or rarely. runs really rich at first. then after driving it for a while maybe 30 min, it stop this. mechanic says its my fuel pump but i think its the regulator. what do you think? thanks

  • I have a 2002 Grand Am GT with the 3.4 L LA1 engine recently i have been noticed a raw fuel smell inside of the car almost like a fuel line is off also some day's after sitting for an extended period of time it will fire over but around 3500 RPM's the engine will misfire almost like it's loading up with the raw fuel smell also could this possibly be my FPR valve going bad ?

  • Thanks for the advice... My '99 malibu has a hard start, and often stalls, etc.

Question: would a potential leaky FPR contribute to an EVAP code (P0442)- low EVAP leak?

  • Hello GreatAutoHelp,...started the car this morning...getting a very slight of knocking noise. Released the pressure coming from the fuel feed, removed the fuel rail, and notice the #4 injector has some cracks at the spray tips. Would this cause the car to stumble at idle or hinder performance? Perhaps it is on its way out, that could be why this injector starting to crack...due to it not operating to its full potential...maybe i'm wrong. Can you please help? Thank you for your awesome videos!!!

  • what about a hesitation i think i have dirty injectors but not sure when i push on my gas pedal it s like nothing for a second then it goes good

  • I had the exact same problem on GMC truck (Vortec v8 323). I kept getting a P0304 (misfire on cylinder 4), and after switching coils, wires, injectors, compression test, vaccum test, I did the "10 second zero dollar" test on the Fuel Pressure Regulator. That is, pull the vacuum hose off, and look for gasoline. And sure enough, there it was. I believe that because the FPR was physically located near cylinder #4, that the excess fuel was drawn into that cylinder-I had a wet spark plug every time.

  • I have a 1991 3.1 v6 191LHO. Is my FPR permanently attached to the fuel rail.

I have a 91 firebird and was told to go to the junk yard and get one from a junk car.

That the FPR was part of the fuel rail and injectors..Cant i just get another FPR and injectors new? ANd re use the old fuel line? I really need some help and will take everything i can get..

    Thanks B

  • @Belinda9333 The FPR can be replaced seperately.

  • When I put gas in my car it will run good, then later the same day it will stall. I got two codes P0113 and P0305. Could my fuel pressure regulator be going bad or is it something else?

  • @ladyg42 P0305 is misfire in #5 for sure.

  • Hi I think I have a bad regulator but wanted to ask you.... I have 1989 camaro TPI it gives me problems to start the shop said it is hydrolocking with too much gas in a cylinder, I did notice that my oil pan overflows with oil and gasoline could I have a bad regulator or injector? please help

  • @SuperPimpProductions Yes could be a bad regulator or injector. Removing the fuel injector and looking for a leaking injector may be needed.

  • @SuperPimpProductions Either a bad pressure regulator, or more common on this engine is a stuck open fuel injector.

  • Thanks for the great info. Just wondering if this could be our problem. It will start early morning if I turn the ignition switch and allow it to pump, but once started the rest of the day, it is hard to start, without pushing the accelarator and then the engine revs up, I suppose from excess fuel in the area. What's the real problem?

  • Thanks for your videos and website on the gm engines. I was having trouble finding some of the part locations. I just changed the air filter on my 3.4 and what a pain, maybe you should post a vid of that, just getting the whole thing off and on was a pain and getting the tabs realigned at the bottom took me about 10 minutes, then of course I've never done one before!

  • @vla1572 Glad you found some good info.

  • i to have a bad fuel pressure regulator on a 22re and when the vacume line is hooked to it it runs like shit if NY AT ALL. how ever i also notice that the line to the return gas line is pooring out gas when u disconnect it with out the vacume line even bieng hooked up is that normal cause i dont seem to have lots of power and i know its running lean.

  • if i have a p1171 fuel system lean on acceleration when the regulator was already replaced should i replace fuel pump i have no way of testing pressure at this moment but the injectors are pulling constant current when i check with my Snap on MODIS

  • Can this also cause a P300 code, or Random Misfire?

  • Can this also cause a P300 code, or Random Misfire?

  • Can this also cause a P300 code, or Random Misfire?

  • Can this also cause a P300 code, or Random Misfire?

  • @PicAFlic Yes, it can. But usually stalling and running bad until it is cleared out.

  • The car will barely turn over, when it does, it almost immediately dies, but will jump a bit with I hit the gas. The fuel pump is practically brand new, could this be the regulator? There is no smell of fuel unless I really hit the gas to get it going.

  • @rotoryengine Yes, that is exactly what happens.

  • Hi,

Please make a video to replace a fuel pressure regulator for a 97 jeep wrangler with 4.0l I6..

My check engine light DOESN'T come on..

But the jeep is hard to start when cold.. Once I start it and then turn it off and restart right away or within a few minutes the jeep starts right up... Someone said it may be the Fuel pressure regulator...

    Please help.

    Thanks bunches!

  • I have a 96 Firebird 3800 series II in the shop with a no start condition, it coughs but plugs get raw gas before it will settle down to an idle, I don't have a scanner and it won't run to go to one. Could the FPR cause a no start/ rich condition? Very difficult to get to the fuel rail as this engine is kinda under the windshield, and a bear to work on. It ran rough before it died, replaced one coil pack, all plugs and wires, IAC, and crank sensor so far, tested the MAF, MAP sensor, please help?

  • @ushouldntjudgeme Yes, the FPR can cause this problem with your car.

  • i have a 3.1 chevy corsica.. its realy easy to start but it runs really rich,, no black smoke but my clothes have that gassy smell...kinda like a lawnmower carb getting too much gas,,, i took out the injectors and the fuel rail,,,,i dont know weather its the pressure reg or injectors?

  • The regulators diaphragm (Im assuming) on my 97 Cutlass ruptured, & was gushing fuel all over the back of the engine. Unfortunately I didnt toss in a lit pack of matches & shut the hood. Getting a standard wrench on a 3.1Ls FPR is an absolute night mare & lesson in patience.

  • @celtbrewer That is for sure.

  • do you have one for the 4.9 liter cadillac ?

  • i am doing this right now on a 1990 olds cutlass supreme and what a bitch it is, .got it all back togethet and it leaked fuel between rail and fpr.going to put in new o rings and try it again. its unbelievable the amount of stuff i have to take off to get to this part

  • i was wondering how to bleed the fuel pressure so i can take my regulator off

  • I got a 96 Bonneville that starts pretty hard when hot, iv just changed my MAF sensor that helped the misfire but when the engine heats up, its hard to start her up. I do smell fuel when stepping out but there's no fuel in the vacuum lines.... Can the FPR still be the issue??

    Thanks in advance

  • The fuel pressure regulator can still be the problem. There soes not need to be raw fuel in the vacuum line to cause a rich condition and hard start, just the vapors is enough.

  • @SY1WEK Yes, this may be your problem.

  • thanks a million, that confirms my exact thoughts... no how do i fix it? lol

  • and how do u fix it?

  • You know I gotta say thanks for the video. It helped me alot.

  • Glad to help. Come to our site for more great info.

  • whats ur website man, mail me asap

  • At least now I will get my $20 worth for the Haynes book for our Impala. This doesn't look that beastly to replace. Our car has the gas smell on and off ever since we bought it from the used car dealer. Thanks for the info. :-)
