We used Sony Vegas Pro and Sony Sound Forge.

Oh Expensive. What are the prices for them. And are they easy to operate.

Eh think Vegas is 600 euro and Sound Forge is about 200 euro (doesnt mean you have to pay that though ;) )Probaly isnt the best place to start. Practice with Windows Movie Maker then get it.
