This movie made me fall in love with Julia Roberts and hate Kirsten Dunst. Such great acting combined with a great story makes me appreciate college more.
Am I the only one that finds the last scene (her slideshow/speech) excruciatingly awkward? I agree with all the ideas/sentiments but something about it feels off... The halting speech, the fake chuckle, her husband's..... shirtsSLIDE!!!!! ugh. The acting seems really fake to me.
love this movie...anyone know where I can find the bit where katherine does the slide show, ie: A girdle to set you free, what does that even mean!? i need it for a school project!
@DerawndaCharlieHorse It's ironic that she says, "A girdle to set you free!" when girdles hold in all the frumpy parts we don't want to show and it gives us a narrow midsection.
Education and learning sets you free (at least it does for me), where as wearing something that makes you into "the ideal woman" only holds you back. I think the girdle symbolizes how bogged down women were in this era. They were seen as homemakers and only that. Julia Roberts' character wants more in life than that.
@JoJo12522 yeah, i got that...I meant more, where is the clip in which she makes the girdle exclamation. However, the project is long over with, and I did find what I was looking for.
I'ts sooooooooo great. I would love my school to schow this movie to all the students, so everyone starts thinking about what Katherine (Julia R.) says.
I think now this movie is really one of my favourites ^^
i noticed that throughout the movie, when every girl in the room is wearing peals, while Giselle is the only one who isnt, ever. It's like the pearls are a symbol of traditional thought.
How far we have come... divorce used to be Shocking and unacceptable, and now, its like people are getting divorces at the drop of a hat. Almost everyone i know has parents who are divorced! Crazy!
I still find it hard to imagine getting into a prestigious college like Wellesley, working your ass off studying for 4 years, getting a degree, when you just plan to get married, become a housewife, and not do anything with your degree anyway. Seems like a colossal waste of time, money and effort to me.
@LyndaHudson I know right?, but it really happened!!!, the degree was like...the curriculum for the marriage, "she studied art" "oh how lovely!, you have a nice wife"...kinfd of haha
@LyndaHudson Some women would even quit college to support their husbands going to college. IN my women's history class my teacher told us of one instance where a woman had a full scholarship for a psychology MAsters degree but she defeered it to get married, That gives me a heart attack.
@equilibrium0994 Women of the 1950s may not have realized how life would be for women now, but some of them certainly dreamed of it, and their dreams helped make it possible.
@RioMadeira Actually I knew a few 50s graduates, some from schools like Wellesley, who acted like this character and some worse. One took a trip around the world after graduation and before marriage; she couldn't wait to share how thrilled she was with all the spoons she had collected...not culture, spoons. :(
I must have seen this movie 5-6 times before. It's such a sweet feeling knowing what awaits the bitch character played by Kirsten Dunst. No sympathy from me.
i find it relly so interesting that kirsten dunst's chacracter in this movie is all about marriage and being a housewife being the only dream there should be, and then in "Strike" a move about a 1960's all-girls school, she plays the one who is against the "expected" dream of becoming a housewife and devoting your life to just finding a good husband. lol interesting casting
This movie is so good I don't understand why my friend said it was so boring she feel asleep during it...Her saying it was boring made me want to check this movie out and Im glad I did

What's up with julia stiles weird accent. It almost sounds like a mix between a New England/North Eastern and an English accent.

Betty seems to be a caricature of 50's ideals. I doubt even the most traditional girl at the time would say half the dumb shit she says.
