i only just read about this tragedy. I have a little sister close to your cousin's age. I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't believe in god but I think that just by making a video for peace you will make a difference. because people will watch it and think about it. some good is done in latasha's name. that's a good thing, and you're right.
I was so shocked when I saw the footage of what happened to her. Okay so she did hit the chick who ran the store but what teen wouldn't if they got grabbed up like that? I am so disgusted that someone can get they ass locked up for havin' a bag a weed on them but yet get away wtih taking the life of a child. I'm pretty sure if Latasha was white she wouldn't a acted that way. She was NOT in fear for her life because the girl walked away. She also LIED about being robbed. What a scum bag!
@CookieDoughBee -Right on,right on.Black people- let's love each other.Ihave not been the same, since this case.R.I.P Latasha. This case made me loose my innocence. It made me realize what a black life is worth in America.I have judged everything by this standard ever since.
i learned about little latasha from 2pac's music and i so sorry to hear of your familys loss the part of the story that made me sad was the fact she had the money in her had so so so sad r.i.p latasha and 2pac xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Straight bullshit...and the media used to have the nerve to call the OJ Simpson bullshit 'The crime of the Century'....fuck that shit....this is ridiculous.
@savion35...I hope you and your family are making it through this very difficult year. My prayers are with you and yours. Remember that not all people have good intentions, but whatever you are feeling now, turn it into something positive to honor your cousin and let everybody know just what type of person she was. Don't even worry about the racists and haters...hatred has always existed and will forever exist, so move beyond it or it will eat you alive! Peace and Blessings!
@chrissline77...Before you call someone dumb...the 20th anniversary of her death was this year! Anniversaries are tough. Do your math! Oh...and I'm a female, so I'm no one's son!
I also know what the judge said about SJD doing time and I do NOT agree with it, I still don't see why Du could not serve 18 months or so in PC lockup and I have researched this case heavily, which I *strongly* suggest to ANYONE who comments here - just because you have a computer doesn't mean you can effectively articulate on the particulars of this SAD, sad CASE. Elricck
I'm sorry about your aunt, and I hope your deeply religious and strong-willed grandmother is still alive today. Ms. Harlin had stated she hoped to go to law school, I would've loved to have had her as my classmate.
In fact the gun was altered to the point that even the slightest pull of the trigger would cause it to go off. Du was punched twice by Ms. Harlans, before Du threw a stool at her. She then pulled out the gun which went off. That was sad, real sad, over a stolen orange juice that was partially visible in her backpack. It wasn't worth it, if Ms. Harlans was stealing the orange juice (two eyewitnesses), it still wasn't worth her life, just let her take the damn thing.
@2013lawstudent I see you've ended you're account already. Why is that? Because you re-read the transcripts you keep directing everyone to, and learned that the two eyewitnesses said she WASN'T stealing?
I'm not saying what happened was not wrong, but there was fault on both sides as well as unusual circumstances. I'm guessing that since you would have a copy of the court transcript, you would know Du never fired a gun before and the gun she held was stolen by Main Street Crips from the Saugus store and significantly altered without their or the police (who recovered the weapon belonging to Du's husband) knowledge. The safety pin was gone and the trigger altered so that it would fire easily.
In the footnote of people v. du, it states that latasha had a hard life, including the violent death of her mother, a clean, attractively furnished three bedroom apartment, an honor student at Bret Hart Jr. High School, assistant cheerleader, drill team, a good athlete, active church members, and a former honor student. RIP Latasha, but before you criticize Judge Karlin, please read the case from an objective point of view, you may find some startling facts (altered gun, assault/battery).
everything happens for a reason under God, but im sorry your cousin had to be that sacrifice. you never know. your cousins death might have been Gods intentions to change you, and the world. and maybe youtube was made just for that reason.
God bless your cousin in heaven. and stop hating man. im sure you can't forget but endure and forget, and forgive. And my friend this is not the first time we see racial injustice. Im sorry your cousin had to be that sacrifice. God bless.
also , the detective who interrogate me in my first act, caught me in my second act with my co accused. out of nowhere he popped up, right before we headed for a scrap. GOD! im scared for shiet for this GOD. so yea....man..point is i believe no body that i know has the authority to tell me that GOD is watching cuz I already know that and felt that and cant deny it no more. coincidence twice in the same period of my life? point is yes. GOD is watching, surely no one has no rights to kill anybody.
and guess what man. i was going the wrong path too.. in toronto. GOD IS WATCHING I FEEL IT TO MY BONES why? because the judge that handled my case turned out to be my mothers customer.. and let me tell you. my mothers store and the court is at least 2 hours away. my mom realized she saw this man before, and so does he, and they realize where they seen each other. at my many longasss court sessions. and he asked how i am doing.. and i seen him. and showed him im not into that shiet no more. GOD!
so, your cousin showed the bottle put in in her bag bout the give money but women grabs her forcefully and the bottle your cousin gets pissed off acts street wise and gives her couple of blows womens pulls out gun and during this your cousin picks up the dropped bottle puts in on the counter but i think women throws it somewhere and your cousin walks away than she got shot. THIS WAS A RAGE MURDER. here in canada this is no exception you go to jAIL. yes gods watchin.
exactly man... 30 days of jail time for korean guy for dog abuse..and no jail time for korean women killing a black women when this black women picked up the Orange juice and gave it back to the korean women. This was pure hate towards black people by the korean and by the whole justice system, which at the time, dominated by the whites the caucasians. right? so. is a dogs life more important than the life of human being with a different colour and culture?
I think that Judge was completel unfair, and she shouldve been voted out of office,2 all these other bigots on here talking trash, ignore em,THEYRe just a bunch of demonic imps with no life.I went 2 some of theyre pages and most of em r devil worshipping demons.SO IGNORE THEM!! LATASHA RIP..POWER 2 THE PPL
Wow I cant believe how some people cant be open minded and not let their emotions dictate their words. Im not in support of Du or letting the fact that a child was killed obscure my opinion. In short it is my OPINION people that this was a tragic accident. I dont believe Du intended to kill Latasha. I think she made a very bad decision while scared and adrenaline charged. But not murder. However she did cause the death of Latasha by her own hand and the idiotic judge failed to uphold justice.
Would it heal if SJD got the death penalty? How is killing her healing you? The woman was terroroized, severely beaten, had a history of fear etc. the background does not support avenging Latashas death by killing SJD, at all.
@Elricck...I don't think the death penalty was an option for manslaughter (which she was charged with). She should have, at the very least, served time in prison. She took a live and got away with it. Latasha did not have a weapon and Soon Ja didn't have to grab a gun, since there was a baseball bat behind the counter. When anyone draws a gun on an UNARMED individual, legally, that means their intent is to KILL. That is a fact and that's why she should have served time in prison...
@JinaBean intent is to kill, so the cops who pointed their guns at my head in Reseda in 1992 intended to kill me? this is new ground for me or are trained individuals excluded from this doctrine / precept / what have you .. as far as a choice between a bat or a gun goes, and NOT to argue with you but if someone twice my size had just knocked me into next week and i couldn't see straight i would take the gun just like most anyone would .. you do understand what concussive type force is yes?
@Elricck For a matter of fact, this was brought up in the Sean Bell case in New York, where only one officer got fired and that was the one who shot almost three rounds WITHOUT stating his position. If a cop shoots an unarmed person, they go through a full investigation and, as of 2010, that includes a FEDERAL investigation by the FBI! For the record, if someone was kicking my ass, I would fake a pass out so they would stop...Street Smarts 101!
Simply put, even if I was permitted to carry a gun on me in public, if someone twice my size was kicking my behind, I would not pull out a weapon that the other person could easily snatch from me. I understand exactly what self defense is and there are times when it is necessary. Latasha had already backed off. All Soon Ja needed to do was put the gun down. Can't really argue video footage.
If Judge Karlin had been just a bit stiffer in her punishment of Soon Ja Du, maybe the Los Angeles riots would not have happened a year later. More people were upset about Latasha than Rodney King. There was no discrimination when it came to the riots--the whole rainbow participated in some way, shape or form! Guess we'll never really know, huh?!
@JinaBean i asked you if those cops intended to kill me, you did not yet answer that question, and about self-defense i've been there many times and i follow the reasonable man theory but only AWAP -as well as possible bcz when stuff is going down there isn't always time for calm forthought. Your tactics would not get good reviews from my SD instructor yet they may work for you -different strokes.
@Elricck I also have taken self defense classes--required in junior high AND high school, plus in college. All three of my instructors, all different, said that, unless you are a law enforcement officer, you are not EVEN ALLOWED to have a gun out in public, even if you have a permit (which I do). If you are stronger than your opponent, then you can tackle before using a weapon. If not, then you are not even supposed to fight. Of course, everyone's different. Never been in that sitch!
@JinaBean ...and thats what TRAUMA SJD was under at the time, the woman was incompetent enough that she did that, she was reckless but reckless *with mitigators* and that's what so many undereducated people do not get.
@Elricck The problem is that Judge Karlins' ruling only made the problem worse. It was an attempt to ease tensions between the Koreans and Blacks in South Central, but, in my honest opinion, only caused more tension that led to the L.A. riots a year later. Her death was senseless and I hope Judge Karlins' words ring true--that Soon Ja Du is going through this pain everyday for the rest of her life (if she's still alive). She tried to run during the Fed investigation (NYT)...
@JinaBean Agreed about Karlin's ruling in that aspect, but about Du running do we have a handle on Du's mens rea @ that time? the woman seems to have lost it from that fateful day onwards ... you do agree that intent as well as mens rea are critical factors?
@Elricck Her husband stated that they were trying to leave because they were being threatened. Um, just move to a different neighborhood if you are really that scared. MLK, Jr. didn't move until he had no choice because his home got destroyed. They tried to leave during a FEDERAL investigation, AFTER the ruling. To me, that's a little suspicious. However, she has to live with it and if Judge Karlin still agrees with her judgement from 20 years ago, then she has to live with it too!
Our legal system has alot wrong with it, but alot of these comments on this video are displaying a lack of knowledge, ignorance of the facts about this case. Facts about the true contexts, legal rules in play, local politics at the time, and so on. I lived in Van Nuys at the time of this tragic incident. I have no enjoyment that your cousin is dead and can echo the wise comments of Latoyawesome1993. I wonder what Dick Gregory had to say about this incident. Peace be upon you.
"This videotape, she [Judge Karlin] said, "shows very clearly a 5-foot-6, 156-pound adolescent beating, severely beating, a 50-year-old woman who is literally half her size, knocking that woman to the ground twice, and shows that woman reaching for a gun at a time the beating is still in progress."
Many lawyers and judges have come to Judge Karlin's defense, arguing that her leniency fell within the bounds of judicial discretion." - NYT 6/1/1992
@Elricck... I need to see that video because the security video shows that Latasha had put the juice on the counter prior to Soon Ja Du reaching for the gun. Latasha put the juice on the counter AFTER Soon Ja Du grabbed her and Latasha started beating her. That is why the jury found Soon Ja Du guilty. If Soon Ja Du reached for the gun while the beating was taken place, then Latasha would not have been shot in the back. The quote you took from the NYT was accurate...Judge Karlin was wrong!
@JinaBean on the key2daundeground video about the case, pay alot of attention to how the video looks @2:12 there you can see the video is AGAIN doctored, it skips and it cuts out the part [2 or 3 seconds??] we disagree on it's *there* when it SHOULD show the attack was still in progress and this is what Karlin is talking about. You need to see the pure video dear, people need truth to be able to see rightly i'm sure you agree.
@Elricck I was actually looking @:13 through @:27 of the video, the first view of the incident. There are no skips or cuts there. The quality is bad and one of the explanations is that their recording equipment was bad and outdated, which even the police said it was. My only question in this case would be who doctored the second view of the video? I do agree with you though, boo, about truth to be able to properly see what's in front of them!
@JinaBean ok, ok, SO can you say for sure when exactly Du *grabs* the gun in those frames :13 - :27? for the life of me i can't, i *can* say that she MAY already have the gun in handeven before :13, it's also very dark and distorted .. when it was on the news 10x a day back then i remember it being much more clear. If she did in fact have the gun in hand before :13 then Karlin "may" be right about "in progress attack". PEACE.
@Elricck Actually, this video never plays the complete footage of the incident, unfortunately. We miss when Soon Ja Du throws the stool at Latasha (the stool is by Latasha's crumpled body in the video). However, it looks like Soon Ja goes for the gun @2:11, after Latasha lets her go. It's right before the stool is thrown. The scuffle is done PRIOR to the stool incident. Again, we saw Latasha back up when Soon Ja brandished the gun, right?! Peace and Blessings!
@JinaBean mmm, thank you so much for being you here 2day and here's my final comment - in the first clip of the incident on the key2daunderground video Latasha and Du have their final physical clash at 0:19 ....IF Du has *definitely* already *grabbed* the gun and is struggling still with Latasha *then it corresponds* with what Karlin said in the NYT article about her ruling. I wish that dam dam gun was never in that store.
Fuck the Judge it will come back to her. I don't believe in forgiveness. I understand bro you want me to put my guns down but I never will and I am always at the gun range perfecting my shooting. I'm always armed and if I feel the slightest threat, oh well Im registered with the Cracker permit along with the dirty. So far I have yet to have a problem since I don't have a felony. So all you racist cats saying shit realize brothers like me are out there, find your white ass in the cold case.
Next year is the 20th anniversary of her death, right?! Why not hold memorials across the country and talk about the injustice? Have major political activists speak at these ceremonies.
The whole situation was foolish. Latasha should not have put the OJ in her bag and Soon Ja should have never reached for the gun. However, I do believe in karma and the principles of faith. At the end of the day, we are only man and we are never above HIM. We ALL have to answer to the Maker sometime!
@LolaLuvv Look you wack ass bitch, no one should have been shot down like that!!! Fuck you and that old ass bitch Soon Ja Du, hopefully she is dead now too that way she can eternally burn in hell. I wish I was in the store it would have been entirely different. Fucking dogs are treated better than black people in this country, thats why I kick the fuck outta them too!!
say bro i feel ya on dat i was down the street when it happen i lived on 88 pl not st i no longer stay in cali keep you heaed up tell your cousin vester wats up
And if someone grabs on you, wouldn't you retaliate? It's not a matter of what came first, the chicken or the egg. Soon Ja Du grabbed Latasha and she defend herself. She put the juice down and walked away. I am still wondering what threat was so heavily made when Latasha was walking away, sans OJ, with money in her hand (that she belonged to her) that Soon Ja had to grab a gun.
If Soon Ja had not touched the gun then none of this would have happened!
Yeah, and if the girl didn't put the OJ in the bag before she paid for it, there wouldn't have been confusion as to if she was stealing the juice or not.
People with common sense wouldn't put an item that wasn't purchased yet in their bag, even if they were going to pay for it. Would you go to the grocery store, decide to buy cereal, put the box in your bag, then pay for it? I would think not.
I know at other stores not to put something in my bag before paying for it! However, at bodegas and small convenience stores, you can do that, as long as the people know you and vice versa. I did it all the time when I lived in NYC (mainly Brooklyn and Queens) and it was usually soft drinks and chips, nothing like cereal because I go to a GROCERY store for that (just to answer your question).
Latasha Harlins had NOT walked OUT of the store before Soon Ja Du grabbed her.
Back in the 90s, there weren't a lot of rules and regulations for shoplifting in stores other than to catch people while in the store, and even then, only security guards and cops could do that.
Policies and procedures have changed for most retail stores since then (i.e. the shoplifters MUST be OUTSIDE of the store BEFORE apprehension). This was definitely a tragic situation and triggered high racial tensions in this country. It was an injustice that Soon Ja Du served no prison time. Life is
@JinaBean Obviously, Soon Ja Du and Latasha Harlins didn't know each other. That's why this incident occured.
So she shouldn't have put the OJ in her bag. I lived in Brooklyn as well, and I had enough sense as not to put my Cola in my bag before purchasing it.
Funny how you ASSume I am "ghetto" (I'm Christian, not Jewish) just because I mention Brooklyn and Queens. I was born and raised in a middle-class neighborhood in Indiana.
I mentioned in an earlier posting in Latasha knew Soon Ja Du's son, as he usually worked in the store during the morning time (Soon Ja rarely worked behind the counter).
Latasha walked in, grabbed the $1.79 OJ, walked away from the fridge, was grabbed by Soon Ja, punched her when she wouldn't let go, put the OJ on the counter (after it fell out of her OPENED bag) and walked away. Soon Ja grabbed the gun from under the counter AFTER the altercation was over.
No one has yet to answer WHY Soon Ja reached for the gun AFTER Latasha put the juice on the counter and walked away with her own money in hand.
@JinaBean Why do you assume that it was racism that caused Soon Ja Du to pull the trigger? It might have been, but it could have also been out of fear because she's a frail 51 year old women, and this teenager comes attacking her after she tugs at her sleeve.
Never said that racism had anything to do with it, although there was racial tension in that area of Los Angeles between the Koreans and Black-Americans (as documented numerous times from both sides of the fence).
Again, what fear could Soon Ja have when Latasha had her back turned and was LEAVING the store WITHOUT the $1.79 OJ. Really, kill someone over $1.79?! And people have the nerve to justify it?!
When I was a manager at a major gift retail chain, we had people doing the same thing constantly before they had to be told that we were a corporate store and was not part of their institution. I almost had to call the cops on a director of the facility because she didn't know the policies that she agreed to by way of signature. That is why many retailers have changed policies. I wasn't even allowed to tell her to put the items away or pay up until after she physically left the store!
Frail at 51, or did she have a disease that no one knew about. Betty White doesn't even look frail and she's 80 years old! Most people in their early 50s, no matter the skin color or sociological race, are considered "frail." She didn't tug her sleeve, if you saw the video. Soon Ja grabbed her arm and tugged it hard enough to be seen on the store's security cameras. Let more people speak on this, because I hate one-sided conversations...let that marinate!
@JinaBean Funny how you assume that I thought you were ghetto because you mentioned Brooklyn and Queens. Obviously you didn't read when I said that I lived in Brooklyn. Dumbass.
Yes, Latasha knew Soon Ja Du's son, but she didn't know Soon Ja Du.
I was just wondering why you would call me "ghetto"..."Well, all you ghetto people are the same..." is your quote from an earlier post. I guess you are called "Com00n Se0nse" because you can't hang with "Just Wright"!
Umm, I thought I said that. Not really hypocritical, but again never answered the question...where was the justification in pulling out the gun?
Just realized something...why didn't Soon Ja Du go to prison for perjury? She lied on the stand and it was proven. Also, the jury (consisted of Whites and Asians) found her guilty and thought she would get full punishment. Many jurors thought that Judge Karlin disrespected their vote as members of the jury.
BTW, confusion or no confusion, Latasha walked away, without the OJ, with her own money in her hand, before Soon Ja Du shot her in the back. Soon Ja Du claimed that after she shot her, she fainted. She also claimed that Latasha had stole money from the cash register. However, Latasha Harlins only had $2 in her hand, which would have covered the OJ.
When Latasha put the juice down and walked away, there was no reason for Soon Ja to grab a gun...THERE WAS NO THREAT!
@Elricck Check out the surveillance from "Latasha Harlins - Miscarriage of Justice." Watch very carefully...Latasha put her drink on the counter as Soon Ja went for the gun. Latasha was walking away as Soon Ja pulled the trigger (intentionally or unintentionally part of the debate). This was verified by Soon Ja's testimony. The gun was grabbed after the fight, not before or during.
@JinaBean Depends on our interpetation of when the interaction / threat ended. Are you saying it is an undisputed fact? Judge Karlin is quoted as saying the attack was in progress when SJD grabbed the gun, that makes your statement one that is refuting someone who had access to the facts of the case, maybe you are right but I need more info. Peace.
@Elricck The surveillance video was later screened after the trial. This was a huge factor as to why Ira Reiner did not like Judge Karlin's ruling. The transcripts of this trial are of public record. Gang violence was the scapegoat Soon Ja needed. Do some research on Latasha. From my understanding she was a good student and a quiet person with few friends. No gang affiliations whatsoever. Soon Ja was wrong for taking a life over some orange juice. ORANGE JUICE!
@JinaBean SJD was wrong, but there is more than OJ in play. I have been researching and I am not new to the case. Reiner is a known hack, cheat, and political back-stabber, anyone who researches him will see that clearly. The sentence was lenient but the death was not entirely or even mostly about the juice, that's where many are wrong. "What is true is true, but *the truth* is a process".
@Elricck I get what you are saying in terms of what really happened (not about the OJ). I just disagree with how you view it. We dig so much into subtext and what people are thinking. Unless you are Soon Ja Du or Latasha Harlins, you don't know what either were really thinking. We need to stop speaking for them and start speaking for us. After all is said and done, Soon Ja Du killed Latasha Harlins over a bottle of orange juice. No matter how deep the stereotypes go, a minor was killed!
@Elricck We can debate all day about Soon Ja Du's state of mind, or Latasha Harlins's state of mind. At the end of the day, their actions caused chaos within a community that needed more healing than pain.
My earlier comment stated that Soon Ja Du said that she grabbed the gun as Latasha put the juice down. IF Judge Karlin is quoted by stating otherwise, with all of her "facts", then something is definitely wrong with this picture.
@Elricck The NYT quote you used stated that Judge Karlin stated that Soon Ja Du reached for the gun while Latasha was beating her. In actuality, when you look at the video, Soon Ja reaches for the gun AFTER the altercation. She reaches for it while Latasha puts the orange juice on the counter. The two eyewitnesses confirmed that action in the video. That is why the jury found Soon Ja Du guilty of manslaughter. I believe people are upset with Judge Karlin because she reduced sentencing...
@savion35 Latasha Harlins was really your cousin? Dam man... As a Korean I apologize on Du's behalf. I never heard of this incident until today. In no way am I defending Du's action but I dam well know that she can't get a wink of sleep at night because of what she has done. That guilt will be with her forever. She probably has nightmares day and night wishing she could go back in time. Keep strong my friend and don't hate all koreans please.
@KoryoJin your the first korean i even met that hasnt tried to defend her,,,,,,,Most defend her at any cost and never accept any wrong doing from their community.
@savion35 Yes, because you won't be there with 20 of your friends holding spears. Your cousin died and that's fucked up, but guess what, she was commiting a crime, and that store owner had enough.
SaraJessicaKnowles,GAGAOOOHLALA, and every other racist lowlife bastard who has shit to say about my cousin and her hood; You can evaluate your life and you will see that you need help Mentally. My cousin is not a thief and i dare you to go to any black hood and say what you are saying in my comment box!!! And yes i do believe if some1 murders a child for any reason needs to die also. If it was your children i would feel the same way.
@savion35 thats mean bcause you shouldn't wish death on anything im catholic but i dont know what you are but at my church we believe that god forgives everyone and im sure mz. soon ja du is feeeling bad and i dont see how those comments were that racist they were slightly stereotyped but you seem to agree with wut their saying no offense
@Latoyawesome1993 "slightly stereotyped"?...you seem very intelligent so lets not bullshit...I was born and raised in the so called "hood" and i have also lived in the burbs...and let me tell you, as much theiving, drugs, and crime you and this Sara think is going on in the "hood"....its the same way in the suburbs...the only difference is the money...i know plenty hard working, loving, people who never stole a day in the life from the "hood"....so for you and the other closed minds cut it out!
You are People's Exhibit #1 as to my statement that all people who live in that area are low lifes, thieves, and no good, lazy criminals. SAVION35, your cousin was a thief; she stole orange juice. Get a dictionary, that is being a thief.
@SaraJessicaKnowles Agreed but I disagree at the same time. I don't think she meant to steal it, but she really should have waited until she bought the OJ until putting it in her bag. She didn't use common sense.
sarajessicaknowles, Bitch stop leaving these dumb ass messages about my cousin. She was never a theif or a low life. Do something good with your life like kill yourself and stay off my page you stupid dick sucking ass licking pussy eating bitch. Your mother is i bitch for having a slut like you.
@savion35 You dirty little faggot. And you act so ignorant in your video. I'm sorry about your cousin but you absolutely NO right whatsover to say that someone deserves a death penalty. You are no better than Ms. Soon Ja Du herself.
@savion35 Don't feed the haters, and don't stoop to their level. I'm assuming you were much younger 18 years ago when the trial proceedings occurred. I'm studying Ms. Harlan's case right now and it is sending chills down my spine. It's tragic, but don't let some cowards try to undermine Ms. Harlan's life, because even in the court transcripts it shows that she was an accomplished young woman who may have shown poor judgment that day but not enough so that it should cost her, her life.
@chrissline77 the incident started when Du mistakingly thought Harlins was stealing a bottle of orange juice, which she had put into her backpack with the top visible. A physical confrontation between the two then ensued when Du grabbed Latasha by her sweater before Du shot her as Harlins walked away from the incident. Harlins died with the two dollars she intended to pay for the orange juice in her hands. RIP :(
@chrissline77 YOU DIRTY BITCH! DO YOUR MOTHERFUCKIN RESEARCH HOE! THE GIRL WAS GOING TO PAY FOR THE JUICE! HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT A CHILD LIKE THAT! I SEE YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE! SO GO KILL YOURSELF YOU IGNORANT LOWLIFE PIECE OF SHIT!
She had it coming; just like all the low lifes in the area. She's a thief and needed to learn a lesson. People who live in that area don't know how to act like civilized human beings. If she learned to be respectful then this never would have happened.
I have no idea where you live, but in many areas with smaller convenient stores and bodegas (LA/NYC/Philly/Chicago), you can take items and put them in a bag and then put the money on the counter. I've done it numerous times and was never perceived as a thief (even though I am black) by anyone because I am an honest person and God is good.
She had the money in her hand, she wasn't a thief and if you really feel that way, then I guess you have it coming too...the Secret!
i cannot stop watching the tape its over an o.j as a store owner if a young woman would of done that i would have sad immeditly go ahead take it will pay for it just dont do it again sweety its a hot day i understand and that would of been it and every time she would have came in i would have grown a relationship with her as far as whats going on and do u need help in school you know the usual but as for soon she was wrong its her fault she could of just had 1.79 missing from her inventory SAD!!
Soon Ja Du, that $1.79 she thought was being stolen to her, was the whole world to her. VERY CHEAP! The little girl was gonna pay for it, the money was in her hand. FUCK SOON JA DO, shes about 70 years old now, her time is clicking and she better repent.
I complete agree with you. I'm also sorry for your lost... I'm glad that I brought this subject to everyone's attention because I think people seem to have forgotten what happened to her. This proves how unfair the justice system really is.
i only just read about this tragedy.

Remember that not all people have good intentions, but whatever you are feeling now, turn it into something positive to honor your cousin and let everybody know just what type of person she was. I also know what the judge said about SJD doing time and I do NOT agree with it, I still don't see why Du could not serve 18 months or so in PC lockup and I have researched this case heavily, which I *strongly* suggest to ANYONE who comments here - just because you have a computer doesn't mean you can effectively articulate on the particulars of this SAD, sad CASE. i completely understand ur anger and pain dude...
but i can't help but wonder why Latasha acted like that...
i mean if she was going to pay for the juice anyways why not hold it in her hand and walk up to the counter? why put it in her backpack?
furthermore, why would she punch the owner 3 times in the face when the owner attempted to snatch her backpack?
i would say that if only Latasha didn't struck the Korean lady, the outcome would've been very different...
RIP Latasha

I'm sorry about your aunt, and I hope your deeply religious and strong-willed grandmother is still alive today. Ms. Harlin had stated she hoped to go to law school, I would've loved to have had her as my classmate.
2013lawstudent 1 year ago
In fact the gun was altered to the point that even the slightest pull of the trigger would cause it to go off. Du was punched twice by Ms. Harlans, before Du threw a stool at her. She then pulled out the gun which went off. That was sad, real sad, over a stolen orange juice that was partially visible in her backpack. It wasn't worth it, if Ms. Harlans was stealing the orange juice (two eyewitnesses), it still wasn't worth her life, just let her take the damn thing.
2013lawstudent 1 year ago
@2013lawstudent I see you've ended you're account already. Why is that? Because you re-read the transcripts you keep directing everyone to, and learned that the two eyewitnesses said she WASN'T stealing?
NursingSoftware 1 year ago
I'm not saying what happened was not wrong, but there was fault on both sides as well as unusual circumstances. I'm guessing that since you would have a copy of the court transcript, you would know Du never fired a gun before and the gun she held was stolen by Main Street Crips from the Saugus store and significantly altered without their or the police (who recovered the weapon belonging to Du's husband) knowledge. The safety pin was gone and the trigger altered so that it would fire easily.
2013lawstudent 1 year ago
In the footnote of people v. du, it states that latasha had a hard life, including the violent death of her mother, a clean, attractively furnished three bedroom apartment, an honor student at Bret Hart Jr. High School, assistant cheerleader, drill team, a good athlete, active church members, and a former honor student. RIP Latasha, but before you criticize Judge Karlin, please read the case from an objective point of view, you may find some startling facts (altered gun, assault/battery).

Would it heal if SJD got the death penalty? How is killing her healing you? The woman was terroroized, severely beaten, had a history of fear etc. the background does not support avenging Latashas death by killing SJD, at all.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck...I don't think the death penalty was an option for manslaughter (which she was charged with). She should have, at the very least, served time in prison. She took a live and got away with it. Latasha did not have a weapon and Soon Ja didn't have to grab a gun, since there was a baseball bat behind the counter. When anyone draws a gun on an UNARMED individual, legally, that means their intent is to KILL. That is a fact and that's why she should have served time in prison...
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean intent is to kill, so the cops who pointed their guns at my head in Reseda in 1992 intended to kill me? this is new ground for me or are trained individuals excluded from this doctrine / precept / what have you .. as far as a choice between a bat or a gun goes, and NOT to argue with you but if someone twice my size had just knocked me into next week and i couldn't see straight i would take the gun just like most anyone would .. you do understand what concussive type force is yes?
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck For a matter of fact, this was brought up in the Sean Bell case in New York, where only one officer got fired and that was the one who shot almost three rounds WITHOUT stating his position. If a cop shoots an unarmed person, they go through a full investigation and, as of 2010, that includes a FEDERAL investigation by the FBI! For the record, if someone was kicking my ass, I would fake a pass out so they would stop...Street Smarts 101!
JinaBean 1 year ago
Simply put, even if I was permitted to carry a gun on me in public, if someone twice my size was kicking my behind, I would not pull out a weapon that the other person could easily snatch from me. I understand exactly what self defense is and there are times when it is necessary. Latasha had already backed off. All Soon Ja needed to do was put the gun down. Can't really argue video footage.
JinaBean 1 year ago
If Judge Karlin had been just a bit stiffer in her punishment of Soon Ja Du, maybe the Los Angeles riots would not have happened a year later. More people were upset about Latasha than Rodney King. There was no discrimination when it came to the riots--the whole rainbow participated in some way, shape or form! Guess we'll never really know, huh?!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean i asked you if those cops intended to kill me, you did not yet answer that question, and about self-defense i've been there many times and i follow the reasonable man theory but only AWAP -as well as possible bcz when stuff is going down there isn't always time for calm forthought. Your tactics would not get good reviews from my SD instructor yet they may work for you -different strokes.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck Yes, they did...I thought I stated that when I brought up the sean Bell case as an example. I guess I had to state it plainly. Sorry!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@Elricck I also have taken self defense classes--required in junior high AND high school, plus in college. All three of my instructors, all different, said that, unless you are a law enforcement officer, you are not EVEN ALLOWED to have a gun out in public, even if you have a permit (which I do). If you are stronger than your opponent, then you can tackle before using a weapon. If not, then you are not even supposed to fight. Of course, everyone's different. Never been in that sitch!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean ...and thats what TRAUMA SJD was under at the time, the woman was incompetent enough that she did that, she was reckless but reckless *with mitigators* and that's what so many undereducated people do not get.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck The problem is that Judge Karlins' ruling only made the problem worse. It was an attempt to ease tensions between the Koreans and Blacks in South Central, but, in my honest opinion, only caused more tension that led to the L.A. riots a year later. Her death was senseless and I hope Judge Karlins' words ring true--that Soon Ja Du is going through this pain everyday for the rest of her life (if she's still alive). She tried to run during the Fed investigation (NYT)...
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean Agreed about Karlin's ruling in that aspect, but about Du running do we have a handle on Du's mens rea @ that time? the woman seems to have lost it from that fateful day onwards ... you do agree that intent as well as mens rea are critical factors?
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck Her husband stated that they were trying to leave because they were being threatened. Um, just move to a different neighborhood if you are really that scared. MLK, Jr. didn't move until he had no choice because his home got destroyed. They tried to leave during a FEDERAL investigation, AFTER the ruling. To me, that's a little suspicious. However, she has to live with it and if Judge Karlin still agrees with her judgement from 20 years ago, then she has to live with it too!
JinaBean 1 year ago
Our legal system has alot wrong with it, but alot of these comments on this video are displaying a lack of knowledge, ignorance of the facts about this case. Facts about the true contexts, legal rules in play, local politics at the time, and so on. I lived in Van Nuys at the time of this tragic incident. I have no enjoyment that your cousin is dead and can echo the wise comments of Latoyawesome1993. I wonder what Dick Gregory had to say about this incident. Peace be upon you.
Elricck 1 year ago
"This videotape, she [Judge Karlin] said, "shows very clearly a 5-foot-6, 156-pound adolescent beating, severely beating, a 50-year-old woman who is literally half her size, knocking that woman to the ground twice, and shows that woman reaching for a gun at a time the beating is still in progress."
Many lawyers and judges have come to Judge Karlin's defense, arguing that her leniency fell within the bounds of judicial discretion." - NYT 6/1/1992
It's called the rule of law.
Elricck 1 year ago
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean on the key2daundeground video about the case, pay alot of attention to how the video looks @2:12 there you can see the video is AGAIN doctored, it skips and it cuts out the part [2 or 3 seconds??] we disagree on it's *there* when it SHOULD show the attack was still in progress and this is what Karlin is talking about. You need to see the pure video dear, people need truth to be able to see rightly i'm sure you agree.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck I was actually looking @:13 through @:27 of the video, the first view of the incident. There are no skips or cuts there. The quality is bad and one of the explanations is that their recording equipment was bad and outdated, which even the police said it was. My only question in this case would be who doctored the second view of the video? I do agree with you though, boo, about truth to be able to properly see what's in front of them!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean ok, ok, SO can you say for sure when exactly Du *grabs* the gun in those frames :13 - :27? for the life of me i can't, i *can* say that she MAY already have the gun in handeven before :13, it's also very dark and distorted .. when it was on the news 10x a day back then i remember it being much more clear. If she did in fact have the gun in hand before :13 then Karlin "may" be right about "in progress attack". PEACE.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck Actually, this video never plays the complete footage of the incident, unfortunately. We miss when Soon Ja Du throws the stool at Latasha (the stool is by Latasha's crumpled body in the video). However, it looks like Soon Ja goes for the gun @2:11, after Latasha lets her go. It's right before the stool is thrown. The scuffle is done PRIOR to the stool incident. Again, we saw Latasha back up when Soon Ja brandished the gun, right?! Peace and Blessings!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean mmm, thank you so much for being you here 2day and here's my final comment - in the first clip of the incident on the key2daunderground video Latasha and Du have their final physical clash at 0:19 ....IF Du has *definitely* already *grabbed* the gun and is struggling still with Latasha *then it corresponds* with what Karlin said in the NYT article about her ruling. I wish that dam dam gun was never in that store.
To Savion - thanks for hearing me out / PEACE!

Dadeedadadadee 1 year ago
@Dadeedadadadee
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean
LolaLuvv 1 year ago
@LolaLuvv
JinaBean 1 year ago
Back in the 90s, there weren't a lot of rules and regulations for shoplifting in stores other than to catch people while in the store, and even then, only security guards and cops could do that.
Policies and procedures have changed for most retail stores since then (i.e. the shoplifters MUST be OUTSIDE of the store BEFORE apprehension). This was definitely a tragic situation and triggered high racial tensions in this country. It was an injustice that Soon Ja Du served no prison time. Life is
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean Obviously, Soon Ja Du and Latasha Harlins didn't know each other. That's why this incident occured.
So she shouldn't have put the OJ in her bag. I lived in Brooklyn as well, and I had enough sense as not to put my Cola in my bag before purchasing it.
Well, all you ghetto people are the same...
Com00nSe0nse 1 year ago
@Com00nSe0nse
JinaBean 1 year ago
Latasha walked in, grabbed the $1.79 OJ, walked away from the fridge, was grabbed by Soon Ja, punched her when she wouldn't let go, put the OJ on the counter (after it fell out of her OPENED bag) and walked away. Soon Ja grabbed the gun from under the counter AFTER the altercation was over.
No one has yet to answer WHY Soon Ja reached for the gun AFTER Latasha put the juice on the counter and walked away with her own money in hand.
Racism does not equal justice!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean Why do you assume that it was racism that caused Soon Ja Du to pull the trigger? It might have been, but it could have also been out of fear because she's a frail 51 year old women, and this teenager comes attacking her after she tugs at her sleeve.
End of convo.
Com00nSe0nse 1 year ago
@Com00nSe0nse
JinaBean 1 year ago

JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean Funny how you assume that I thought you were ghetto because you mentioned Brooklyn and Queens. Obviously you didn't read when I said that I lived in Brooklyn. Dumbass.

Com00nSe0nse 1 year ago
@Com00nSe0nse
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean And I care about the races of the jury why...?
Well, that's what they thought. Others have different opinions.
Com00nSe0nse 1 year ago
@LolaLuvv
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean The gun was grabbed while the attack was still in progress.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck Check out the surveillance from "Latasha Harlins - Miscarriage of Justice." Watch very carefully...Latasha put her drink on the counter as Soon Ja went for the gun. Latasha was walking away as Soon Ja pulled the trigger (intentionally or unintentionally part of the debate). This was verified by Soon Ja's testimony. The gun was grabbed after the fight, not before or during.
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean Depends on our interpetation of when the interaction / threat ended. Are you saying it is an undisputed fact? Judge Karlin is quoted as saying the attack was in progress when SJD grabbed the gun, that makes your statement one that is refuting someone who had access to the facts of the case, maybe you are right but I need more info. Peace.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck The surveillance video was later screened after the trial. This was a huge factor as to why Ira Reiner did not like Judge Karlin's ruling. The transcripts of this trial are of public record. Gang violence was the scapegoat Soon Ja needed. Do some research on Latasha. From my understanding she was a good student and a quiet person with few friends. No gang affiliations whatsoever. Soon Ja was wrong for taking a life over some orange juice. ORANGE JUICE!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean SJD was wrong, but there is more than OJ in play. I have been researching and I am not new to the case. Reiner is a known hack, cheat, and political back-stabber, anyone who researches him will see that clearly. The sentence was lenient but the death was not entirely or even mostly about the juice, that's where many are wrong. "What is true is true, but *the truth* is a process".
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck I get what you are saying in terms of what really happened (not about the OJ). I just disagree with how you view it. We dig so much into subtext and what people are thinking. Unless you are Soon Ja Du or Latasha Harlins, you don't know what either were really thinking. We need to stop speaking for them and start speaking for us. After all is said and done, Soon Ja Du killed Latasha Harlins over a bottle of orange juice. No matter how deep the stereotypes go, a minor was killed!
JinaBean 1 year ago
@Elricck We can debate all day about Soon Ja Du's state of mind, or Latasha Harlins's state of mind. At the end of the day, their actions caused chaos within a community that needed more healing than pain.
My earlier comment stated that Soon Ja Du said that she grabbed the gun as Latasha put the juice down. IF Judge Karlin is quoted by stating otherwise, with all of her "facts", then something is definitely wrong with this picture.
JinaBean 1 year ago
@JinaBean I agree with you here, something is wrong. Truth. I don't know what is wrong but it is.
Elricck 1 year ago
@JinaBean hi, it's been a while and ok i'll float along with you on this but can i ask you to quote the testimony you are referring to.
Elricck 1 year ago
@Elricck The NYT quote you used stated that Judge Karlin stated that Soon Ja Du reached for the gun while Latasha was beating her. In actuality, when you look at the video, Soon Ja reaches for the gun AFTER the altercation. She reaches for it while Latasha puts the orange juice on the counter. The two eyewitnesses confirmed that action in the video. That is why the jury found Soon Ja Du guilty of manslaughter. I believe people are upset with Judge Karlin because she reduced sentencing...

Latoyawesome1993 1 year ago 2
@savion35 Latasha Harlins was really your cousin? Dam man... As a Korean I apologize on Du's behalf. I never heard of this incident until today. In no way am I defending Du's action but I dam well know that she can't get a wink of sleep at night because of what she has done. That guilt will be with her forever. She probably has nightmares day and night wishing she could go back in time. Keep strong my friend and don't hate all koreans please.

@KoryoJin your the first korean i even met that hasnt tried to defend her,,,,,,,Most defend her at any cost and never accept any wrong doing from their community.

@zinakan read all of the facts, and Karlin's line of reasoning. Here's the citation, 7 Cal.Rptr.2d 177.

@savion35 Yes, because you won't be there with 20 of your friends holding spears. Your cousin died and that's fucked up, but guess what, she was commiting a crime, and that store owner had enough.

You are People's Exhibit #1 as to my statement that all people who live in that area are low lifes, thieves, and no good, lazy criminals. SAVION35, your cousin was a thief; she stole orange juice. Get a dictionary, that is being a thief.
SaraJessicaKnowles 1 year ago
@SaraJessicaKnowles Agreed but I disagree at the same time. I don't think she meant to steal it, but she really should have waited until she bought the OJ until putting it in her bag. She didn't use common sense.
I agree about the first sentence though.

sarajessicaknowles, Bitch stop leaving these dumb ass messages about my cousin. She was never a theif or a low life. Do something good with your life like kill yourself and stay off my page you stupid dick sucking ass licking pussy eating bitch. Your mother is i bitch for having a slut like you.
savion35 1 year ago
@savion35 You dirty little faggot. And you act so ignorant in your video. I'm sorry about your cousin but you absolutely NO right whatsover to say that someone deserves a death penalty. You are no better than Ms. Soon Ja Du herself.
You are a hateful person who needs serious help.
GAGAOOHLALALA1 1 year ago

RIP :(
miamibabii77 11 months ago
@chrissline77 YOU DIRTY BITCH! DO YOUR MOTHERFUCKIN RESEARCH HOE! THE GIRL WAS GOING TO PAY FOR THE JUICE! HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT A CHILD LIKE THAT! I SEE YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE! SO GO KILL YOURSELF YOU IGNORANT LOWLIFE PIECE OF SHIT!
Anivre22 8 months ago
She had it coming; just like all the low lifes in the area. She's a thief and needed to learn a lesson. People who live in that area don't know how to act like civilized human beings. If she learned to be respectful then this never would have happened.

I have no idea where you live, but in many areas with smaller convenient stores and bodegas (LA/NYC/Philly/Chicago), you can take items and put them in a bag and then put the money on the counter. I've done it numerous times and was never perceived as a thief (even though I am black) by anyone because I am an honest person and God is good.
She had the money in her hand, she wasn't a thief and if you really feel that way, then I guess you have it coming too...the Secret!

i cannot stop watching the tape its over an o.j as a store owner if a young woman would of done that i would have sad immeditly go ahead take it will pay for it just dont do it again sweety its a hot day i understand and that would of been it and every time she would have came in i would have grown a relationship with her as far as whats going on and do u need help in school you know the usual but as for soon she was wrong its her fault she could of just had 1.79 missing from her inventory SAD!!
kierrawomanofgod 1 year ago
@kierrawomanofgod
That's stupid. I would have scolded her for being dumb and taken it back instead of killing her.
GAGAOOHLALALA1 1 year ago
That girl shouldn't have put the OJ in her bag until she paid for it, AND she shouldn't have hit the lady even though Soon Ja Du grabbed her first.
:( This is a sad incident, but it could have been prevented.
DinnerandShadowFag 2 years ago
Soon Ja Du, that $1.79 she thought was being stolen to her, was the whole world to her. VERY CHEAP! The little girl was gonna pay for it, the money was in her hand. FUCK SOON JA DO, shes about 70 years old now, her time is clicking and she better repent.

I complete agree with you. I'm also sorry for your lost... I'm glad that I brought this subject to everyone's attention because I think people seem to have forgotten what happened to her. This proves how unfair the justice system really is.
