My professor today told us that because of videos like this, people think that going under an overpass is a good thing to do in the case of a tornado, but it's actually the last thing you should do and most people would actually die because the overpass acts as kind of a wind tunnel and accelerates the tornadoes wind speed even more under the bridge

What they don't say is that it didnt reach F4 till 20 minutes after it crossed the bridge, it was a strong F1 when it crossed them.

@thinkofwhy tornado chasing and research has actually come a long way remember this was something like 20 years ago. Really back then they didn't know a lot about them. I'm sure they knew how they formed and what caused them but really they were pretty mysterious.

This is the infamous video that caused people everywhere to believe that it's safe to hide under a highway overpass in case of a tornado. In this case they were safe, but in other cases people have blocked traffic pulling over trying to get under the bridges. Also there is still debris that could be spun up under the bridge which can seriously injure or kill someone.
