This is a much bigger issue than just Texas A&M, or even all of higher education. Our policy decision process has been hijacked by "think" tanks, mostly to the Right of the political spectrum. Now there's even a private legislature service, almost exclusively to the Right of the spectrum, ALEC, writing laws that are passed with little or no change in many states.
This is the conservatives engaged in social engineering just as surely and seriously as was done by Stalin and Hitler. Rick Perry has a good deal in common with Stalin but one quote in particular from Uncle Joe comes to mind: "we don't want the people to have guns. Ideas are more powerful than guns. Why would we want the people to have ideas
I took a class with Dr. Grunlan back in 2008 just before graduating. He was an excellent professor then and his pursuit of excellence was apparent.. I hope the board of regents listens to his statements.
I am tired of Gov. Perry and his cronies meddling with Texas A&M. Former Students, rise up and throw these bums out of office. They are nothing but hacks.
I love my school, no... I LOVE MY SCHOOL. I just graduated from the best university in this country. I want to make sure that it is in the right hands. Ladies and gentleman, Texas A&M is a PREMIER university. We must keep it that way, us, the recent grads, the former students. The next generation of leaders. PLEASE, we MUST NOT let these puppets run OUR university. We must not let them run their own agenda. We must strive for the best. TEXAS AGGIES seek the best for all, not just a few.
I have only taken a short time to look at this issue currently at TAMU but from an objective point of view this seems to be a problem that is limited to employee vs. employer and needs to have student involvement. Build a website and tell students what is going on and let them lead the way. Tell us the problems, explain why it will devalue a TAMU education, and give us solutions. Students are the consumers for education let our money talk.
@TAMUStudent33 I understand what you're saying, but if you think of yourself as a consumer and not as a student, you are doing yourself a disservice. The attitude that a university is nothing but a provider of goods and services for paying customers is what's killing higher education in our nation today. When your professors have to worry more about who is evaluating them and when and how and why, it detracts from what they can give you and that's when it hurts you.
At 12:13 during the ovation they discuss throwing our the SLATE Program stating "we'll throw out the SLATE Program, but we don't want them to think they did it." That comment shows a complete disdain for the faculty.
As for those who have received the SLATE award, it's definitely not their fault they received something that was developed as a political tool. They deserve the recognition they received.
As a former student, I thank you for fighting your hardest to preserve the legacy that I depend on when I proudly tell others I graduated from Texas A&M University.
I agree with the sentiment here and am equally skeptical about any simplistic "solutions", but I hope the argument does not devolve into a pro-SLATE vs. anti-SLATE debate. As a humble former SLATE recipient, deserving or not, I cannot help but feel slightly alienated. I have the utmost respect for the teaching acumen of my colleagues who have also won the award, and I would be disappointed if their status was tarnished by the mere fact that they were duly recognized by receiving the award.

Have you heard the newest Aggie Joke? Rick Perry!!!
We ought to strip him of his degree, as apparently he didn't learn anything.

Wow, who hates education more than Republicans?
Nobody.
If they can mess with education there, they will mess with it anywhere.

I guess TAMUS Board of Regents is in the pocket on monied and hateful interests against education.

Thank you Dr. Grunlan for voicing the opinion of many. I wish the board would actually take your comments seriously.

Notice how the Trustee to the Chairman's left doesn't know what the Slate program is. That says it all right there!

Thank you Dr. Grunlan. Seriously, I want to have the Board of Regents locked away for being criminally irresponsible and corrupt.

Appointees such as Phil Adams are an example of why Aggies should hold Rick Perry in contempt.
