He has aged. There is pain and joy in his countenence. I am glad he is still performing and he is testament to the fact the he is still living. Heard this last night after not hearing it on over 20 years. A swoosh, of years, times and memories came running through me
great rendition,,he sings it well,he´s older and the song has matured like a great ol wine.my other favorite rendition is Barbara Streisand's version from Stony End
When I hear some music (80's Hair Bands come to mind...) I think I can write songs. Then I listen to stuff like this and others like Guy Clark, Dylan and realize that there are precious few who can really start with a blank page and create art...not just words.
@juiceman1965 im not missing anything, he sounds awful just like the pogues now sound awful, he doesnt sound as good as he used to and thats a fact, most people dont as they get older.
@MissCruciatus he doesnt sound awful, i was watching this thinkin he sounded good, i even like it better than the live versions i saw. the way his voice sounds now suits the song better i think with the lyrics the way they are i dunno. even if u dont like the way he sounds to say awful is a stretch. you are right though most people dont sing as well when they are older, and he prob cant hi the notes he used to but it still is good just different
@matt47forTED AMEN MATT! I think the exact same thing. I love this version. It has aged great like he has. I feel this song has more meaning now with his gravely voice than it did back in the day. This is a classic for sure.
I can't tell you how many times that I catch myself, listening to this song, as I wander around in the supermarket. We truly have the best of the best.
Also, I wonder if this is one of those folk-songs, that apex'd before Rock & Roll.
The reason for his trouble singing is because he was an alcoholic most of his life and he also had a throat disease. this man inspired to play guitar and write songs. live long lightfoot
This has to be one of the top "songwriters" songs of all time. Your comment shows a real lack of understanding. His voice is a lot weaker now, but the song itself stands strong.
This has to be my most favourite song ever written, I have had the pleasure to see Gord Three times, first time in the 60`s at the Riverboat & 70`s at Massey Hall & last at Jubily Aud. in Calgary 4 years ago & even though age has caught up with him, he`s still got it.
If You Could Read My Mind is one of his most personal songs, and is about the breakup of his first marriage - a theme he continued to use as late as 1982 (If You Could Read My Mind was written in 1969). He confirms this in the liner notes of his boxed set, Songbook, where he says, "A song about the failure of marriage."
I'm so glad to have lived through and can remember like it was yesterday the 60's and 70's. Back then the good still outweighed the bad. When I hear this song I can close my eyes and be overwhelmed with great memories of such a wonderful time in my life. I wouldn't trade it for anything! Thanks for posting
this song is about the way Gordie sings...any other singer would come out differently and all the emotions attached to the lyrics would probably be lost...
I love this song so much. I know a guy to whom I would like to say "if you read between the lines you will know that I am just trying to understand the feelings that you lack." Sob! So much feeling.
The way you touch hearts and souls is unbelievable. In our savage world, you appear to soothe the pain of those fortunate enough to listen to your voice. God bless you, Gordon.
call the dogs off, after hearing this ,it just puts todays music to shame. Quivering voice, great lyrics, just acoustic and still is about as polished as you can get.
I saw Gordon three times in concert between 1975 and 1995. The first and last, he was basically solo like this. He was amazing every time. What a poet, guitarist and singer!! I spent my youth listening over and over to both his albums and Joni Mitchell's. Ahhh, such talented Canadians. I thank them for all the pleasure they have given me in the last 30 years. AND thank you for uploading this to YouTube. Nancy López a.k.a Cybergata
Saw Gordon Lightfoot this past may 10, 2007 at the Harbor station in ST. John, New Brunswick Canada. Wanted to see him in 1983 at the same place, but never made it. He was superb and glad I finally had the chance to see him!
This vibe connects best to people with broken hearts. But, man, to write something this good, you've got to truly UNDERSTAND a broken heart. The lyrics to this song highly rival even the greatest classic poetry. At least that's what I think.
there is another version of this song posted by someone else , exact same venue , but it sounds bloody awful , this version sounds much better, they other one must've been a fake, check it out
Bob Dylan used to say he could listen to Gordon Lightfoot forever. I think most of us could especially in the 70's - his voice hasn't aged as well as some.
This the tale of a mutually painful breakup of a relationship between two lovers. It appears he walks away to allow her to have another lover thus "bringing out all the good things in me". The song sounds like poetry put to music making a literal translation puzzling. Gordon Lightfoot is so deep you need a submarine to keep up with him.
Well after some research, cause I've often wondered the same thing, it says that the song is about the break-up of his first marriage. I guess it's another one of those "Read between the lines" songs. Either way, still an amazing song.
