"...you end up losing the pot, because you're afraid; not because the clay couldn't do it or you couldn't do it." I like this quote! This is applicable to clay, art and a whole lot more than that, isn't it? Wise words, Tim.
what type of clay did you use? I read an article about how good and firm the clay was from laguna clay company called "big pot" and had to get a bag. When I did I could hardly center the clay it was sooooo firm. It was like trying to center dry clay!! However once I got that thing centered I had a 20" tall vase in a matter of minutes. That thing wouldn't have fallen over no matter what I did!
This bmix5 its a pretty soft mixed clay. I would be concerned with stiffer clay and damage you can do to wrists and shoulder joints. I bet you were sore and tired after centering that much clay, and anytime your sore your doing damage. some people throw only stiff clay, you just need to be careful. But you are right stiff clay can make larger work in a hurry. Tim
That is just a brent splash pan, it is on a frankensoldner. Throwing with stiffer clay... clay when you are pulling moves up because the clay underneath it does not allow it to move back down. the stiffer the clay the less it can push back down.
do you have info on how you got that splash pan to fit? I have a soldner wheel also and the pan it came with is very small and I have to put a towel on my left knee because of the water that rolls around and ends up on my leg. It sure would be nice to have a full brent pan that fits.
Have you tried putting it on backwards with the large side near you and the small side away? thats how mine fits. other than that there is a metal rim under the wheel head that could have been added separately but was on the original wheel when i had gotten it. I hope it is as easy as spinning it around.
I haven't purchased any splash pans yet, because I wasn't sure if it would fit or not, but if it's that easy I'll pick up one and give it a shot. Hopefully it will be that easy!
Thanks Tim i appreciate your posts. I am at the point where my pots are getting large like that....sometimes though when i push it out it gets REALLY wobbly. Any ideas?
practice. you may be trying to push out too much too quickly. you could also be pushing down. there are many ways to mess up if you have a video of you doing it I could help with a bit more accuracy.
golfr, usually when a pot gets wobbly from shaping, i usually assume that the clay is over saturated with water or slip. pull your cylinder, begin shaping, apply heat, continue shaping, apply more heat, finish shaping. Another important key to sturdy and smooth shaping is keeping your outside rib SOLID. make sure your move from bottom to top is one fluid and deliberate movement, not 8 little timid ones. you only need to heat a pot if u throw the walls less than an 1/8th inch thick or 25in tall
I dont like to criticize but yes, its kind of iffy. I mean, if it were me? i wouldve smashed that right after i looked at it away from the wheel. but, whatever demo pots are never anybodies best work.
It's ridiculous, I know, but I just watched this video again and still say exactly what I said the 1st time I posted. Cool video Tim! You are the man! Oh!, btw, why doesn't your youtube account show that you have newer videos than 5 months ago?
Okay....WHY IS THIS THING NOT COLLAPSING? It looks so thin and yet it is still sustaining itself. Can you tell I've crashed and burned a few times on this type of pot;) Any hints not mentioned?
I actually like that there was a chunk of clay on the bat as you worked. It helped my to see how fast you had the wheel turning. My teacher always tells me to slow the wheel down, now that I am starting to throw larger items :P
I hate to be the 3rd same comment in a row but.......
I was yelling at the monitor too when you said, "Ok, one more push from the inside". What was I yelling? I can't say here, but rest assured I was wondering..ahem..."what the heck are you talking about, one more push".
G.R.E.A.T. video Tim! You get like 18,000 cool points for doing that and the pot not falling over. You are the man.
ok, so everyone in my pottery class is impressed with japanesedollbiz and throwing all those teaware pieces off the hump, simon leach throwing on 2 different wheels at the same time, and hawkins and the goblet, but I like this one too. I was talking to the video saying "don't do it" with that last rib pass. Nice Job.
I tried earlier this day to throw a vase just like yours and failed. After seeing your demo I understand what my mistake was, hope tomorrow it'll be a victory. Thanks!
That is some really GUTSY pushing there! I would definitely be too chicken! Not to mention that my clay probably wouldn't let itself go so thin without slumping.
Ha! At the end, the pattern of wet/dry clay on your arm looks like a tribal tatoo!
So - do you leave it on the wheel to dry for a couple of days? How on earth do you turn it?
Most clays can stretch like this I havent thrown one that can't. I take them off the wheel right away. or leave them on the bat and take the bat off. you trim it like any other pot I make a chuck or I use a super chuck (video to come) and if I am really lazy I stick it in a bucket upside down.
Am I right in that grog sucks up more water than non-grog clay? I have some un-grogged and some with 2mm grog (very fine, doesn't really hurt, but not as nice to throw with). I also have some porcelain that I haven't dared to open yet!
i love your videos i'm a senior in high school and just started to throw about 5 months ago and am getting to sizes that my teachers haven't even been so watching this video helps me and gives me a lot of ideas and pointers so thanks!!!
I thought it was going to collapse the entire time. I'm trying to get a pot over 9 inches tall without buckling at the bottom lol. Nice job! Thanks.

can you explain what you mean how stiff clay makes bigger pots faster? and is that a brent wheel or just a brent splashpan?

makes sense thanks and is a "frankensolder" wheel just one of those electric soldner wheels? yours seems to have quite a bit of torque

A bucket! LOL! You'll have to show us that one too!
Could be that I (being a total amateur) use more water than you do to center, and thus end up with a weaker clay.
Marihani 3 years ago
That very well could be. use less water. ug,
timseepots 3 years ago
Less water - way more off center. I need to get my centering hands (ref. sea legs) before I try for something as big as this :-)

I try and throw it as thin as possible maybe a half inch at the bottom to a quarter inch above that.
