beautiful movie.. they should do more movie like this more often.God , The Great Spirit made man keeper of nature , not to destroy but be its caretaker..we have no respect for nature anymore that's why the wrath of nature has been on us floods, tsunamis, wildfire..let us think of our future generation before its too late.nature has given us enough subsistence but unfortunately not enough for man's greed..
@aVampireTear lol yea sorry, I thought this was the video I had heard it on. I forgot to delete that comment after I realized this wasn't the same one. I love your vid though. My favorite scene and beautifully portrayed :)
btw I found the song I was looking for. It's deep forest - lullaby (ambient mix) check it out.
Thank you so much for posting this!! Believe it or not-when I first watched this film on telly-I watched it continuously for a holiday weekend: each viewing focusing on different scenes and existential relevance to all-of-earth-living-throughout-time. Means so much finding these scenes here now as i have no idea where I put the video and things for me are characteristic of millions of fellow citizens in this survival climate. Thank You!!~{^_^}~
My favorite part of this movie is how the main character triumphs over the ages old belief that in order to be a chieftain, one must be a male. And in the process, she makes both that old tradition and a whale her b#tchez.
@themightycelestial - that was exactly the sticking point for me in Whale Rider - there have been and still are really politically powerful Maori chieftainesses, especially in the area where this movie was set, since way before European contact.
We are reading the short story of this for english but we are only aloud to read 1 chapter per lesson so you kind of forget what happens but its really good!! you should buy the book, its very worth while. i didnt think it would be my kind of this as im not into tribal foreign stuff - im more into real life dramas BUT i surprisingly enjoy it very much!!
I am thinking of going to nz to live, i think i should show this to my lovely other half, rather than once were warriors ,to show her the maori people.
The first time when I saw what happened at 3:16 I cried my eyes out.... this brave, giving little girl who could dig so deep and be so unselfish was amazing to me. She WAS Paikea at that point.
:: The music here, I didn't like - the version I have is different with more of the Lisa Gerard music that runs throughout the film. That music pushes a drama - but that scene doesn't need music like that to help it stir up drama in the hearts of the audience.
To know why she's doing that you need to see thw hole film, it's brilliant, one of my favourate, even researched their culture and how strong their beliefs are. Lovely video with some nice music. Where is it from?
