They are so cute!! I leave water out for the squirrels and chipmunks all day and it looked like something took a bath in it. Now I'm thinking it might have been one of the Raccoons. I just love watching them. But now I have more mouths to feed. Yikes!
@Ginnymo62 - Thanks! That wouldn't surprise me, raccoons are known for exploring in water, whether it's natural (like a stream) or not... I love watching them too! Kit season is my favorite time of year, it's extremely cool to see them grow up, even if I'm mostly just watching them on a motion-sensor camera.
We feed 2 different raccon families at my house and boy do they love cookies. They also like the cheap canned cat food. But it sure gets expensive when you are feeding about 15 wild cats, 3 possums and two raccoon families. Payment for it is simply watching them enjoy the food. At least we know they are safer knowing they won't go foraging for food and get killed on a highway somewhere. If only we could feed them all out there! Thank you for an awesome video.
You're welcome, thanks for the awesome comment! Raccoons are such amazing animals, I know exactly what you mean about the payment - just knowing they're enjoying it is a reward! It is expensive, but it pays off in other ways. I don't have raccoons of my own, but I feed "mine" at a friend's house - the most rewarding part of the year for me is when the kits come out for the first time! It would be nice if they could all be safe from traffic and trapping and all of that - at least some can!
Oh yeah? Ha! That's cool (of course, unless you don't *want* them living in the chimney!) I wish we had raccoons here, all of my raccoon vids are taped at a friend's house.
True, I have seen people feeding them before (actually, I would too if I had the chance to - :)) but that's true of a lot of animals. You throw kids into the equation, things just get a lot more intense! :)
I have a family of them that raid my backyard all the time. I use a squirt gun (it's a one-shot, but VERY powerful, especially at point blank range) on them all the time. They take it like pros ^_^.
Hehe... well, as long as you're just squirting them and not killing them, that's a good thing - :) There's got to be some reason they're coming back to your area though - do you have birdfeeders out? If there's food to be had, there's going to be a raccoon there usually!
*They* didn't, but a rainstorm that came about a week afterwards did! The funny thing about that is I bought a new mic to replace it, the very first night it was out, one of the kits came up to it and took a chunk out of it! :)
HAHAA sniffed the camera! Adorable! Argh their curiosity becomes so destructive sometimes but they're so cute you just don't want to do anything about it!
Exactly! I would rather see them play with it than run out and ruin the shot by grabbing the mic - :) Raccoons are so amazingly curious, and the kits are even more so!
They're an awesome family! In this shot, they're eating mainly cheerios (Honey-nut Cheerios), a Graham cracker or 2, and, of course... my microphone... :D
Definitely! Hehe... and that's cool about the mic - what's one mic to be able to see raccoon kits play! They didn't wreck the mic, but they did soak it pretty well! :)
This is really cute! Thanks for sending it my way. I love how you calmly just squeeze the water out of the mic like it's no big deal.
Now for my ignorance of electronics:
Could the Raccoon get shocked if it chewed through the wire of the mic? I can't imagine it would be much of a jolt if the answer is "yes." But my morbid sense of humor would find that funny... sorry. Naturally it's NOT funny when it happens to me, but I can respect people laughing at me, lol.
Hi! It's good to hear from ya! :) Hehe... I figured I could either just let them have it, or I could freak out and grab it from them... now who would take a toy away from playing coons? :)
I suppose there is a very remote possibility that they could get a small shock from it, but I highly doubt it - there's not that much power going to that cable, just a small MIC port on the camera and a small watch battery in the mic. I've touched the jack of the cable to my tongue before... no issues!
I never knew what raccoons sounded like underwater - until now! Great video: love the lighting and your camera setup. You went to a lot of trouble to do it right. Thanks for the great video!
You're welcome! I'm glad you liked it! I'm going to send you a message in a bit here that talks a little bit more about my setup. It takes quite a bit to get the shots of the coons that I get, mainly because I don't *live* where they are... :) The shot of the kits dunking the mic in the water is priceless - I thought "either I can go out there and stop them, or just accept that my mic's toast either way and let them have some fun with it" so I did! Kit season is the *best* time of the year!
Oh yeah? How is he doing lately? I haven't heard or seen much about him recently - :) You should catch him vocalizing some time! I looooooove raccoony vocalizations!
They definitely are! I love the chances I get to "camp" out where I tape my coons with the HD camera. It's not very often that I get the opportunity, but it's just so awesome to see them in higher-resolution, and to be able to see them there instead of *just* on tape! :) Plus, just being able to see the kits play around is awesome in itself! :)
Hehe... nope! :) I'm from PA - but I'm strange, I wear socks and sandals all year (I have my reasons), and shorts all year... so it can be 20º outside, I'm still in shorts... :)
Here in Seattle WA, its common to see people in sox, sandles and shorts in the winter. They even made a insurance commercial about it. Hey I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio area. A month before I left a redtail hawk landed in a fruit tree about 5 feet away from me. That was a rare moment.
Oh yeah? Hehe... I do it all the time, that's just my style... maybe I'm somehow from Seattle and don't know it... :) I'm closer to Cleveland than Seattle, but that's me - :) Have you seen my hawk video, where it eats a squirrel? That was an amazingly rare moment that I managed to capture! Hawks are very cool birds - not the most pretty thing when they're ripping apart something, but even that can be cool too, because you're getting to see them do what comes naturally! Very cool!
I see Hawks and Eagles here all the time. They favor the lamp posts over the freeways as a roosting spot, waiting for road kill. Unfortunately you find then dead along the roads because of that. I don't miss the weather you have back east, especially the deep cold! Burrr!
Hehe... I'm sure you don't! :) I don't see them very often - I love hawks, I would love to see more of them! I love watching hawks dine on their prey also (being a nature videographer, I like to see the hawks *being* hawks) although it kind of sucks that my hawk took one of my squirrels... :) I have never seen an eagle in the wild - I would love to see that too!
Me too! I absolutely love raccoon vocalizations! I caught 2 adults courting each other last weekend, THEY were chittering to each other! The funny thing about recording the kits chittering is I couldn't hear the video until I watched it back! I saw them dunk the mic in the water, and came back in from drying it out, then I played the file I captured, and lo and behold - raccoony noises!

So do I! Hehe... especially since it's been at about average 25º or so lately here! Thanks for the comment! I have a lot of HD videos I should probably re-release - the skunk one, my crow videos... I just wish I could overwrite the old video but keep the old comments and counts intact - YouTube hasn't set that feature up yet!
