Re: negative comments, misperceptions of this 'work, one's inability to muster the patience to honestly give it the time it requires to appreciate it, and the shallowness, and, the seeming vacuity that's found its pulpit:
The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think
it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason.
If you develop an ear for sounds that are musical it is like developing an ego. You begin to refuse sounds that are not musical and that way cut yourself off from a good deal of experience.
I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.
@LONGLOTTfilms I'm sorry, but Cage is an idiot and that's just mendacious bullshit. Humans react to music the way we do because that's how we are naturally inclined to react, music is not something one 'thinks' about to 'get', it's a completely unfree, natural psychological response. When people can't stand listening to Joanna Newsom, or any kind of cacaphony (like Cage, for one) it is because they are too sensitive and can not endure it. Hipsters sure love being different though.
The lyrics are so beautiful and moving. The song goes by too fast! I want to hold every line on my tongue and savour it. Surround myself in the wonder of the world with it.
This song makes me "dumbstruck with the sweetness of being" in picturing its imagery.

I cannot listen to her voice. It's just bad. And I managed to listen to Friday all the way through, with only minor ear damage. I'm sorry, indie kids, this is not good music.
@Freudianity It's not just about her voice. I'm a classically trained singer and I can admit that her voice is far from perfect and she wasn't singing healthily for a long time (she even developed nodes and couldn't sing, talk, or cry for 2 months!) but she has completely transformed her singing voice, and as beautiful as it still is, I personally miss the rough yet squeaky, heart-breaking quality it once had.
Beside the fact that I totally agree with you about the song, I don't stand the use of "faggot" and similar words as an insult, for the well deserved respect to homosexual people.
@MrMilieu well in my book your called a moral fag.. but you dont get it.. i really dont have a problem with men loving the cock or women loving the vag just because society says its not right.. im using the term to describe something lame and.. yeah lame is the word.. have a nice day. thnx for uploading such an awesome song. may your life be filled with friends beer pussy music and weed.. much much weed
@MrMilieu From my understanding, when people say "faggot" in that sense, they aren't trying to hurt homosexual people. It's just like calling someone a "douche". No one is trying to insult people who are legitimate douchebags nor are they trying to insult vaginal cleansing devices.
My point is that they're just words. When I jokingly call my brother a faggot, for example, the idea that a homosexual person may be insulted by it doesn't come to mind.
I understand what you're saying, but my approach to "words" is that they are not just that, they mean something, and sometimes the meaning perceived is different for people hearing them. I mean, it's unfair that terms like that have become "regular" in everyday language. Maybe my attitude is due to the fact that I grew and I live in a country where homofobes are implicitly allowed to do what they want. Beloved Italy....
@fukyous I see your point but it's the whole fact that it is indeed used as an insult that is shocking, not the intent of the person. It denotes a homophobic culture more thank marks the speaker as a homophobe. Thus, you can say, as I saw on a t-shirt : "Homophobia is gay".
Ultimately, both the people targeted by the word and the insult decide wether it's offensive or not, although I do agree that maybe the youtube comments are not the best place to fight for gay rights or to have a thin skin.
@fukyous That argument does not hold water, as there is no douche community within the states that are continuously subjected to discrimination; subjugation. "I just call my little brother a nigger, meaning he's dirty! not black!"... The idea that you can disassociate that word and compare it to "douche", well, that speaks volumes about how deeply embedded homophobia actually is in our society.
@fwoopah I'd say that it's more of society's fault for associating that word with homosexuals, and regarding it as an insult. Like the saying goes, "Words are just what you make of them". Here's an example of how that works:
Some Afro-Americans use "honky" and "cracker" to insult Caucasians. However, no one feels insulted by them. You see how even though they're regarded as insults, they just don't work? Now if only people could do the same with faggot...
@fukyous "Whites" don't suffer from an oppressive majority, they are the majority. That's the difference. Heterosexuals use the word to attribute feminine and undesireable qualities to a person. The idea that a word is just a word, that's a perspective from someone who has experienced the privileges of society. The way to change these tensions is NOT to flippantly use the word and ask others to disregard it. The way to change is through listening to others, how do THEY feel about it?

@Freudianity Try her newest album her voice changed because of vocal polyps from forcing herself to sing like this. It's far less abrasive to new listeners. try '81 in particular.
@Freudianity I know you said this 7 months ago, but your comment is just sad, man....Joanna, along with the other Indie artists have very true, fun, and passionate songs...In my opinion, Indie is better than Rebecca Black, Justin Beiber, and all the other Pop, Hip hop/Rap junk combined together..So i'm sorry, but, this IS music. :/
@WorldXKIZOation It's not the musical style. I didn't say what I said because LOL INDIE SUX BIEBER FOR LYFE, I said it because her voice actually grates on my ears. I can understand why someone would like it, and I respect their opinion. I simply ask in return that they do the same for me.
@Freudianity Dude, I wasn't really trying to get in a fight, and you're not trying to either. It was just one of my pointless rants going out onto public, also I didn't want to yell at you like;"LULZ, LIKE, YOU REALLY NEED TO GO TO HELLLLLLLL FAGGGGOOOTTT U SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111!!!!!!1" or that kinda pointless junk. But, Yeah, you're right i need to respect people taste. :P
I wish there were more witty lyrics as these! I can't describe how unique and quirky it is...there are not even many poems out there that has such distinct poetic voice. It kind of reminds me of a nonsense verse because of how whimsical and enchanting it is. I like it alot; very inspiring and heartwarming :)
