I'm avoiding relationships for the moment because my most current ex is a psycho. While dating him, though, I would send him the occasional note (typically, around finals) to keep his spirits up. I also did the same with long-distance, NZ guy except his was through email or phone call (Thanks to a friend for the internat'l phone card!) more for orchestra auditions, sailing competitions, and job hunts. I also left encouraging notes for my sorority sisters when I knew they were having tough times.
