  • it proves that Rob is a hell of bassist. It's a true shame that his bass is buried in the final mix...

Nobody is better than nobody here, each bassist had (and has) his own technique.

It's sad that Cliff is dead, but Rob undoubtly can fill his shoes. I hope that in their new album the bass gets the appropriate mix

  • 2:22 Cool

  • Jason Newsted dislike the video.

  • es muy genial o.o

  • robert trujillo is technically better than cliff, but cliff was musically better than rob

  • THAT. SOUNDED. KICK. ASS.

  • AAAAHHHH! This is one of the reasons Metallica is my least favorite big four band. Rob's bass sounds amazing here, but I listen to the album and I'm like "Where is it??" Barely audible. Oh well.

  • reminded me of faith no more

  • I nearly have this tone down with my rig, only thing Rob has a bit more "Clack" in his sound. Could be his strings or his technique, either way its an awesome sound.

  • @Evin07 adjust your action, but make sure you compensate your action with your truss rod

  • For all you knobs that say the Bass is inaudible on Death Magnetic..STFU and buy the fking original album, and a decent stereo, or head phones....you can hear the bass just fine on all the songs!!!

The mix was horrible on DM, it was by far the loudest album I've heard, but the Bass was Fking fine in relation to all the instruments!

stop being idiots, based on songs you head on Youtube, or download in low quality, and hear on your crappy speakers!

  • Both Cliff and Rob are AMAZING bass players, hands down, but Cliff dies so very young. He could've taken bass to so many higher levels with more years of playing. I'm not dissing Rob, because he's gifted with bass, but he has waaaay more years stacked on him comparing to Cliff. So in modern day, if Cliff was still around, I think he'd win this battle.

  • Rob is underrated, but awesome as hell!

  • If you think Rob is faster listen to the bass track of Disposable Heroes. Plus Cliff didnt have pro tools to work with.

  • Why's it matter who's "better." There is no "better" in music anyways, it's all preference so instead of a constant debate of who's "better" why not enjoy the music the band made with each player.

  • I had an eargasm.

  • I think Cliff's spirit took over Rob's body

  • @brettmarkusic Rob can play Orion perfectly, so yeah...

  • Robert Trujillo is technically better than Cliff. But keep in mind Rob has atleast 20 years of bass playing on Cliff Burton. Think about where Cliff would be skill-wise if he was still alive.

  • @mancleave yeah and I would still like to hear Rob pull of a solo in one of his songs he has recorded

  • @mancleave He has at least 20 because he is alive. If Cliff was alive the song and all their albums after Ride the Lightning would've been a lot more thrashier.

  • @FlyingFetusFaceFuck i am sorry that my comments to other people made you so upset to comment back to me. i am sorry i got you so upset. you have put me in place with your posts that i have changed my life to become less of a mega douche and less of an idiot. i thank you so much for your incitefull input and changing my life around. you are a god.

  • @FlyingFetusFaceFuck sorry to burst your bubble and get you all butthurt but the truth hurts eh?

  • Rob is very taleneted - makes you actually want to play bass.

  • Robs a fuckin beast man!

  • Bullshit!

  • wow this is really good bass track

  • Jason would never be able to do this song as good as rob

  • Bullshit. Jason would have been able to do it better. And Jason is better than Cliff too, Metallifanboy.

  • @TheMaoriGuy wooo wooo wooo wtf are u talking about u dont know shit!

  • @TheMaoriGuy you're trolling

  • his playing is very similar to cliffs, but i think cliff is slightly more aggressive since you can really hear the strings smacking cliffs bass

  • No, Rob is a better fingerstyle bass player than Cliff. Why? Because Cliff was sloppy as fuck. He was good, but his true talents were composition skills. He wasn't THAT good at bass

  • ummm no.... cliff is amuch better bassist than rob, if cliff was still alive he probably be at a further beyond level. Rob is better than cliff at slap style, not fingers. And the sloppy playing your referring to is aggression.

  • @stenback31289 Rob is way better than Cliff... i like him, but he was sloppy as fuck, and Rob is way more agressive. You go listen to KEA and MOP master bass tracks. C'mon people, stop with all this fan shit, take off your Cliff shirt, Rob is a hell of a bass player.

  • think like thease cliff died when he was 24 and rob has not died so he have more techical becuse he is not died

  • @manthisprog look at the recording process back then. metallica recorded those albums on a very cheap budget and on analog tracks. this album was a mutlemillion dollar recording process(which still came out bad) and have multi track cuts through pro tools. with this recording you can clearly hear rob playing with a pick at 4:26, rob's playing is just as sloppy as cliff's, but thicker because of a better recording.

  • @bigbobboi hes not using pick there -.-

  • @TheUllike he is using a pick there, sorry you cant hear the difference between a pick and finger play.

  • @TheUllike ok hear the difference at 4:26 then hear it at 4:44. if you cant tell which if fingers and which is a pick, then you need to readjust your ears.

  • @TheMaoriGuy That's probably because Cliff had only played around 10 years when he died and Rob have been playing for over twenty years (not sure how long, but longer than Cliff had). Think if Cliff was still alive, he would be a lot less sloppy, because he would have played for 20 more years.

  • i play guitar and drums. whats next? BASS OF COURSE. But i guess it will take some years before i'm going to buy

  • Love the part at 4:25.

Love it vibrating in my ears lol.

Blanks out the boring, depressing library behind me. :D

  • 4:25

  • Lol, imagine if he was doing that with his fingers

  • he is isnt he!?

  • pretty sure he was using a pick up at the end of it. He said he used a pick in most of the recording, but he fingers everything live. Rob's amazing, Cliff is amazing. God bless MEtallica. that bass is mean! my face is so melted right now!

  • @TheDer03 I'm not sure about the pick. The sound didn't change, it still sounds like fingerstyle as it isn't problem for him to play that fast.

  • @mijonja Yeah, he's using a pick. He used a pick in the recording of most songs on the album, but he fingers it live. It doesn't matter, though. It's still sick sounding, I love it! But in the recording of All NIghtmare Long, he uses a pick in certain parts. There'se a video on here, too.

But oh well, Trujillo is amazing with or without a pick.

  • \m/

  • Why the hell hire an amazing bass player like Rob Trujillo, and bury him so deep in the mix, you can't hear the bass! The bass should definitely have been audible in the album mix, it would have sounded a lot better if it had been! It was the same with Cliff, and Jason on the "Justice" album. You may as well have no bass player if you're going to mix them out of the album! Rob is a beast of a bass player!

  • Actually the bass is completly audioable on the DM-album. On my speakers at last

  • re-listen to a song like end of the line where his bass is tuned differently and it stands out more obviously... plus everyone knows DM was mixed shitty so its not like the pulled an ajfa

  • The production, as a whole, was a bit shifty by Metallica standards.

  • @AngelicStorm1 dude i think they re-mixed it and the bass is hearable.Look for the remastered songs, they have to be around here somewhere (sorry for my bad spelling xD)

  • @AngelicStorm1 It's what happens when you play behind Hetfield and Hammett. I hear what u are saying, but Cliff was never muted out, cmon.

  • @AngelicStorm1 listen to kill em all and master of puppets more carefully... Ride the lightning you really need an ear for, cliff is buried heavily in that album

  • @AngelicStorm1 I agree with that statement 100 percent. All metallica albums since Cliff's death have had no bass sound or very little, I think the Black Album you could actually hear a bass.

  • @AngelicStorm1 pulling a Justice i guess. old habits die hard :P

  • OMG!!!! Fucking Awesome!!!!

  • Can you do Cyanide bass please???

  • beast

  • If they remix/remaster Death Magnetic (as is much needed!) then the bass needs to be louder, because this is pretty cool.

  • trust me man, just because rob can play more than one genre means hes not to be listened to, it just means that he can put cool as shit into these songs, yes, funk has some cool ass shit in it i wont lie, listen to bootsy collins lol

  • lol then dont listen. simple as that.

  • gg man!

  • what, what i said about cliff liking stanley clark? he said it himself in an interview.

  • sounds groooooooooovy

  • yeah but suicide isnt funk is it

  • I respect rob more after hearing this

  • I know im gonna get hated on for saying this but I really dont know whos better him or cliff... I think maybe Rob.... as much as I hate to say it. Cliff knew way more theory though for sure. Rob I think is a little faster. Not sure, its a tough one.

  • I think you chose Rob because he has a more funky style to his playing, I really think that sounds awesome, my line-up is Cliff>Rob>Jason

Even though I listened to the Dyer's Eve bass track, I still think Rob is better because he plays that song with his vingers ;D

  • i think cliff was always wasted, though....wasnt he?

  • @utmindfreak I don't know if Cliff knew more theory. Rob's a beast and if you've seen the video of rob playing flamingo guitar you can see he spend some hours on his room studying the books haha!

  • @utmindfreak

Wrong, Rob definitely knows more theory behind the music than cliff did in his 20s, but Rob is much older than Cliff was at the time of the crash. Rob also extends way beyond just bass and pulls expertise from flamingo guitar as well, he is a very experienced musician, better than Cliff, however if he was still alive and actively had pursed more knowledge and skill he would probably be at least an equal but obviously you can't say for sure.

  • @Acrimonus cliff acually went to college on music theory. cliff taught james theory and harmonies. cliff was well versed at playing guitar as he wrote the intro to call of ktulu, the middle section of master of puppets, and the intro to fight fire with fire. rob in my opinion is a decent bass player, but he does not fit metallica jason was better. as for cliff, no will ever be like him and will be able to replace him in metallica.

  • @bigbobboi

Rob also went to school for music. He also has the advantage of having 25 more years to gain more experience. My comment merely stated that Rob would have more theory experience as he has had a lot more time to learn since Cliff's time was cut short. Rob is quite the player if you listen to some of his other stuff and not exclusively Egotallica where the bass is turned down excessively, very skilled player, better than Newstead (but Newstead is also very good).

  • @Acrimonus its not that rob would have, it is that he has more experience because well, cliff is dead. i know about robs other bands and know of his stuff, just nothing that really stands out for me. robs bass is acually pretty loud on the magnetic album, its just that rob has a shit load of low end on his bass that its what you can only at times, plus the recording in general was shitty, thanks to lars. imo, newsted fits way better than rob. newsted backup vocal also was the perfect match.

  • @utmindfreak both amazing bassists, but cliff was the better musician overall and i think that's why most people say cliff was better. that, or they are just ignorant fucks that know nothing outside of the first three albums.

  • @utmindfreak if thye're good enough for metallica they are good enough for me

  • @utmindfreak Cliff is definitely the better of the two. He played bass like Kirk plays guitar. However, Robert has that plucking style that is just so kick-ass, and he does play really fast. The way I see it, Rob's just a half step behind Cliff.

  • @utmindfreak to be honest i would pick rob, i know that cliff can play bass like a guitar but thats not the point of bass...at ALL while rob knows more technique such as flaminco and slap which is what a bass is ACTUALLY for and as far as regular finger picking goes you will notice rob actually is faster than cliff if you pay close attention to eachothers bass tracks for example on battery cliff mostly plays 8th notes while on this track rob is playing a good portion of 16th notes. (all imo)

  • @MetalliMagic the notes you play doesn't determine a better bass player, that is just cliff's preference. A lot of people who think Cliff is overrated don't realize the influence he had on the band. Cliff taught a lot of technique and music theory to James. He was a great composer. So he doesn't play a million mph, he said it himself, he's not trying to be something big and fancy. Cliff tends to follow the drums a set the rhythm like a true bassist, where rob and Jason follow rhythm

  • @stenback31289 Yeah, but I don't think you realize MANY other basses also of good music theory, for example there is Victor Wooten, or John Entwistle, but just because you know music theory doesn't make you a good bass player or guitar player or even a drum player, it just means you know good compisition and songwriting skills not how good you can play an instrument. I can respect that cliff knew how to wright songs, and turn them into something great, but that doesn't make him a great bassist.

  • @MetalliMagic Great examples of musicians, I do like them actually. Through Les Claypool in there too. Knowing music theory gives you a better understanding of instruments as a whole rather your own, so it makes composed materials go more smoothely. I can say for myself I have a better understanding of instruments rather than my own bass.

  • I hate how metal bands these days misue their bassist's tracks.

The bass track's volume is lowered so that the sound of the fingers or pick hitting the strings is drowned out by drums leaving only the low end frequencies, which are used to bolster the low end of the guitar.

  • they should make a song with rob like orion

  • suicide and redemption

  • thats right but more like orion with tons of distortion

  • but rob isnt a distortion bassist....hes a funk bassist

  • have u listen to this? he was a funk now hes a metal head

  • his style of playing is still funk

  • and it works. keep in mind cliff burton said that stanley clark was an inspiration.

  • i have a feeling he doesnt write the music...so wouldnt his sound change according to the song? his STYLE is flamenco...the way he plays with his fingers...like Geddy Lee (also flamenco)...and since metallica isnt funk, his sound isnt funk...when he does shit off the top of his head it is very funky, though :)

  • funk distortion is called fuzz...deeper, more rich distorted tone...

  • When you hear this, you can't say more than Rob is a great bass player!!!

I can't understand why James, Lars & Kirk has chosen Jason, he is a great performer on stage and his headbanging is magnificent, but his pick bass playing...

  • I love the distortion.

  • this is like one of my fav songs from death magnetic....and omfg i love how the bass sounds :PPP

  • Dang, this has a very Cliff-like sound to it.

  • Rob Trujillo is way better than jason but jason got a better feel than Rob Trujillo

  • CROSS...THAT...LINE!

That bass part is badass there.

  • damn FAST!!!! GO ROB TRU !!!!

  • God that's a heavy bass tone!

  • thats the fifth string...mmm...low B :)

and the tuning...unless its standard...sounds lower, though

  • Sound's better than any of the Cliff or Jason one's that i've heard.

  • That's because everything is so digital now a days. They didn't have that luxury back in those days. Cliff was amazing 26 years ago.... Imagine if he was alive and how much he progressed.

  • well then i guess u havent heard any of their stuff

  • Rob kick ass

  • Rob Trujillo could destroy your ass. You shut your face.

  • Actually his bass was pretty audible on the album. It could've been louder, but that's the same for the bass on all Metallica albums. Besides that, why hate on this bass line? What's so bad about it? It's pretty tied on for the beat and has it's own fills here and there.
