JJ Abrams, also, liked The Original Twilight Zone tv series because Rod Serling came out & gave you a back story on the character before the crap hit the fan.
Karl Urban is a huge Star Trek TOS fan.
I agree with you that this film was a terrible 'Star Trek film'. It's not about unity and overcoming human frailty to reach out to others.
Great film by itself, but not an homage to Star Trek TOS.
Star Trek hasn't really been that great cinematically for 25+ years. Yeah, the effects have always been good, but they have always had something wrong with them. I as a Star Wars fan can empathize, I have seen my beloved Star Wars tarnish heavily for 13 years.
well to see detail(slow-mo) well when the captain leaves the bridge, gets into the turbo-lift IT IS GOING DOWN! the camera pans down, this would put him in the engine, the shuttle bay is above the level of the bridge of the kelvin!
Yep agree with this review. Okay action film. But there are no themes in this movie. The best Trek films dealt with issues and thoughts. Wrath Of Khan with aging and mortality and Country with a prejudice Kirk coping with a world where his lifelong enemies are now his allies. Great films. This one pretty to look at, but (for me anyway) no soul
Man i am a serious Trekker constantly having to Star Trek against groups of lucas hounds who are my friends and this movie helped me so much. I love this movie and all my friebnds agreed it was a much better movie than Star Wars episode 3
Well the one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb, Was the fact that i could tell part of the movie was filmed in a brewery!!!! -- i known in a working Brewery etc. you are limited w/ what you can do
But come on!!
the "price scaners on the bridge" between the Helm and Nav "price check on the bridge" and other set dressing that was Bad very Bad the set 2.4 (out of ten)
acting 8 story 2 plot 2 this is action not Star Trek
I know that sucked. It was so unrealistic that I couldn't help but think, Oh geez the same factory set I've seen a zillion times. It in no way made you feel like you were in the Enterprise engine room. It seemed so thrown together, I really didn't like the movie, the storyline sucked and I as an original fan will just pretend it never happened.
"Wrath of Khan" was about both life and death. The Genesis Project was entirely about creating life. Trying to create new worlds that could be used to help us study and learn about the evolution of life. Though Khan is obsessed with revenge, and Spock dies, the fact that they leave him on the Genesis planet at the end is to give him the opportunity to begin life again.
Keep in mind that this is not the Kirk that old Spock knew nor is himself younger he was doing what Kirk was doing with Evil Spock making a world a better place for that world. JJ Abrams said that this is for fans and non fans if you do it just to please you than no one will see it and your franchise will die like it did with Insurection and Nemisis.
I know it doesn't have the make the world a better place I am not a hard core trek fan but I am one I've watched TOS, VOY, TNG, some DS9 and ENTERPRISE. I understand ur anger toward the movie. But we have to agree this is another universe very much so in Mirror, Mirror with the ISS Entreprise and other alternate universes in the ST world.
Thank you for that review. Beforehand I couldnt understand why so many Trek fans were down on this film.
The film was about the coming together of the original characters and their relationships - which it achieved well. And why stick to a formula? They obviously made a decent film without it.
Maybe this new film will start a new generation of trek fans.
Thanks! This is the most factual, thought out review I have seen yet. You express my opinion of this movie exactly! Good to see there are some people out there that remember what Trek is all about.
I hated the movie. I was literally disgusted. The sets sucked, the storyline was weak. The timeline even before the story didn't jive. Pike and Spock were on the Enterprise long before Kirk, so Kirk couldn't be of age when the ship was commissioned. The set for the engine room wouldn't even fit into the real Enterprise. The bridge was cheasier than the original series. The villian Nero character was stupid, the whole story was simple and ended up being a dud. I hope we all just forget it.
Is't cheesy sometimes good? Thats what helped the origanal series a lot . Sometimes you just need a typical villian to hate. Stop bad mouthing a good film.
Personally I didn't like how Nero addresses Captain Pike on the view screen, it just sounds like hes not even trying to be remotely villainous, its a joke. Theres a scene where Kirk is on a planet reciting a law on the treatment of prisoners aboard a starship, and is interrupted by a stampeding creature coming right at him, turning into a chase scene just to re affirm itself as an action movie as if we didn't already get that. I felt like the characters didn't act like Starfleet officers really.
i'm a huge trek fan and i LOVED it (full discl, i also worked on it). agreed, ST at its best was full of optimism. but the movies often relied on more trad action themes. ST11 was def an action film, but it also got us invested in the characters. that established, i hope JJ explores roddenberry ideals in the next film. we're at the start here. that gives JJ an opportunity to rebuild the federation and present its vision to a new audience. it just may take a couple movies to get there.
oh yeah, and thanks for the tip on the comics, i'll def check them out. i'd be curious to hear your comments on my take of the film (i review it on my channel). thanks for your vid!!
So all the "pot hole" of "Time Line Flaw" you all say there is (i.e. the destruction of vulcan) dont matter....this movie is a restart set in an alternet universe time line its not the first time writers played with the idea of an alternet univere ..... just happens that this and future films will be set in the new universe and events will unfold diffrently from the previously done films and multi TV shows
Ya I guess now they have the ability to somehow bring the two universes together if they so choose. So technically Vulcan still exists and I'm sure Spock realized that. He's smart and now there are two of him so I'm sure they can come up with something.
I think that's what the point of this movie is, to make you think about how Spock can restore his home world in this alternate reality why also letting us get to know the crew of the Enterprise.
the focus has mostly been on Spock. So they pretty much held true to Star Trek in that area.
Overall they can go anywhere with a sequel and I really believe they will tie it together in a way that makes this movie look like Star Trek the original compared to Wrath of Khan.
Before i start im a trekker also......The Movie isnt really a prequal its a restart of the universe if you listen to the ICE cave scene between young kirk and old spock...you hear him imply that he didnt just travel back in time but crossed over into another parallel universe BECAUSE of the events he cause when Nero and his ship crosses over in time AND space
So, just a quick question (well maybe not THAT quick). You mentioned that you would give the movie a C+ or B- and you listed all these good things about the movie but nothing bad about the movie itself. You did list things that were not faithful to the original, but that shouldn't be a factor in making the rating adverage. So, other than the fact that it doesn't bring the same message as the other Star Treks, what else did you find problems with it that made it just your adverage movie?
A lot of the film felt like it was made to be a Vin Diesel movie or something (i.e. The Beastie Boys music, the muscle car, the constant breast shots, the cookie-cutter villain with tribal tattoos and trench coat.) It felt very much like you're average Hollywood action movie. I think that's what J.J. was going for though. It was made to give the audience something familiar (along with familiar characters.) It was more polished than creative for my tastes.
hey man you should tune into our radio show, we are going to do a review on this on the 21st. i agree with you man! HUGE trekkies here. anyways check out my channel as well! hope you listen to the radio show, we could use you to call in and give you input!

It would've been really stupid if they had right off the bat, knew everything that was right. Like someone else said below, they're new. There's no way they would have the principles of someone more seasoned. They're young and inexperienced, so its not surprising they were driven by revenge. What did you expect?
Amen brother! My feelings exactly. went in vary hopefull, came out vary disappointed. the actors were fine but the plot overall and the production values were waayy off. Engineering = WTF? was going to again now i won't. I might not even buy the DVD.
Not only was this movie reflective of being written by a junior high school student, but it is the worst film I have ever seen. Wow! I have never seen such a bad film. Thank you Mr. Abrams for making sure Star Trek is dead.
I'm a Trek fan and I just see this movie as a stepping stone for the franchise.
There were some major logic flaws in the movie I will agree.
examples: red matter drop = black hole, where as big ball of red matter = same black hole.
(although I think they tried to state that the red matter separated into many little drops when spocks ship hit, causing one drop to create the black hole and the others just sucked in), however that still doesn't......
And why does Spock need all that red matter in the first place? Maybe it replicates itself? Should have explained it more in detail.
Also why could they not lock Spock's mother, I mean I know she was falling but everyone else was stationary. Her path would be easy to predict.
There are way more things that weren't right, but surprisingly i still really liked the movie. And I'm willing to put the flaws aside and just go watch the movie again for the fact that it is a great movie.
So the "black hole" sent Nero to the past which he changed by his very presence, right? Trek fans have seen alot of Trek, so there were not alot of new elements in the film other than the "new" characters and ship which were cool I thought. The themes of the film were present, but were overwhelmed by the spectacle of the film. I believe the themes were of being the very best you can be and not settling.
See the major problem that I had was that if Nero got sucked into the past, destroyed a Federation ship, how come the Federation didn't send all of it's ships to investigate/defend itself? There was a massacre and for 25 years, no one did anything about it?
Second, Nero didn't know Spock was eventually going to show up there, so why would he wait in one spot for 25 years for him to show up? Then, on that crazy shot in a million chance he did, why capture him then strand him on a planet?
If I wanted revenge bad enough to wait for half a century in space, I would capture him, and be there by his side when I commit genocide on his people and homeland so that I could watch his face as the sheer terror overwhelms him.
If this were a real Star Trek movie, Nero would have traveled to Romulas to try and stop the star from going supernova to begin with so that his race and family wouldn't get destroyed int he future.
Hi Ryan. I saw the film last night as well. I was worried about the inconsistency in normal Star Trek canon, but the whole alternative reality thing cured most of it. Considering this was a year ago, I agree with both you guys.
I enjoyed the film and am curious as to where they are going with it.
TOS had many space-time episodes, but no one decided to alter time or continue with an altered time continuum in TOS- ever.
Other inconsistencies were...
Spock should have been a Lt. Commander at BEST in the film.
Checkov should have been about 11 years old.
Lt. Uhura was a cadet- promoted to a Lieutenant? How?
Great film but not a Star Trek film.

rayman811 2 years ago
explain why Neros ship wasn't instantly sucked in as well. Sure it was a massive ship, but the previous black hole devoured Vulcan in a few seconds.
Also a black hole would devour spherically, so the whole planet would implode...not the visual effect we were shown.
The only solution to this is that the red matter was creating worm holes and not black holes. But again the visual would be wrong.
rayman811 2 years ago
And why does Spock need all that red matter in the first place? Maybe it replicates itself? Should have explained it more in detail.
Also why could they not lock Spock's mother, I mean I know she was falling but everyone else was stationary. Her path would be easy to predict.
There are way more things that weren't right, but surprisingly i still really liked the movie. And I'm willing to put the flaws aside and just go watch the movie again for the fact that it is a great movie.
