Hi Tom, How long after surgery were you able to breathe again? Im asking because I had the same procedure done last thursday and I am still stuffed, the drainage was intense for the last three days but now the drainage is a lot less now.
@BlazingOrganix Hey i can't remember exactly how long ago it was, the surgery for me was over 3 years ago now. Time flies. But i would say you should be breathing almost normal by thursday
hi...did the doctor put the packaging inside...i heard that is super painful when doctor getting it out....I will go for a septoplasty with turbinectomy operation very soon...i am really afraid bcos i will be very painful. how do u feel?
Vitamin C ; Vitamin A ; fish oil are very important after surgery . it speed up the healing of the surgery. I just done the correction of deviated septum & reduction of turbinate . today is my third day, no bleeding no pain just some water draining out of my nose.
I just had the same surgery last week. I agree I have had way more painful things done to my body but this was awful. So uncomfortable. The worst was when they took the splints out. I nearly passed out. I ended up taking my own stitches out bc the doc didn't. This was so traumatic for me. I will never have it done again.
I am getting sinus surgurey and im so scared. It will be my first surgurey where ill be put to sleep, like with and IV and stuff. I dont know what to expect...
@livvy916 at first u will feel cold at the IV site, then little scratch in you throat, then come weird dreams and u wake up in recovery room, from time I walked in the door to time I walked out it was 4 hours, no pain, I just took 1 tylenol with codeine as precaution few hours after surgery. Little bleeding on first day after surgery , almost no bleeding on second day which is today, no pain just little discomfort
side notes: you shouldn't lift heavy things, bend, or do any exercise that may put pressure on the sinus/head for a while. Also, concerning work, I'd recommend to plan 9-10 days off (especially if ur job requires talking to people) to be on the safe side; if ur job doesn't requires a lot of effort and talking then 7 days will prob be enough..
That's all I can think of right now, but feel free to send me a message of you have qns regarding my experience since it's different than Tom's. Good Luck
days 5,6,n 7 I started getting better, but still was stuffed n had trouble sleeping (probably bcz i stopped the pain medicine).. on day 8 the Dr cleaned my sinus; this helped a lot (cleaning procedure is very annoying, but not painful). days 8-10 I was continuously improving :), but still have trouble sleeping (not sure why tho or whether its related to the surgery or not). I can say that today (which is my 10th day after the surgery) my sinus cleared about 80-90% n I DO feel a lot better :D
Hey, thanks for the vid. Actually, I had the same surgery (sinus+deviated septum) exactly 10 days ago, but it never occurred to me to search for such blogs before my surgery!
anyway, my experience apparently was not as good as urs! 1)waking up from the general anastasia I felt like I was suffocating.2)the first 4 days i felt pain/stuffiness/dryness, n I basically slept all day bcz of the pain medicine which also made me dizzy; i stopped it at day 5. (continued)
@tqb43 Did you feel any pressure or pain in your cheek bones prior to the surgery? I feel some pain in my cheeks and I heard poppin in my nose the other day. Im going to see my DR on friday and Im nervous. I hope steroid or flonase can cure it.
I had my surgery exactly a week ago. My septum was not the problem, I just had a lot of build up and my drainage canals are (were) too narrow. I had no pain what so ever, but it has been very uncomfortable breathing through my mouth and even harder trying to sleep. I am still very stuffed up, but my post of visit was today and I am to start the sinus rinses which should clear out the rest of the gunk.
@lisaann7451 Yes i was constantly getting sinus infections, got a 4 or 5 a year. And that went on for years since i was young and i was slowly becoming immune to the antibiotics i was prescribed. So the doctor finally suggested i go to an ENT
@crazyfunny2009 you mean in general? no i can't say i had trouble sleeping. The closer to the surgery day it got, i became more nervous and probably harder to sleep then.
have any of you sneezed after surgery? and if you did, did it hurt? My gf has sinus problems but shes too scared to feel the pain if she sneezes... she sneezes ALOT!
@tqb45 Hello i have been looking at doint this for a couple days. Eversince i was about 10 i would get the worst headachs later finding out it was my sinuses. I also have a deviated septum and was wondering the pain scale and does the surgery change the shape of your nose? Also how do you feel after the surgery? Any sinus pressure? Thanks
i got mine done to day on the left side. The first few hours are the weirdest. After that you'll feel great. Im 18 healthy athletic guy and dont smoke. if your healthy dont worry about the after pain. The only bad part is a little burning on the nose and a small sore throat.
I had this done a week ago today and just had my splints removed. OH MY GOD what a relief and the doc said im not even through healing. I still have better breathing to look forward too. I did have a turbinate reduction as well and was quite scared about the consequences (see empty nose syndrome) but my doc did the new method where the did a resection of the turbinate bone leaving the deliceate tissue intact. after 9 years of a deviated septum, this was the best decision I ever made!!!!
My voice cleared up some after i healed up. i didn't sound as congested as i did. And don't worry about the anesthesia, it was the coolest part of the surgery. You feel them give it to you, because it's cool, and then i'm not sure how to describe it but the next thing you know, you're waking up. It's not bad
@tqb43 Hi, I'm not so worried now about the sleep part its just that now im concerned about being woken up during the anesthesia process LOL! i'm a light sleeper so yeah..
Had this done 2 times because they first time did nothing and my septum was not straight and i still could not breath. The second time my nose started to bleed one week latter and i could not stop it and rushed back to Hospital where i had a ballon put up my nose to stop the blood and spent the next 4 nights there in pain.Nothing has worked for me and i can only breath maybe 5% better.Dont not go to Dr Kane in Melbourne Australia!
Thanks for posting this - I had my surgery a couple of months back, they did everything, all 4 sinuses, septoplasty, polyps, you name it. Roto-rooter on the sinus tract. But I can breath now like I have not been able to in years. I was lucky to have a surgeon that does not "pack", and as it turns out, was not a big deal. They say that 70% of us have to do it again within 7 years.
Well, that is obviously for sinus polyps. The septoplasty and reconstruction don't change, but those with nasal polyps usually have to have it done again in 7-10 years. So you may be good for life, as I didn't see you mention the polyp problem.
Had my deviated septum fixed 5 days ago, I had the wadding removed after only 1 day. Can't completely breathe through my nose yet but getting there :) If anyone has been having trouble with a deviated septum/sinus trouble I would definitely get it sorted! It's not that traumatic :)
yeah, I have my surgery set for Sept 10. I have a 95 percent blockage in my left nostril from my septum. The doctor said they dont pack it there so that is good! I was worried about the packing!
I had minor septum surgery and polyp removal about 6 weeks ago. I was able to breath a little through my nose and smell coffee again, just 48 hours after surgery. My surgeon does not 'pack' which was great... Find a surgeon that does not do this antiquated method.
So, it took a week for you to completely breathe through your nose? Did you have air flow through your nose at all prior to breating through it completely? I need the surgery but am kind of scared of having to breathe through my mouth all the time after the surgery. Thanks for all your help.
@mcpeo no i definately could breath through my nose before that. It's just like having a cold. I remember after i got the packing out (3 days later) i could breath much better. I'm sorry its been so long i can't remember all those details :X However don't be scared it's worth it.
DUDE IT SUCKS ^^ I had the same and also polups removed. i had to stay over night. I keep taking my mask off lmaoo. it hurts like hell but i got morphine and killers. the recovry took 3 months and i still get infections so bad :( not as bad and not as much but yah best off luck
hey i do have a question relation to you blocked sinus, if and when you nose got really congested ( i suffer form acute rhinosinusitus ) did did/do you have panic attacks and when you have the gauze (tampon thing) is in your sinus cavity, i suffer form panic attacks when my nose is blocked and congested just wanted to know how you took care of this little problem i have my surgery booked for the 5th may 2010
@theguruwill prior to surgery i never realized how blocked my sinuses and everything were because it all built up gradually therefor i had no panic attacks. After the surgery, with the packing in my nose, it felt like having a bad nose where you can't breath out your nose. I think you've had those and have survived fine, so don't fret the surgery. and i get panic attacks to.
@theguruwill the packing is up there but youll we be so tired youll sleep Alot. I freak out but its actualy conforting lol my surgery helped but i still get infections and swelling. I learned to live with it. When your nose gets stuffed take the end corner of a tissue and twist it up. wet it . put it in the stuffy side. if both stuffy lay on one side till it leakes over . Then when it is all leaked over take it out put afrin on the tissue put it in the bad side and hold it. DONT DO AFTER SURGERY
@theguruwill Had mine this morning and really no problems and very minimal pain if any. Just discomfort. Felt like a bad cold and the small amount of drainage let up. Took about 45 minutes. Git er done...lol
@techfreaks89 not with the medication. It is bother sum but after surgery the packing and gauze will comfort your nose. Youll basicaly sleep a lot with the pain killers.
i had sinus surgery 2 days ago for..... polyps, my sinuses were filled with some kind of bacterial liquid, and i had a deviated septum. did they pack your sinuses with the gause, or the gel? (gel is less likely to make you bleed when they take it out) and i feel like i have the flu or something, i dont feel well, im goin back to sleep. btw im only 13, so it sucked!
@tqb43 thanks, yeah the first week sucks so far. they used gel in my nose because i had a condition that makes me bleed longer than normal. so they used a gel pack to pack in my nose so i didnt bleed as much. and i have splints in now to fix the deviated septum. (stuffed up nose every day) but i can eat again! and the pain medicine makes me dizzy to.
I have to have this done in a few weeks! What pain medication did they give you? I'm worried about the meds because I react so weirdly to pain medication. Thanks
lol i just had the same thing done, i had a sinus infection, i was just wondering cause i have the whole gauze deal going on as well. but to you or anyone else on here i have these plugs or splints i guess there called, just wondering if it hurts to have them removed??
hey there, i think i talked about the packing in my second blog. I remember those were one of the things that bothered me the most. But to answer your question, when they remove them i would say it might hurt for a moment, it just feels more weird than anything. It should be relieving.
ok sweet, cause right now my face looks like that right now, the gauze with tape. and it looks like a have 2 mini tampons sticking out of my nose lol. i had a double surgery tho, my sinus infection, and also had my uvla trimmed cause of my air way constriction. would you recommend like taking a pain killer before hand when he removes it??
I just had major sinus surgery a week ago. My surgeon does not 'pack' and I think it made a big difference. There was certainly a lot of bleeding during first 4 hours after going home, but after that it slowed a lot. No pain at any time, even right after I woke up. A week down and the surgery is all but forgotten. I'd do this again in a heartbeat. My ability to smell came back on day 2. (I was not able to smell anything for the past 6 months) - Just make sure you get a non-packing surgeon!
I guess it depends on the situation. I was actually in surgery probably less than a hour but the prepping, and Post OP takes some time.
Yes you need to FAST before surgery. Your Dr. should give you detailed instructions. I know this looks horrible and to be honest it does suck pretty bad but looking back on it i wouldnt hesitate to do it again...:o)
i just had this surgery last week. Aside from the day they took the packing out when i was breathing great, my breathing has been pretty good at times and not great at others. when does the breathing get consistently good?
I got septoplasty, maxilary sinus cyst removal, polypectomy! the whole sinuses cleaning on thursday...They just made a "suppa cleaning"!
My nasal packs will be removed tomorrow!
I didn't feel any kind of pain, didn't had to take a single analgesic since I woke from the surgery, it's just realy uncomfortable: breathing through mouth for few days and bad sleep!
Now it depends on what type of surgery is done and who's doing it ;)...Seems that I was lucky, 'til now.
I also had this done about 2 months ago and I do feel somewhat different. Yes I also had some pain due to intubation but not something that stopped me from eating.
Next day I thought I would just crumble under the pain but I felt so good I attended my classes at college (a big no-no says my doctor).
If any of you guys are thinking of having this done I'd say don't worry. The pain is not that much and the results are worth it in my opinion.
Question: did the insertion of the breathing tube and the extraction hurt? I am freaking out. I have a bony structure on my right nasal opening and they have to drill it open. So scared of pain when I wake up :(
no you will probably be asleep when they take it out. AND if you are awake you won't remember it. Your throat might hurt and you might not have much of a voice. it's not worth freaking out about
did you have "crusting" inside your nose at all. I just got one of these surgeries 2 days ago and I have a LOT of crusting inside my nose. Furthermore, my doctor told me not to blow my nose at all which may further trigger bleeding. Its really annoying and uncomfortable.
(He did give me some kind of bottle which pushes water thru one nose and comes out the other to clean but even though its better than before, its still not very effective for me)
I had anestizia too... they gave me a an adult dose, because the regular didnt effect me. Then after i woke up, i could hardly move and they told me to leave. I slept for 2 days sttraight.
Also the packing they stuck in my nose, hurt like hell wen they just decided to rip it out of my head.
i had this done under anesthesia. there wasnt any pain from the surgery site, but my throat was pain after the intubation...=/ and when they removed the nasal packs, it really hurts...my eyes wear tearing like tap water...
Do you people get it done in narcose (=sleep) or just local anesthesia? We have the latter common here in Finland and I didn't want narcose because there's always risks involved in that, but having watched few operating videos here, augh,,,,
Hate the constant headaches, blocked nose, bleeds... Gonna have it, but...
mate you hit the nail on the head with the posts you put up about this op, im on day 3 now and things get alot better once your nose stops running like a tap !
Sinus problems are the worst, My breathing is terrible and have tried just dealing with it but it's so annoying. I feel like surgery may be my only option to releive near constant congestion.
I have sinus, and Im really upset about that, I want to have a surgeon because it makes me feel bad all the time... with the surgery did you got the cure?? are you totally health now???
do you have splints or anything up your nose? i heard that the people that did, said it was really painful to get those out. i am having this surgery in two days.
i did actually. And it wasn't too bad to have them removed. I was more happy to get them out of there that the pain didnt matter. I just felt really tight pressure between my eyes. I'd do it again. (not for fun)
i broke my nose like 4 times 2 years ago and since i have never breathed the same and my nose feels and looks fatter the cartilage area and now its runny alot i think this is what i need
Hey thanx a lot for the pep talk I had my surgery on Friday no pain really and thats because I had polyps huge deviation and sinusitis with turbinate reduction. But the weird thing is today is day 3 and I don't know why but i feel kinda funny like a druged up feeling but ive only taken tylenol did you have this if so how long did this last its kind of frustrating. Again thanx a lot you honestly helped me out big time!!!
howdy, im glad to hear it went well. I remember the first few days i felt fine because i was so drugged up, but then the drugs started making me feel weird so i took tylenol. The tylenol didnt help as much but it wasnt bad. Just give it time and you'll feel better :)
I'm gonna have surgery next Friday im freaking out ive seen your video about 100 times to try to get some courage. I also have an anxiety disorder but im just dwelling on this. I had to sign that paper said just in case of death and thats what triggered it I freaked out. What gave you the courage to get past all the negative???
hah don't worry, especially if i made it through it okay :p
Well, i kept in mind the fact that they do they surgery all the time, and i've never heard of a death or anything serious happening from it. I also knew that in the long run this would be the best thing for me. It'll be okay.
do u now feel like yr sinuses and nasal passage experience empty nose syndrome. did u have nasal polypoids .why did they reconstruct the sinuses which sinus was reconstructed.was it the maxillary sinus if so how did they correct it.if not which sinus was and how did they do it. was it the ethomoidal one causing u more pain or the other 6 either side of the face.
No i did not experience ENS, i mean i couldnt smell or taste for about 2 weeks really well just because of everything healing and the packaging etc but i'm fine now. They reconstructed my sinsues because the passage ways were too narrow. They cleared out and widened every one of my sinuses. And i didn't feel any pain in my face because i had a sinus infection for 3 years and didn't feel pain with it anymore.
Hey just wanted to let you know I had surgery a week ago. It went really well. They took out the tampons things the day after and they took out the plastic things today. THAT WAS NOT FUN. My throat STILL hurts and eating some stuff is still hard. I've been taking vicodin and eating ice cream galore for that. I am still a little congested but I am able to breather through my nose finally. Thanks for the postive support.
advice- yeah don't be nervous. It's not that big of a deal. It's not bad at all. You'll go to the hosptial, fill out paper work. Then your taken back to the operating room and before you know it your leaving the hospital. And you won't be in any pain, you just wont be able to breath out your nose. Then the next week you'll feel like you have a bad nose. Trust me i was scared as sh!t- i have an anxiety disorder- but it went fine.
Dude I feel your pain! I had septoplasty 5 years ago. I was born with a deviated septum in which the doctor told me it was in between moderate and severe leaning towards the severe side. It was a bitch to go through especially when they pulled that packing out! I was hopped up on Percocet (which is a wonderful painkiller loL!) the best part of the whole thing :) After two weeks of stitches, plastic stints and packing in my nose IT WAS WORTH IT. I can breathe so much better now!
well i had my surgery about 2 weeks ago and im still sore, cold still hurts it, certain chemicals and stuff. but i can breathe so much better. i have to go to the allergist and figure out what im allergic to. i had to go back yesterday for the doctor to do a ""BOOGER PICKING"" when he stuck the vacuum in my nose and sucked the boogers out, well i thought i was going to DIE. it was terrible. he didnt have to pull out packing, he used absorbable, but it really hurt. email me back if ya got ne ??
im having sinus surgery wednesday today is monday. All of my sinus cavities on my right side are filled with gunk and partially my left side. so im having surgery on both sides all the way up to the top one right at your brain. i am super nervous. mostly about messing up and blowing my nose or something. the video was really helpful
Hey nina200816, I have never been able to breathe through my nose. I have been really getting to the point where enough is enough. Can you shoot me a message on how your procedure went?
Thanks so much for posting this! I'm about to have this AND my tonisils out at the same time & I'm 31!!! LOL! I think I'm more scared about the tonisils than the septum sugery. I just worry about being able to breath. Having to breath out my mouth and drying out my throat. :-(
Anyway glad ur all healed up! Thanks again for the video.
I don't have my surgery until 4-27. I'm SOOO scared! I will let u know the cost after I get the stuff. My insurance is paying 90%. I think my part is going to be around 150.00.
I just underwent this on Friday, I'm still recovering right now. Not painful, but uncomfortable with plastic tubes up my nose. They just don't feel like they belong there.
I had the same thing, done to me on October 14'th 08, had to say being my fourth surgery it was easy, I was off for a week and I had gause in my nose..packing for 2 days, and percaset, no pain otherwise even without them for me, it bleeds alot, and u gotta keep a gause under it alot. its annoying to eat and speak, but i dont have a problem breathing with my mouth open, dont sleep on a bed sleep on a recliner
I just had mine yesterday, was pretty cool being knocked out for the first time! Suckiest part was having the packing in over night, along with a breathing tube for each nostril! All I can say is take the pain killers and you'll be fine!
I have a blocked nose now and am going through tissues like you wouldn't believe, it's not painful now though.
i just got my sinus surgery this morning and just wonder how do you know if you have packing? My nose doesnt feel like it has any thing in it.. anywho waking up sucks throat hurts and is dry
Hmm my doctor told me i had a little packing so i guess thats how i knew. Sometimes people get tubes in their nose instead, i think you would know if u had that. And take some cough drops for the throat, it really helps.
Usually If applied to much pressure doing something lots came out, Just try laying down with head up right..
AND TAKE ALL YOUR ANTIOBIOTICS, if you were prescribed to them, I foolishly did it wrong and have to retaken and had a little pressure but not its gone....
Well when I took a shower, Lots of blood came out, I also had sex and lots of came out, or if was sleeping face down lots of came down.. all I can say man it sit on the couch with your head up right and you gotta sleep like that too..
ok that's good. thanks! also, did u have to stay overnight? cuz i was going to have to get my tonsils removed along with the surgery and i was going to have to stay the night but i decided not to get my tonsels removed.
no i did not have to stay over night, originally my mom wanted me too but my doctor said its not worth it because there are a lot of sick people in hospitals and its probably not best to be around them.
did u have to have nasal packing? cuz i have to have the same surgery and the only things i'm really nervous about are the iv (i HATE needles!!!) and if i have to get nasal packing (it looks DISGHUSTING when it comes out!) i'm only 15 and i have to have sinus surgery! ah!
hey, i had a little bit of nasal packing, i just had the pinky finger of a glove with cotton in it stuck up in my nose. When it came out, it didn't hurt it just felt kinda weird, i mostly just remember feeling pressure in-between my eyes when she pulled it out. Don't worry about the IV, its just a needle, like having blood drawn. After the IV is in you...you fall asleep pretty quickly within a matter of minutes. Don't worry you can handle the surgery :) its just a annoying week after that.
Hi Tom, How long after surgery were you able to breathe again? Im asking because I had the same procedure done last thursday and I am still stuffed, the drainage was intense for the last three days but now the drainage is a lot less now.

I did have a turbinate reduction as well and was quite scared about the consequences (see empty nose syndrome) but my doc did the new method where the did a resection of the turbinate bone leaving the deliceate tissue intact. after 9 years of a deviated septum, this was the best decision I ever made!!!!

i have had this surgery, plus two more to remove polyps. i was just miserable, 2 times they had to break my nose to do so. it hurt like heck.

I'm having surgery is that what they give you after im having my sinus surgery this monday june 21st how was the Anesthisa i'm scared honestly
SupportAlexJones 1 year ago
@SupportAlexJones hey man,
My voice cleared up some after i healed up. i didn't sound as congested as i did. And don't worry about the anesthesia, it was the coolest part of the surgery. You feel them give it to you, because it's cool, and then i'm not sure how to describe it but the next thing you know, you're waking up. It's not bad
tqb43 1 year ago
@tqb43 Hi, I'm not so worried now about the sleep part its just that now im concerned about being woken up during the anesthesia process LOL! i'm a light sleeper so yeah..
SupportAlexJones 1 year ago
Had this done 2 times because they first time did nothing and my septum was not straight and i still could not breath. The second time my nose started to bleed one week latter and i could not stop it and rushed back to Hospital where i had a ballon put up my nose to stop the blood and spent the next 4 nights there in pain.Nothing has worked for me and i can only breath maybe 5% better.Dont not go to Dr Kane in Melbourne Australia!
Graemekiss 1 year ago
Thanks for posting this - I had my surgery a couple of months back, they did everything, all 4 sinuses, septoplasty, polyps, you name it. Roto-rooter on the sinus tract. But I can breath now like I have not been able to in years. I was lucky to have a surgeon that does not "pack", and as it turns out, was not a big deal. They say that 70% of us have to do it again within 7 years.
tahoekid77 1 year ago
@tahoekid77 what happens after the 2nd surgery? another 7 years? :( hope thats not true
tqb43 1 year ago
@tqb43
Well, that is obviously for sinus polyps. The septoplasty and reconstruction don't change, but those with nasal polyps usually have to have it done again in 7-10 years. So you may be good for life, as I didn't see you mention the polyp problem.
CaliforniaOpenRoad 1 year ago
@tahoekid77 why do 70% of us have to it again in seven years?
TheBlanco951 1 year ago
Had my deviated septum fixed 5 days ago, I had the wadding removed after only 1 day. Can't completely breathe through my nose yet but getting there :) If anyone has been having trouble with a deviated septum/sinus trouble I would definitely get it sorted! It's not that traumatic :)

@Jynxyjo
yeah, I have my surgery set for Sept 10. I have a 95 percent blockage in my left nostril from my septum. The doctor said they dont pack it there so that is good! I was worried about the packing!

i feel great!!!!!!! its been a month or so, and im doing great! im so glad i dont have to do that again! thnx for the encouragement

I had minor septum surgery and polyp removal about 6 weeks ago. I was able to breath a little through my nose and smell coffee again, just 48 hours after surgery. My surgeon does not 'pack' which was great... Find a surgeon that does not do this antiquated method.
CaliforniaOpenRoad 1 year ago
So, it took a week for you to completely breathe through your nose? Did you have air flow through your nose at all prior to breating through it completely? I need the surgery but am kind of scared of having to breathe through my mouth all the time after the surgery. Thanks for all your help.
mcpeo 1 year ago
@mcpeo no i definately could breath through my nose before that. It's just like having a cold. I remember after i got the packing out (3 days later) i could breath much better. I'm sorry its been so long i can't remember all those details :X However don't be scared it's worth it.

hey i do have a question relation to you blocked sinus, if and when you nose got really congested ( i suffer form acute rhinosinusitus ) did did/do you have panic attacks and when you have the gauze (tampon thing) is in your sinus cavity, i suffer form panic attacks when my nose is blocked and congested just wanted to know how you took care of this little problem i have my surgery booked for the 5th may 2010
theguruwill 1 year ago
@theguruwill prior to surgery i never realized how blocked my sinuses and everything were because it all built up gradually therefor i had no panic attacks. After the surgery, with the packing in my nose, it felt like having a bad nose where you can't breath out your nose. I think you've had those and have survived fine, so don't fret the surgery. and i get panic attacks to.
tqb43 1 year ago
@theguruwill the packing is up there but youll we be so tired youll sleep Alot. I freak out but its actualy conforting lol my surgery helped but i still get infections and swelling. I learned to live with it. When your nose gets stuffed take the end corner of a tissue and twist it up. wet it . put it in the stuffy side. if both stuffy lay on one side till it leakes over . Then when it is all leaked over take it out put afrin on the tissue put it in the bad side and hold it. DONT DO AFTER SURGERY
EMOxxxTRAGEDY 1 year ago

(gel is less likely to make you bleed when they take it out) and i feel like i have the flu or something, i dont feel well, im goin back to sleep. btw im only 13, so it sucked!
wolfbane300 1 year ago
@wolfbane300 hey man, hang in there. i felt like i was sick after my surgery too.
They used a small gause to pack me up with. I had never heard of them using gel...
tqb43 1 year ago
@tqb43 thanks, yeah the first week sucks so far. they used gel in my nose because i had a condition that makes me bleed longer than normal. so they used a gel pack to pack in my nose so i didnt bleed as much. and i have splints in now to fix the deviated septum. (stuffed up nose every day) but i can eat again! and the pain medicine makes me dizzy to.
wolfbane300 1 year ago
@wolfbane300 you'll start feeling better soon

hi tom! :D
lol i just had the same thing done, i had a sinus infection, i was just wondering cause i have the whole gauze deal going on as well. but to you or anyone else on here i have these plugs or splints i guess there called, just wondering if it hurts to have them removed??
Diablowuff 1 year ago
hey there, i think i talked about the packing in my second blog. I remember those were one of the things that bothered me the most. But to answer your question, when they remove them i would say it might hurt for a moment, it just feels more weird than anything. It should be relieving.
tqb43 1 year ago
ok sweet, cause right now my face looks like that right now, the gauze with tape. and it looks like a have 2 mini tampons sticking out of my nose lol. i had a double surgery tho, my sinus infection, and also had my uvla trimmed cause of my air way constriction. would you recommend like taking a pain killer before hand when he removes it??
Diablowuff 1 year ago
Yeah thats a good idea. When do you get them out?
tqb43 1 year ago
I just had major sinus surgery a week ago. My surgeon does not 'pack' and I think it made a big difference. There was certainly a lot of bleeding during first 4 hours after going home, but after that it slowed a lot. No pain at any time, even right after I woke up. A week down and the surgery is all but forgotten. I'd do this again in a heartbeat. My ability to smell came back on day 2. (I was not able to smell anything for the past 6 months) - Just make sure you get a non-packing surgeon!
tahoekid77 1 year ago
It sucks terrible! Taking the packing out is terrible, then the clotted blood for two weeks and not being able to breath is unreal!
Ekkkkk!
It's truely terrible, but in the end well worth it...

how long is the surgery? Is fasting required before the surgery?
stingrayzer 1 year ago
Hey Sting,
I guess it depends on the situation.
Good Luck!
justinbower 1 year ago
i just had this surgery last week. Aside from the day they took the packing out when i was breathing great, my breathing has been pretty good at times and not great at others. when does the breathing get consistently good?
hoobie06 2 years ago
I got septoplasty, maxilary sinus cyst removal, polypectomy! the whole sinuses cleaning on thursday...They just made a "suppa cleaning"!
My nasal packs will be removed tomorrow!
I didn't feel any kind of pain, didn't had to take a single analgesic since I woke from the surgery, it's just realy uncomfortable: breathing through mouth for few days and bad sleep!
Now it depends on what type of surgery is done and who's doing it ;)...Seems that I was lucky, 'til now.

kenshidaz 2 years ago
I also had this done about 2 months ago and I do feel somewhat different. Yes I also had some pain due to intubation but not something that stopped me from eating.
Next day I thought I would just crumble under the pain but I felt so good I attended my classes at college (a big no-no says my doctor).
If any of you guys are thinking of having this done I'd say don't worry. The pain is not that much and the results are worth it in my opinion.

Question: did the insertion of the breathing tube and the extraction hurt? I am freaking out. I have a bony structure on my right nasal opening and they have to drill it open. So scared of pain when I wake up :(
neriye1m 2 years ago
no you will probably be asleep when they take it out. AND if you are awake you won't remember it. Your throat might hurt and you might not have much of a voice. it's not worth freaking out about
tqb43 2 years ago
did you have "crusting" inside your nose at all. I just got one of these surgeries 2 days ago and I have a LOT of crusting inside my nose. Furthermore, my doctor told me not to blow my nose at all which may further trigger bleeding. Its really annoying and uncomfortable.
(He did give me some kind of bottle which pushes water thru one nose and comes out the other to clean but even though its better than before, its still not very effective for me)
theiceman9081 2 years ago
yeah i had a ton of crusting, that's normal. just keep using the bottle he gave you.

I had anestizia too... they gave me a an adult dose, because the regular didnt effect me. Then after i woke up, i could hardly move and they told me to leave. I slept for 2 days sttraight.
Also the packing they stuck in my nose, hurt like hell wen they just decided to rip it out of my head.

i had this done under anesthesia. there wasnt any pain from the surgery site, but my throat was pain after the intubation...=/ and when they removed the nasal packs, it really hurts...my eyes wear tearing like tap water...

i had this a few months ago lol very annoying feeling , i was bleeding for about 2 days , and when u cough it kinda hurts.
i had this wif S.A.R.P.E surgery along wif 4 wisdom tooth removal , wasn't a very nice night
they called me in at 7am and i waited till 9:30 pm to have the surgery lol so i was shitting bricks for about 14 hours waiting in my room.

Do you people get it done in narcose (=sleep) or just local anesthesia? We have the latter common here in Finland and I didn't want narcose because there's always risks involved in that, but having watched few operating videos here, augh,,,,

Again thanx a lot you honestly helped me out big time!!!

Well, i kept in mind the fact that they do they surgery all the time, and i've never heard of a death or anything serious happening from it. I also knew that in the long run this would be the best thing for me. It'll be okay.

2008JERSEYBOY 2 years ago
do u now feel like yr sinuses and nasal passage experience empty nose syndrome. did u have nasal polypoids .why did they reconstruct the sinuses which sinus was reconstructed.was it the maxillary sinus if so how did they correct it.if not which sinus was and how did they do it. was it the ethomoidal one causing u more pain or the other 6 either side of the face.
leanda27 2 years ago
No i did not experience ENS, i mean i couldnt smell or taste for about 2 weeks really well just because of everything healing and the packaging etc but i'm fine now. They reconstructed my sinsues because the passage ways were too narrow. They cleared out and widened every one of my sinuses. And i didn't feel any pain in my face because i had a sinus infection for 3 years and didn't feel pain with it anymore.
tqb43 2 years ago
what's your recovery time?

about 2 weeks, 6 weeks for full recovery
tqb43 2 years ago
Hey just wanted to let you know I had surgery a week ago. It went really well. They took out the tampons things the day after and they took out the plastic things today. THAT WAS NOT FUN. My throat STILL hurts and eating some stuff is still hard. I've been taking vicodin and eating ice cream galore for that. I am still a little congested but I am able to breather through my nose finally. Thanks for the postive support.

ok so i am having this surgery next week any advice? I AM SO NERVOUS
skjono 2 years ago
advice- yeah don't be nervous. Trust me i was scared as sh!t- i have an anxiety disorder- but it went fine.
tqb43 2 years ago
Dude I feel your pain! I had septoplasty 5 years ago. I was born with a deviated septum in which the doctor told me it was in between moderate and severe leaning towards the severe side. It was a bitch to go through especially when they pulled that packing out! I was hopped up on Percocet (which is a wonderful painkiller loL!) the best part of the whole thing :) After two weeks of stitches, plastic stints and packing in my nose IT WAS WORTH IT. I can breathe so much better now!
mikestrummer85 2 years ago
well i had my surgery about 2 weeks ago and im still sore, cold still hurts it, certain chemicals and stuff. but i can breathe so much better. i have to go to the allergist and figure out what im allergic to. i had to go back yesterday for the doctor to do a ""BOOGER PICKING"" when he stuck the vacuum in my nose and sucked the boogers out, well i thought i was going to DIE. it was terrible. he didnt have to pull out packing, he used absorbable, but it really hurt. email me back if ya got ne ??

Hmm my doctor told me i had a little packing so i guess thats how i knew. Sometimes people get tubes in their nose instead, i think you would know if u had that. And take some cough drops for the throat, it really helps.

eyy i just had mine this morning man i had alot of blood comin out had to keep changin my bandage did u have same problem??

Yeah I changed my bandage 2-4 times a day..
Usually If applied to much pressure doing something lots came out, Just try laying down with head up right..
AND TAKE ALL YOUR ANTIOBIOTICS, if you were prescribed to them, I foolishly did it wrong and have to retaken and had a little pressure but not its gone....
I feel much better now tho..
RawbertDestruct 3 years ago
Well when I took a shower, Lots of blood came out, I also had sex and lots of came out, or if was sleeping face down lots of came down.. all I can say man it sit on the couch with your head up right and you gotta sleep like that too..

ok that's good. thanks! also, did u have to stay overnight? cuz i was going to have to get my tonsils removed along with the surgery and i was going to have to stay the night but i decided not to get my tonsels removed.
karb2005 3 years ago
no i did not have to stay over night, originally my mom wanted me too but my doctor said its not worth it because there are a lot of sick people in hospitals and its probably not best to be around them.
tqb43 3 years ago
did u have to have nasal packing? cuz i have to have the same surgery and the only things i'm really nervous about are the iv (i HATE needles!!!) and if i have to get nasal packing (it looks DISGHUSTING when it comes out!) i'm only 15 and i have to have sinus surgery! ah!
karb2005 3 years ago
hey, i had a little bit of nasal packing, i just had the pinky finger of a glove with cotton in it stuck up in my nose.
