  • OMG my Windstar is making the EXACT same noise and the "Service Engine soon" light has just cam on. So what was the problem?

  • GO to your wrecker and ask them for a cam syncronizer - get a local tech to swap it out. its not that hard.

  • @gichmaster cam sync, dont sound like that, and it wouldnt keep doing that if the engine is off, its some kinda of vacume leak

  • there is a vacum house to the left and its black ,,,so check the leake there .

  • POWER STEERING PUMP???????

iv replaced mine 3 times =/

or take ur belt off nd spray each pully with PB blaster just a lil thought ? maybe lol

  • check idler pulley and belt tension er pulley or ac compressor is jamming

  • oil the dip-stick

  • So what was wrong with the van??.. Curious to know because i'm working on a van with this exact engine - not the same problem though..This van has water in the engine oil..

  • sorry but that makes me laugh! haha..... that thing is so sick hahaha im sorry.....

  • need more advice i have one and i know all the issues they have p0171 is one i just finished fixing on the van usually dpfe sensor or egr valve gone bad so yeah

  • check ac compressor or p/s compressor and all pullys

  • vaccuum leak or bearing in electric only things to explain the way the noise continues

  • I am a auto tech of 14 years. I have worked on ford cars my whole life this is a very simple issue it not cam syncros or water pumps a cam syncros bitches all the time and some times kills the engine. the real clue is that it continues like air being let out of a balloon this is a vacuum issue more like the IAC or idle air controller the bushings in the controller are loose and make the pintle roll around in the seat making the hoot noise it on the top by the thottle body helb by 2 bolts 8mm

  • its ford.... that the problem... no, i am not like that... i actually love the 98 model of these

  • the problem is that its not a toyota sienna. lol jk. didnt the windstar have the same 3.8l engine as the thunderbird?

  • close to the same, some things were changed, intake manifold, same base and the mustang too,

  • I've got an 2003 Windstar with the 3.8L V6 and I just had the same exact problem with the bearings in the Cam Synchronizer.

I had someone from a Ford garage tell me off the record what it was so that I didn't have to pay a garage a buttload of money to replace the idler and tensioner pulley's. Unfortunatly now my check engine light is on because of the Cam Position Sensor.

  • i have the same squeak in mine...it happened after i let the van sit for a few weeks and took it for a rip (check videos) i sprayed some wd 40 on the water pump & power steering pulleys and it stopped

  • Sounds like a time belt and pull trouble

  • check the belt

  • replace the hydraulic belt tensioner...

  • That PCV valve on the front valve cover is choking engine is one problem. 1998 Windstars have the PCV valve only on the rear valve cover. That may help the stalling.

  • Coulda' had a 3.0!

  • My 93 oldsmobile silhouette had the same problem but I had it fixed it is A bad water pump. Hope it helped!! :)

  • Yes! your right it was the camshaft synchronizer what a madding experience. I was actually dramatize by my own auto mobile even my main mechanic told me my car was a car from hell because he couldn't figure out the problem. Needless, to say I change him and went to PEPboys and their mechanic found the problem "Thank God"

  • Great video. I have the exact problem (squeak and stall) on my 2001 Windstar. I believe it might be the water pump as thinkaboutit said. My squeak only came with the cold temperature change and about a month ago I noticed no antifreeze fluid in the overflow resevoir making me suspect back then that it might be the water pump.

  • Water pump. At least $400 - $700 depending on where you go. If you go to FORD expect to pay over $1000. On my 95 GL this only happened after very long trips after running for several hundred miles though the squeaking began to happen on every cold startup and would gradually go away after warmed up to operating temp.

  • Since the squeak lasts a few seconds after the engine is turned off, it's probably a very bad vacuum leak.

  • And you end every sentence with a ? or a !

wow kaihawanawana3 relax. use a period.

  • This sound your hearing is your cam synchronizer bearing going bad! The van stalls because the bearing locks up and the cam sensor looses its signal! If the check engine light is on? you will retrieve a code P0340 using a scan tool! so the parts you will need is a camshaft synchronizer and cam sensor! the best place to get this from is the dealer! If your asking how I know wat the problem is? I worked at a for dealership for 5 years! And also I have 2 98' Ford windstars also!

  • I'm guessing A/C compressor. Or a second guess of bearings going out on something?

  • it sounds like the belt is due to be changed..but then the squeak goes on after ignition is off....weird ..be carefull on this kind of car about axod gearbox which should get serviced once a year and get gearbox oil filter changed too about so often
