I used the m/45 (Swedish K) when in the Swedish Army in 1986-87. I served in a motorized rifle company, where the gun was issued to officers, staff and supply personnel, despatch riders and medics. We could field strip in 20 seconds (30 seconds blindfolded), and it was easy to clean. The riflemen were envious of us, because their AK4:s (Swedish version of the H&K G3) were quite a chore to clean.
@BjornH65 Last time I saw a Swedish K was at the Special Forces C camp outside Kontum, Central Highlands, Vietnam, during the Tet Offensive January 1968.
But i got to ask,why is everybody insisting on holding the magazine on the sten when you fire it? It causes it to jam and it makes the M.O.A. even worse and it wasnt good to begin with.
Of these guns I would take the Swedish K any day. Both the Sten and M3 "Grease gun" suffered from faulty magazines. The Swedish K is somewhat of a more robust and lasting firearm. All are good for their intended purpose. That is throwing a lot of lead at short to medium (with a prayer) distances. The slower cyclic rate makes all of these easier to control Than perhaps an Ingram in 9x19. I would love to see an example of a Finnish ..Suomi.. SMG. That is a REAL collector. Workmanship!
Interesting video but the Sten should be held ahead of the ejection port, not by the mag or magwell. I know that's a MKIII, and the magwell is welded in place as a result, but it still should be supported correctly and a mag grip won't do it.
both my grandads were conscripted in WWII and both loved the sten gun. Not because it was the best gun in the world but because it was what they had and it keeped them alive. One later became his squads Bren gunner and really loved that gun to the point that he named his one Grace after his wife.
Haha funny you should say that. The canadians (like myself) used to load those guns and throw them into a room full of nazis and all you would hear is ahhhhhh.
Just saw one listed on the boards in Nashville with a bunch of extras for 8.5k. It didn't last 2 days. If I had the coin it would be coming to Blountville.
I served as a radio-operator in the swedish artillery in 87-88 and was issued the swedisk K, known to us simply as model-45. It worked brilliantly in -30 C as well as +30 C. Allthough 9 mm submachinguns are obsolete as military weapons, the swedish K truly was a soldiers weapon. The modern submachineguns used by police forces are more sofisticated. The police don 't need weapons that can spend hours submerged in snow or mud before firing.
i agree with the part about hours in mud. People always saying ak 47's are better than m-16 etc because of reliability. Well shit clean your dam gun before you go into combat and your fine.
i would say most guns work after being the water. the biggest problem i see would be water getting to the shells. just shake most of the water out of the barrel and you are fine. i could show a video of this, however, i care for my rifles too much to do that just to prove a point. plus many seals just put a condom on the barrel to serve as a cork.
Poland. But our army has no big transport planes, little war planes and helicopters. In the 90s our army was still traweling over long distances by rail. So we use AK-47.
and you did make an excellent point on how mobile the u.s. army is, which is why we can afford to have a higher maintanance gun than the ak. as for when there are wars over energy i.e. fuel....that could easily change.
@ImperialInquisition fireng a STEN is askng for a jam. Worst mags ever made. Easy to cut clearence on bolt to clear Sterling mags which will then fit right in and then even with lightned bolt (as for supressed, subsonic ammo) it will fire reliabily (and very fast)
Yep, the Sten is awesome, mostly because it's SO simple. It's got a fucking angled metal rod with a vertical plate on the end of it and they call that a stock. Funky magazine positioning too, but hey, that shit works.
Lol we have never gotten something so trashy as an UZI. Plus, we make our own war materiel and equipment, we havent replaced the m45 k-pist yet. It still rocks, believe me.
I used this gun during my militay service in 1972/73 and I got the gold medal for automatic guns shooting it, it is a truly accurate gun up to (certainly) and maybe beyond 100 meters, and it is known as m45b.
The Sten is a MKIII? Looks like it was slipping in an out of select fire. I worked for a class III in Fla for a few years. I remember repairing a MKIII that was doing this. Thanx for the info on John Paul.
The K is a blast to shoot..no recoil due to the rate of fire and the weight. I acutually enjoy shooting it more than the MP-5. Come see me...JP in 10-E-C
For a full evaluation of the mystique of the Swedish K, see Peter Kokalis's article in SAR magazine (Small Arms Review). Kokalis, a world expert on the evolution of small arms, describes the cult rise of this "mediocre subgun" based on rumors and tales. Regardless,I still think it's cool as hell though.
I love the "K" but its way overrated by guys telling others that it was "a special forces weapon". A few were carried in Nam by CIA spooks because it was a "deniable" weapon, not produced in America. It was always chambered in 9mm, not .45acp. The great mystique of the "K" was its rarity. It is no wonder that our Swedish brethren thought it funny to hear stories of its use by US special forces; where the Swedes gave it to truck drivers.
The m/45 isnt a simple copy of the Soumi m31. If its a copy of anything its a copy of a sten, atleast eregarding the handling.
Larry Thorne probably used the m/45 because he had experienced the firepower of the m31 at short range, and the m/45 was the best option avilable 20 y later.
The m/45 is a good weapon up to 150 meters and its totally reliable. Not only the lorry drivers in the Swedish AF used to have it, but some special forces aswell. Due to its reliability.
