End of Evangelion was better because it actually completed the plot, which was interesting enough on its own. Although I felt this was more convincing than the majority of Shinji's sequences in EoE
@EagleSeven how they congratulate the childre-- WHY WOULD THEY CONGRATULATE THE CHILDREN? WHAT CHILDREN? WHAT KIND OF PARENTS WOULD ALLOW THEIR CHILDREN TO WATCH THIS ANGST RIDDEN ANIME?
Overall, GREAT anime, shitty-ass ending, NOT entirely the fault of Studio Gainax.
@EagleSeven Hate the ending... for those of you who DO like it, realize that this only happened because Studio Gainax's budget got shot because Studio Gainax got audited because the president pulled tax evasion. Also realize that the last two episodes are bull, were generally a big disappointment, were done impromptu, and make no sense, ESPECIALLY in the final four lines, starting off with how Shinji thanks his father, despite the fact that his father was a dick, and ending with...
Considering this was the director venting after recovering from crippling depression, Shinji's epiphany here that he's who he wants to be and the people congratulating him could easily be how he feels.
Some people say this ending shows that everybody can break free of Instrumentality if they want to/have the will to do so. But really, Shinji was at the heart of it all. He is the new god. He is the product of Adam and Lilith. He is the true form of Lilim. And his first act as god is to choke a dead/comatose girl.
This ending said screw a ending with a epic fight and screw the plot where there are angels about to take over the world. Lets just delve into the mind of this whiny bitch and end the series without solving squat. Good thing there are the remakes >< where shinji actually becomes a man and the ending is not completely retarded and understandable
Actually, they're congratulating YOU, the viewer, for surviving the past 56-60 minutes of existentialist angst. As your prize, you can go and watch End of Evangelion.
@hotelmario510 or they're telling shinji "congratulations! you managed to overcome your crippling depression without any outside help whatsoever, which is basically impossible in real life! all hail shinji, worker of fucking miracles!!! oh, and you sort of ended the world to get this little group therapy session, but that's not important. congratulations!!!!! :D"
Crypto 139: yeah, what they said, Shinji. ya screwed over your little mud ball and let the monkeys get turned into tang by blue haired jailbait. and you also totally lost it and are imagining everyone is cheering for ya. all n' all, good game, kid...

Folks, this ending is what would have happened if he had chosen Instrumentality- everyone being in a connected consciousness. The movie ending shows what would have happened if he had not.
@Audubann The movie and tv series endings happen at the same time. The tv series ending is just more instrumentality scenes during the movie. Shinji rejects instrumentality here as well and causes the movie ending.
@Audubann : No. You got the wrong idea. Shinji saying he chooses to live in this world, and that his life can have greater value means he rejects instrumentality. That was the message as a whole in NGE. To not run away from reality. Hence, everyone congratulating him on makking progress in finally being able to confront the real world. Listen, and read the dialog more carefully. It's so obvious that he rejects it.
@PSIground : It's not that depressing when you know that eventually more humans will come back from instrumentality much like how Asuka, and Shinji did.
"What the majority thinks is the truth?" Are you serious? The majority's been wrong before. You need a better grounding in history.
Also, the idea that someone can only be stupid and worthless is beyond cynical and just plain mean-spirited. People can change. People can improve themselves.
Life does not conform to name-calling on your part. Calling someone "stupid and worthless" is behavior I would expect from a teenager, not from an adult.
the part where everyone is at school is how he would like his life to be: family at home, friends, peace, ... But, he notices that that world isn't the real one. It's his imagination and what he desires. In the end, he figures out his reason to be and because of that is able to get out of his depression. He was in a depression since his dad left him until this episode. When he gets rid of the depression and finds happiness, everyone congratulate him and show love.
@EagleSeven Well there are other robot anime that dealt with such weighty issues before... not crouched in as much symbolism as Eva perhaps... but there's at least 3 or 4 out there that predate Eva and and tackled similar themes. Still Eva is great.

so is ep 25 and 26 parallel to the eoe cuz to me it seems that when he can accept himself in ep 26, in the movie he rematerializes OMG im so confused lol :)
@EagleSeven Yes, I know that it's not Gundam, but this is just weird. I'm fine with the End Of Eva ending though, I actually think it's kind of happy. Well, for everyone but Shinji.
This takes place during end of evangellion, I think it happens right before Rei and Shinji are on the boat, I don't know. Defnintly takes place before shinji wakes up on the shore with Asuka.
